@LadyReginaSmiles Ironically! I was at a Chinese Buffet a couple of years ago and I was having such a good time until I felt something stick to the roof of my mouth and it was a long, black, Asian strand of hair in my plate. I gagged on it because it was so long and it was in the middle of my rice. Since then, I have been so apprehensive about eating Chinese Food.
I worked as a nursing assistant for six weeks in order to learn what went on inside an acute care hospital, a rehab hospital, a nursing home and a hospice. When you see the excision of a pilonidal cyst, the treatment of a anal fistula or a stage IV Decubitus ulcer, you'll never forget the experience. I have never had any of these conditions. My sympathy goes out to anyone who has had to endure them.
@BillKilgore1 i've had one. it's a DISGUSTING problem, but the surgery didn't bother me at all. the recovery was relatively quick as well. i felt really awkward telling anyone about it, and to this day, if someone didn't already know, i will never tell them.
i had surgery for pilonidal sinus on 23 august 2010, and now when i was about to heal properly another infection came, first doc thought that pilonidal sinus is starting again but after med test we found out that when i was in hospital i aquired some gram bacteria from the hospital when i was admitted and it is the source this time, this bacteria is resistant to most of the antibiotics now i am taking linezolid antibiotic and its much better only in 3 days. anyone want any information contact me
glad i didn't know about youtube at the time i had my sugary! don't watch it its not that bad, I mean they used antistatic so i slept then woke up and it was done. the aftermath is a different story the changing of the pads and stuff but the surgery itself is very simple.
I had this surgery. This is a painful embaressing condition and the recovery from the surgery is long and painful. It is much better after the surgery but it's not quite the same. I do have an attack every year or so but at least it drains itself now. hope I never need the procedure again but I would have it if necesaary. I wouldnt wish this on anyone
@bbywu actually not a foreign body, its a tract but you're probably right it has reformed, I wouldnt go thru the surg again for the amount of flair ups I have at this point...I have read recently there are 2 new procedures tho..one is a loop suture which leaves the tract permanently open so the abscess (the painful part) never forms or the other, the tract is filled with a glue material sealing it permanently. Much less recovery time...Anybody have either of these procs?
@decemberschild1217 Respectfully, I disagree. Drainage suggests persistence of a sinus...What keeps a sinus open? Foreign body (hair, debris, etc.), irradiation, persistent infection, epithetlialization, neoplasms, and distal obstruction (not possible with a blind sinus). The most common reason that a pilonidal tract persists is retained foreign body (ie retained hair or debris) or epithelialization of the tract. A seton or Cook fistula plug work for perirectal disease, not pilonidal disease
I had this condition a few years ago, I had it twice.
The two techniques to reseal the wound are a) stitch the skin together
b) Leave the wound open and allow it to heal and close naturally. This requires packing with foam, and then constantly changing the dressing, reducing over time how much foam is inserted into the wound.
The most successful technique is to allow the wound to close naturally.
I had mine stitched (for convenience) and the second time it was succesful

@HHRich tks for the offer of help but I think I need to clarify after re-reading the ital title of this I actually had a fistula not a pilonidal although it looks similar and same general idea...I do think a hair grew into the tract but I had this operation like 20 years ago i used to get a week long attack every 2-3weeks , now get 1 or 2 attacks a yr that last less than a week I think didnt heal properly but left a semi perm drain so I am ok now but someday may want to try 1 of those new procs
@decemberschild1217 i had it a month ago, and the pain wasn't as bad as i was expecting, but the itching of the wound during healing was soooo irritating... i wouldn't wish it on anyone either. god bless surgeons who help us with these problems
@thefullygirlalchemis nope, unfortunately, it's a part of the healing process; it has something to do with new skin growing and nerve cells in the area triggering something lol i'm not positive... i'm still in the recovery process, and the stiches are out, but the itching still gets pretty bad... calamine lotion/petroleum jelly can help
It took me 3 weeks to recover from the surgery. I lay on a sofa watching tv for 3 weeks and kept my legs together to avoid pulling the stitching apart.
@MinnesotaFlash basically i think the hair in that area starts growing inwards, bringing dirt and debris into it and it forms a cyst which is infected =\

I developed one a few days before my seventeenth birthday. More came to surface over the next month. I had to live with it for the next seven. It was probably one of the most personally embarrassing things that ever happened to me. Two years later, nearly to the day, it's back. Hoo boy.
The trick is to have a sense of humor about it. You can handle any asshole after you've had a hole in your ass.
I have such a thing and is almost cured. It was hurting me a lot. I couldn't stay on chair even on bed. Mine was small and I hope to not came back :((. I don't want to be cut ...
I love how they used the probe to punch through the adjacent sinus and come out one of the pits in the cleft. Anyway, I'm sure this surgery was an enormous relief for the patient. I've known people with pilonidal cysts, and they can be excruciating.

@decemberschild1217 If you still have drainage, the surgery was incomplete and you still have foreign body under the skin.
