I've seen video of German pilots slipping into a pipeline right-of-way (where they cut the trees to dig the pipeline, just barely wider than rotor) for fifty yards or so between trees, pop up and fire off some missiles, drop back down, and then BACK OUT of the lane, all movement in and out below the tree-top level. That was insane.
Um nice Vid TY for Posting. But i have to Admit it isnt that impressive. Uncomon maybe But Ive seen Pilots land in much smaller areas with hazzards. Again thou TY for posting it.
that WAS fucking amazing, the size of bollox it takes to even attempt that, let alone the trust you have in support crew to make sure there are no telephone wires or other cables and wires found criss crossing the typical uk highstreet.
you guys should see some of the pilots in northern canada, you can jump 10 feet from a small 500 onto the side of a mountain and he wont move an inch! Thats how you get into places no one goes.
Could just imagine the conversation between pilot and air traffic control..... eeerrrr oubout to takeoffff frim the weeee cite are orr you know what i mean. go have a bath ya filty pommy gits
AD - not a fake at all, the rotors look slow because the digital impulses of a camera sychronise with propellors and blades etc. Look at any home camera shots of propellor a/c or helos and you'll often the same effect.
@ADTheAwesome you probably though the titanic sinking was fake too. its caused by the frame rate of the camera and the rpm of the blades that give the illusion of the blades turning slowly
@ADTheAwesome You are an idiot, This happens when the frame rate of the video camera is an offset match to the speed of the rotors, looking like they move slowly. If the frame rate matched the speed of the rotors exactly.....it would look like theyre not moving AT ALL.
This chopper has thrust vectoring instead of a tail rotor, which may well help with landings and take offs like this. I know with a tail rotor I have to give it a good bit of peddle to counter the kick to the side.
@AntC1981 ... you have no concept of what notar is. Look into it. and as a helo pilot its not skillfull at all lol. Anytime you land a helicopter you are putting it within 2 or 3 inches of where you want when you want it if not closer.
I've seen these guys (lifeflight chopper pilots) put a chopper down between a telephone pole and a billboard with about 15 feet of clearance on each side, in a 15 MPH crosswind. If you don't think these guys are frickin artists with balls of titanium, then get in a chopper and take it up. I'd give you about 15 seconds before you turned it upside down.
And MrOmniscient11 +1 and yes for the point thirdly we can see the helicopter "lean" at the opposite side of the closest building during climb, its not extremely hard, its a little like wing compensation, but its not easy and far to be easy...
I think a lot of how much skill that seemed to possess had to do with the power of the relatively light helicopter. I'm not knocking his skills. But you can make any job easy with the right tools. By the trees not moving apart from the blade wash and the stagnant clouds, it wasn't at all windy. This straight lift off doesn't seem so "amazing", maybe if all you've ever flown were listing jalopy's, maybe then you'd think this was "amazing".
An interesting reply there.Do I take it you have never flown a helicopter?
You seemed to have missed out on all of the things that would make this difficult, and wind really isn't one of them! The lamp post, close buildings (one one side only!!!), side slip and recirculation or FOD yes, but not wind
You're saying high wind doesn't impose a control challenge on a helicopter? Idiot. That lacking high wind makes it easier to control a helicopter, obviously, is not so obvious to you. What would have REALLY made this difficult, is if the helicopter being flown wasn't a sh1t tight airship. Obviously the helicopter in this video is a precision machine. It's the difference between flying an apache or a cobra. Anybody who thinks that's hard, may have flown a cobra, never an Apache.
Hmm, just re read my comment and no I didn't say high wind doesn't impose a control challenge. If you bother to read read my post you will see that.....Maybe you could then reflect on your 'idiot' comment lol
I said it was not a deciding factor in this video (and not being blind I could see the wind state as I suspect you can too !!!!
I noticed you never challenged my mentioning the buildings (on one side only) and the issue that imposes
