Actually, as a current MI student, I would say *don't* try to look like a bad-ass musician.. those guys in LA are a dime-a-dozen. There are a lot of guys at MI who dress like rock stars but have no chops. be a "nerdy dude" if you want to, be yourself- dressing in cowboy boots and leather doesn't set you apart at all.
