Walter Rohrl in my opinion is one of the best drivers Rally motorsports ever knew, would liike to see him crash just for once. No one drove the extremely powerful and difficult to drive the Quattro S1 with professional aggressiveness like he did.

The Saab was clearly trying to get out of the way. He didn't intentionally crash into the rally car, but rather just got unlucky because the rally car decided to go around him while he was trying to let him pass.

@douglasrmarion yes it's pretty common, the roads are made of gravel, mudd, sand, or bad macadam, but generaly they loose traction when they brake too hard, the wheels are blocked and the car glides rather than being " pulled" by the wheels... :) the later you brake the more time you save, so it's pretty common for drivers to brake on the edge and sometimes they just pass the point of rupture

and if you see you aren't gonna make it, because you're too fast/the track provides less friction than you anticipated (which can happen anytime if not on dry tarmac)

you'd rather crash into something head on, breaking as much as you can rather than try to take the corner and crash into a tree sideways or sth, which is a lot more likely to injure or even kill you