I also have to add that you are posting as an expert (by rubbishing others comments), so tell me, how much less of a prescision machine do you think a whisky cobra is compared to a D model Apache.....I'm interested to know...............Not that either are remotely in the same league as this chopper in this vid lol
I've flown niether, with my experience being only only European helicopters and licence built sea kings.
Cobra has 2 blades. This is a law of fluid dynamics: 2X the blade area gives 4X the power. So the Super Cobra is easily outpowered by the Apache, unless the Apache was equipped with 1/4th power engine, which it is not. Apache's actually 600 shp more powerful than the cobra. PLUS it has twice the blade area.
Do you think you can stick with actually reinforcing your original claims?
You mentioned 'precision' (thus control ability and stability), not lift power. If precision was down to the number of blades then a Hiller trainer would be as precise as a cobra!
The Sea King has 5 bigger blades than the Cobra, but it's under powered (400 shp beneath the Cobra) and heavier (about 5000 pounds) AND it's a massive sail to catch the crosswind, all of which add up to a not very nimble flying machine, which is why I'd guess you're impressed with this take off, even being a heli pilot. I'm sure the Apache is more powerful than the chopper in this video.
I looked up that clip, and have to say that I'm far too tubby to fit in that hahahahaha
Flying that impresses me is: any flying where there are baddies shooting at you (did you read about the RAF pilot who took a round to his helmet while in a Chinook some time back, and still kept control of a damaged aircraft?)
Helicopters are fragile things, and no matter what side the flyers are on, they get my biggest respect. That linked vid was impressive :)
That there was NOT high wind, didn't make this take off much easier? Really though it's a deciding factor in ALL helicopter take offs. High wind makes a great control challenge. No wind, makes heli control much easier. I don't deny the challenge of the recirc off the wall, but really, there's like 50 feet from the blade tip to the wall. So fighting that rotor wash was no huge challenge. The poles would only have been a big problem if there was a high wind preventing straight up liftoff.
Hi again. You seem hung up on the wind aspect. Yet again I never said it made it easier or harder! BUT as me and you can SEE the wind was negligible in this case I don't know why you keep mentioning it. If the wind was doing forty knots towards the buildings then we would be focused on it, but its not is it. On the other hand, I make the building fronts only 20 feet from the rotor tip (and the post closer), as the car parked there is only 14 feet long.
I'm sure you also know that the issue with the pole being that close is that the close proximity of the building front would naturally pull the helicopter, and thus disk towards the lamp post. Yet again not a high wind issue, but a recirculation one :) Neither of us know the fuel load or internal loading of the helicopter either (think very big fat bloke on a stretcher lol), so we can't say the heli has high power for the take off either
It's a max performance takeoff. Outside of the psychological mindfuck of being that close to buildings, this maneuver is on the private pilot PTS. Not that difficult. Dangerous? Certainly, but pulling pitch and maintaining your drift? Private pilot stuff. Having said that, still ballsy and a cool vid. I'm still impressed. Try doing that in a less powerful ship, though and it's game over. This is just as much a demo of the ship's ability as it is the pilot's.
there is, and always will be, a lot of ignorance from youtube viewers. this is some pilot. 'Copters are notoriously unstable and to do this, from where he is, deserves a big cheer.

Don't see why this is so amazing? Hasn't anyone played GT4? Even a noob can land on the street.

@DeepThroatYogurt I have to agree with you. The physics in video games are as real as they come. I can fly like this in BF3 all day long and never crash.

I do this shit much faster while playing BF3. Easy part of flying a Helo is taking off vertically. Any gamer knows this!

An inward 2 1/2 dive is difficult until you do it 2300 times.

Not to mention that they would be hard pressed to find a more stable helicopter to do it in!

An decent pilot can do it with help from co-pilot or a crewman. 'Confined area landings' are a normal part of helo training.
More people walk away from helo crashes than fixed wing crashes.
Your points about lampposts and buildings are not correct. You WILL get into an incident and you 'may' die (not automagically dead).
Of course, to those like me that did real search and rescue in helos, this is all part of the job.
