1. The US did not sign the Ottawa Treaty, passed in 1997, which prohibits land mines. However it would cause terrible PR problems and would make foreign powers less likely to support the US in foreign policy

2. It would cost a lot of money to man "gun towers" and plant land mines in the middle of nowhere

3. Many illegals come through legal border crossings; it's impossible to check thoroughly all of the vehicles crossing as it would slow vital commerce too much

It would be hard for the US if it suddenly cut off trade from Mexico.

Like it or not, the US has more clout and less issues if it has backing from other countries. The US cannot act completely unilaterally. It is better if the US tries to get popular support from the rest of the world.

There are more drug related deaths in Mexico because the government stepped in with the army and they're fighting each other. The price of cocaine rose because it's getting harder in Mexico to smuggle drugs from South America to Mexico, because of the government clampdown, therefore it's more expensive.
