Hey man, whatever you feel works for you. I do believe we need myth and cult to help us with the mysteries of life; a purely rational approach leads to despair. But shit, you were entertaining as hell.
Imagine that. All that talk; bluster, at points crescendoing into a veritable avalanche of pure, may I say, babble; and all about the minutiae of fantasy. What a waste of energy.
Religion keeps us from progression in technology. Only science gives us comfort, everything around you, your microwave, your washing machine, your car, your light, is a result of science. Give me a result of religion that gave us comfort like science did. The only result of religion is war and suffering. How many different forms of christianity are there? People can't even interpret the bible. Theres always trouble. Burn the book and start thinking for yourself.
Microwaves do not give me comfort. Nor does my washing machine. Microwaves heat up my leftovers and my washing machine washes my clothes. They do not bring me comfort nor are they designed to do so.
Yes, I got it. However, that leaves out something else. Comfort as in a spiritual, emotional, or even existential comfort. Or perhaps the comfort of knowing what is the meaning of one's life. None of these things can be provided by science. Nor are they given to us by wonderful marvels such as the washing machine and the microwave oven.
And, Science has given me all the meaning I need. It is politics and Religions that makes me wanna die young. Science, if not seen as a rebuttal of faith, but as an Art that reveals to you the way things work in all their majesty. My God is the Universe, and he requires no prayer. Just a look in what "it" has done for me, is enough.
Universe provides the Backround, Earth provides the place, Evolution provides the body brain and tools, YOU PROVIDE THE MEANING. Get it? Its an accident, and that means you are free to make the meaning>? Tough ha? Well, do not blame me. Blame the fact that your huge brain, has too much free time, since you stopped being a hunter gatherer. If you were hunting down Rhinos in Africa, you would not care for meaning.
But why do we provide the meaning? Why do we wish to provide the meaning? What is meaning anyway? If we are but a product of evolution, and we are nothing more than a bunch of biochemicals, then our quest for meaning is meaningless. Even hunter gatherer societies had primitive forms of religion. Why? And why do people seek meaning now? It is not merely a "huge brain." The difference between us and the ape is qualitative, not merely quantitative.
1First let me say this. This whole question is an attempt to Judge Now, what has happened In The Past. This means we all take "meaning" somewhat granted now,and on this basis we are biased. We slowly arrived here. It was a process of slowly needing less time to support ourselves, and having more time to observe the world. And the thought mechanisms we previously had to recognise danger or food, slowly were left free to just observe the world around us. With that came questions, fears and admiration.
2While we kept looking in the world with more free time to do so, we started replacing the simple patterns of food, danger, shelter, with more intricate meanings, and we also socialized more. That intensified our cognitive processes, and let to even more complex values being formed. Like ethics, love, art, joy, satisfaction. And those formed our brain, which is now well equiped for these processes. By now, our brain is a mechanism constantly looking for patterns around us, known or new.
3 So it is pointless to say why meaning? if we ignore the process that brought us here. Hunter Gatherers had their own limited understanding of things, but no writing or books. So they kept all knowledge about the world, and family, and seasons, and feelings together, as a united mass of myths and metaphors, that would explain and preserve these meanings for every new born human. And once you get to a point high enough you start wondering, why the hell do we exist? That is the base of religion.
Of course it is not pointless to say "Why meaning?" We should not ignore the process, no. In fact, it is good to go back and speculate as to what may have happened. Of course, that to which you refer is before you or I were born. You have no objective data to support your claim in terms of the slow development of thought processes. It sounds good and interesting, but it is also speculation. You have no objective data to support the idea that what you said definitively happened.
No objective data? Galaxy red shift, cosmos backround radiation, super nova's, all those are not explained by religion. Religion takes a valid question, and answers with a story for babies, and you prefer to believe that. Your choice, just do not get mad, when people point out that this is a story for babies. If you really want to worship something worship the Universe. For It produced it self out of pure energy, and turned into matter, so that your ass can live here and now to doubt it.
