  • Not half as cool...That has happened too many times ever since...Also before with mythical beings like Nagin, but i dont know if she is a goddess. There has always been a barrage of Goddesses on TV....nothings changed, even the CG is as tacky as it used to be! There was this crazy obsession with the actress who played Sita on TV...she ended up standing for elections!

  • ...thats too bad...i think it would hv been much more interesting if she were a goddess born from cinema...

  • You could say that she was the first Goddess to become famous through cinema. Not as interesting but still unique.

  • I wish the goddess could speed up my internet connection so i can see you entire video :(. Internet speed in India sucks, which is something Im sure you experienced. Can you possibly upload it in smaller bits?

Im curious to know if she was simply conjured up by the script writers or was there some basis to this random goddess invention?

  • I'm sorry, I can't upload it in smaller bits as I don't have the quicktime file on this computer. It shouldn't matter how long the file is for streaming anyway, just the bitrate which is actually quite low on this. I do know that the Goddess wasn't conjured up for the film as she had appeared in stories from at least the early 1960's and the film was based on one of these. I think the actress Bela Bose read it and showed it to her husband who then wrote the script for the film.

  • how does a goddess just 'come onto the scene'??(considering she was previously unheard of...).

  • This is a deep theological question that only an expert in Hindu deities could answer! It does happen though.

  • forgive my ignorance, but why is there no mention of Santoshi maa before the 1975 film in any hindu scriptures?

  • In the early 1960s, the Goddess Santoshi Ma, previously unheard of, came onto the scene. Although no one knew where she had come from and and there was no oral tradition surrounding her, she began to command attention. Several temples were built in her honor and in 1975, she manifested in the film, Jai Santoshi Ma. With the spectacular success of the film, Santoshi Ma became a major religious figure practically overnight. Today, she is thoroughly integrated into the pantheon of Hindu deities.

  • Why does White poeple think they can concour all aspects of race, creed and religion?

  • Incredible. Just when I was nearly convinced there was nothing unique or thought-provoking left on YT, I accidentally collided with this. Thanks so much for sharing it with us !

  • yes you are right unless he has the faith, the fast is just a formality :-)

  • Great video. Especially liked the parts about the fasting and the interviews. You guys were so lucky to get a free interview with Amitabh Bachchan.

    Jai Santoshi Mata!

P.S. How did you guys get into these temples? I am always hearing stories about westerners not being allowed into Indian temples.

  • Rakesh, our brilliant fixer in India, arranged for us to film in the temples. Of course, we had to make donations and in Johdpur were told we needed police protection, for a small fee. People were very freindly and welcoming though and seemed genuinely pleased to help promote the goddess.

  • That's great to hear. Sounds like you guys were truly blessed.

    Jai Santoshi Mata.

  • Did ur friend finish the 16 days fast??

  • very good job guys.hope santoshi mataa blesses u both wit her grace and luv.

  • its just the western men making fun of indian culture....they find the indian traditions stupid where they have their own fucking weird things,,,,fuckers being proud of nothing...only speking english doesnt establish that you are well cultured

  • I am the filmmaker and I took it all extremely seriously, but from a Western pespective. I was genuinely fearful of the goddess which is why I didn't even attempt the fast.

  • i didn't find anyone in this movie being disrespectful. i am a firm believer in Shakti, if there was anything i felt was out of order, i would have mentioned it. I think this movie is well made and the humour fits in very well and not once does anyone disrespect Maa during this movie. Infact these guys seem to be quite in awe of Maa, which is a good thing if anything. Jai Mata Di !!

  • its really nice , i m thankful , i believe in Santoshi mata n pray her , i m thankful to for this to believe in her

  • great movie! I enjoyed it! thanks!

  • Just finished watching it. Thanks you very again, i never thought i'd see this. I even contacted Channel 4 in 2005 but they said they would never air it again. Million Thanks. Maa Santoshi Ki Jai

  • I can't believe someone uploaded this... Thank you so much, i've ben looking for it for ages

  • WOW, his English is pretty good! I hardly hear any indian accents!
