Why doesn't Sharia law work in democracy? Here's a simple example: In Afghanistan (an Islamic Republic again) the constitution guarantees freedom of religion. Sharia law says that an unrepentant apostate muslim must be killed. There have been at least two high profile cases where only international intervention saved the life of two such men. Sharia law is only compatible w/democracy if 100% of the people are muslims and no one wants to change.
I have lived two "Islamic Republics," (Sudan and Afghanistan, also pre-revolution Iran and have visited extensively a dozen predominantly muslim countries. There are positive sides like friendliness, hospitality, safety in the streets (if you are muslim or not challenging the status quo.) But the oppression is horrific if you "leave" islam or even question traditional islam. You will always be a second class citizen if you are not muslim (not so in western democracies if you are not "Christian")

Shariah isn't about oppressing, and taking away people's rights, but rather protecting them, especially within a Islamic state. I suggest you do a little research on the issue yourself from Islamic scholars, many books have been translated into english from many Islamic scholars. Also check out Shiekh Belial phillips 'Contemporary issues' Whic discusses Shariah.

ahmadj345, Al hamdulillah! Muslim husbands have certain rights over their wives and the Muslim wives have certain rights over the husbands. But the unbelievers don't know that. They are too busy fault finding, instead of learning and understanding Islam correctly. I am married, and my Catholic wife and I get a long very well. As a Muslim husband, I treating her with the upmost respect, and also in the accordance of Islam on how a woman should be treated. Insha Allah, she will become a Muslim.

I agree with that, It is very unfortunate with all the knowledge people can attain from the books written by scholars that they opt however to listen to garbage written by so called non Muslim 'experts' in Islam.

Let's get it right, if we are going to quote Qur'an. Men are superior to women IN THE RESPECT THAT ALLAH HAS GIVEN ONE MORE THAN THE OTHER.. In other words Allah has made men superiour to women in some respects, but not overall... Let's use some common sense here. When it comes to doing heavy labor, there are only a hand full of women who can do it. but that's not to down women. There are beautiful things women can do that men can't. Besides If there were no women... People wouldn't exist.

Ahmadj345, Al hamdulillah! All these non Muslims spend precious time fault seeking our religion without a complete research of Islam. They read something that sounds odd to them, and right away they become defensive, and attack us without understanding. They speak from ignorant, and not realizing they make themselves look like fools. If they read the Qur'an with an opened mind without bias views, they will understand Islam a whole lot better. But its their intentions that must be questioned.

Everywhere in the world where Islam is in the majority it has brought backwardness, bigotry, oppression, destruction and tremendous suffering.
Islam teaches hate, it orders the killing or subjugation of non-Muslims, it denigrates women and it violates human rights.

I think the young lady was probably upset by some of the applications directed toward women under sharia law.
She probably does not remember the days before the 19th amendment which was founded only in 1920. Which gave women the right to vote in the US.

You seem like a very patient and considerate person. As you already know a lot of westerners would like to focus on the most negative examples of Islam. The Muslims I have listened to more peaceful then most of the Israelis I have listen to who seem to be full of hate and casting stones.