@graphattic , I did not say that galaxy red shift, cosmos "backround" (sp.) radiation, super "nova's" (sp.) were explained by religion. I did contest your contention that were were "brought about" by the "inumerable" and "suttle" processes. Perhaps you don't know much about evolution, but galaxy red shift, cosmic background radiation, and super novas have little to do with the evolution of homo sapiens on this planet. Now you have bad reasoning AND bad science. Enough. I am out of here.
who said those have anything to do with evolution? Thats cosmology. They have to with the whole way we ended up here. They contradict religion with proof. evolution is even more understood, and proven. Where is your twat god then? In your mind?
4) As even religion evolved, it gave birth to philosophy, science, and justice. And since those fields of thought were more specialized, managed to make far more progress on their field than religion. And then even those fields, were broken down into smaller, more specialized fields as well. And it is still our collective effort, to understand why? But then the question turns from why to how? And if the how explains what we are, there is no more need for the why. We are intelligible thinkers.
5) We are intelligible thinkers, brought about by the inumerable and suttle processes of this Universe, and it is in our nature to look for patterns. That does not mean patterns pre-existed. It only means we see them. A light switch to a bear is just a spot on the wall. But to us is a known pattern. But when we try to project our pattern making so far to the past when there was no pattern (big bang), we kid ourselves, for there was no organism thinking patterns back then.We now make the patterns.
We are intelligible (and intelligent). This is true. How we have been "brought about" by the "inumerable" (sp.) and "suttle" (sp.) processes of this Universe you have not sufficiently explained. There is clearly a difference between recognizing patterns and seeking meaning. Chimpanzees can recognize patterns. Some even make very primitive tools. For some reason, they never evolve beyond that. But we ask "why". Once again, this is a qualitative difference, not merely one of degree.
Well sorry, but you have been thinking this way for so long that you are unable to think in steps. Life took steps. If you see everything as seperate specific creatures, that are not linked in a chain, not only you miss the point of this Universe, but also you miss the best of the processes of life. And your chimpanzees theory is uneducated. Chimpanzees, Humans, erms, we all evolve, but under different enviroments, towards different directions.
6) In other words, we think in this way for the past 200.000 years. And before that, there was no need for explaining existence. Existense just arose out of a singularity, for well described reasons of physics. The singularity had no meaning. It just is. It is our tour through the world, that made us look for patterns. And we should focus that ability to the future, and not so much to the past, which was not made to satisfy our pattern fetish, but just happened.
No! two testicles and hundreds of weeners... You people have it all wrong - it's not spaghetti noodles it's hundreds of long skinny weeners. This is divine revelation from the almighty flying weener monster himself. recognize!
No, Jesus said God is spirit. Not "A SPIRIT". You are adding to what Jesus said.
I don't want any money for something so simple. Jesus says a spirit is a being that has no physical body (flesh and bones). Do you believe that what Jesus says about a spirit in Luke 24:39 is literally true?
Yes, I have a spirit and I have a body, but they are two separate things. My spirit is not my body and my body is not my spirit.
@camis2222 People are born with a dualistic mentality to believe that conscious is aftermathh of some form of spirit-like entity inside an individual. Though when you start to educate yourself in a number of sciences such as psychology. You realize that the brain is responsible for that consciousness and when you die you decompose along with your brain and that is all folks.

For the spiritual Comfort and life_meaning you will need the following:
1) A nice understanding girl, with nice curves, eager to have sex with you, twice a day
2) A huge Joint, filled with superskunk, and some early Pink Floyd and Can Albums.
3) A trip around the world, and some meeting with foreign people.
4) A trip to Greek Islands, and the relevant food-alcohol feasts.
5) A look into a squirrel's eyes. He is perfectly happy to gather NUTS, cause his brain is small enough. yours is bigger.
