I have been playing the trumpet for almost 20 years. This man is a scar on the face of musical talent. The best way to play your music is to FEEL it. Ignore what this man is saying. How can you take advice from someone who can't beautifully sustain a note for more than 5 seconds? His tone cracks, and I'm absolutely positive that he is, in fact, an amateur, learning himself, trying to impress a girl that has already not called him after a first date.
The pin striped shirt I was wearing while watching this video reflected in my computer screen and the stripes in the shirt made it look like the guy in the video was in jail!
Dear expertvillage, I am surprised that you are still making these videos. This one especially has angered me. This man has no idea what he is doing. I have had a professional teacher for three years, and never have i heard her say breathe through your nose. Please do me and everyone else that you have suckered into wathcing these videos a favor and STOP MAKING THIS SHIT!
@ihitman321 Actually, my Applied Brass Professor in College told me to start using my nose. I actually agree with you that it was not a good bit of advice, but the idea is so that you don't have to reset the embrasure. The thing that we all know is that you can tank air faster using the mouth for breathing, and what about people like me who constantly have allergy issues? The nose Isn't going to work.
you breathe through your mouth. and to get a good tone your lips shouldn't be able to buzz independently. they should only buzz when something is against them. also, you should sit up tallish but not all the way up unless you normally sit like that. your whole body should be relaxed. when watching video lessons be sure to validate everything with at least three sources. also if your this early in playing you shouldnt even worry about circular breathing
@trumpetsandocarinas Actually, yes, you should be able to have your lips buzz independent. This is taught generally in university level music programs. If the independent buzzing is done right for long enough, then your "chops" whill feel as though you were actually playing for the duration that you were buzzing.
you breathe through your mouth. and to get a good tone your lips shouldn't be able to buzz independently. they should only buzz when something is against them. also, you should sit up tallish but not all the way up unless you normally sit like that. your whole body should be relaxed. when watching video lessons be sure to validate everything with at least three sources.
breathing doesnt require forcing your shoulder girdle upwards.
respiration is an intrinsic/involuntary reflex that will adjust to the activity you are doing
what people need to realize, even this guy here, is that if you have the proper dimensions of your body open and free you'll be breathing as deep as you need to breathe. forcing breath will only create habitual holding patterns
You puff out your cheeks, force the air out while breathing in through your nose when you circular breathe. If he was circular breathing in this video, he would be puffing his cheeks out. All he's doing is giving bad advice, and misinforming you by telling you to mainly breathe through your nose. When truly, you're supposed to breathe through your mouth to get the most fluant, quickest, and largest amount of air possible. Breathing through your nose doesn't give you that.
... so this guy clearly isn't a trumpet player. did you hear that note? that's not a trumpet player playing. no support. classic "expert" village... Thumbs down.
playing the trumpet is all in the lips. Buzzing is the biggest thing you want to work on. when you first start i wont sound right ill tell you that maybe try playing a song that you know and that way u can just get a feel on what your doing.
@DOUBLEBFACTORY you got to buzz your lips like you put your lips together but push them alittle!!!! and then blpw and you should here a buzz sound. well ask a trupet player they know what there talkin about but not this one! oh and i play trupet but im not a very good exsplainer XD
@budcat8 Even though nebraska12 might not be able to »buzz«, he/she is probably still perfectly able to tell if the instructions presented in this video are worth following for someone trying to learn the instrument.
Thanks for that. It looked like you held your breath momentarily in the demo which compromised the sound quality slightly. The wonderful army folks from Washington (512th Regiment I think??) indicate to never hold your breath while playing; not even for an instant as it will restrict the outgoing air flow. Check out their Youtube instructionals. These have helped me - hope they help you too!!! :)
the irony is unbearable, :D im a pretty good drummer, but ive always wanted to play trumpet, and we've had an old one sitting in the closet for ages, my inspiration? frikin scott dean, curse him lol triple c is impossible >:P
when playing a piece of music you don'tbreathing in through your nose will NOT get you enough air to keep playing untill the next breath mark. You have to use your mouth to get the air
a diaphragm is not something you can fill with air, my friend....and yes, breathing thru the nose never works, as you clearly demonstarte in this video....but, on the other hand....I've been a professional touring, gigging, trumpet player for 20 years and have been thinking of a way to get more students, thx for the inspiration....you have over 25,000 views for some really un-insightful advice on breathing and tone production
OKAY! PPLZ PLEASE DONT COMMENT IF U H8 IT CUZ THATS REALLY MEAN
HE TOOK THE TIME, REHEARSED AND FINnaly did it JUST TO SEE MEAN RIDICULAS COMMENTS?? SERIOUSLY GET A LIFE AND U HAVE NO SOCIAL LIFEZZ! ITS MEAN< CRUEL AND STUPID TO SEEE U ACTING LIKE THAT!!
Say "oh" and then "em", I find it easier to make a sound when the lower lip dominates the mouthpiece. Buzzing is produced by the flapping of your lips so blowing into the mouthpiece will not create a sound.
um...dont listen to this guy. i have played the trumpet for 5 yrs and i was always told not to breath through my nose. Breathing through you nose doesn't give you the proper air support that you would need to play more then one note like this guy showed u. ALWAYS breath from your diaphragm. If your are watching this to learn to play a brass intrument or any instrument DO NOT LISTEN TO THIS GUY!!!!!
No you moron you don't breath through your nose. You are not filling up all the way at any point though your nose. Also breathing through your mouth gives your more air... There are those who can breath at the same time as playing, my friend can do it, but that is only for sustaining notes. Filling up your diaphragm its so much harder through your nose... So don't listen to this guy...
my teacher said there is a technique where you play and are able to breathe at the same time and it requires breathing out of your nose so he isn't completely wrong but still i would practice what i teach before trying to teach someone else
@piplup10203854 Yeah Circle Breathing. You tank up a little air in the cheeks w/ tension while you breathe in through the nose. I have never tried it... I have only heard it described. I can see using it for a sustained 6-8 (or longer) measure tied note, but otherwise, I see circle breathing as impractical. Anyone with actual circle breathing experience, please feel free to pick up or correct where I left off.
@NewHeathen78 Circular breathing is impractical. There's always somewhere you can sneak a quick breath, whether by shortening a sustained note or by omitting a note (always being careful of course not to interrupt the phrase). Really, the only reason you would ever need to circular breathe is if you're playing something with extended technique (like some kind of contemporary composition that would probably specifically call for it), or if you're Allen Vizzutti and do it just because you can.
@jcpenney1898 I hate to contradict you but MANY professionals circular breath, in practical situations, i.e. shows, orchestras. A lot more modern music written in shows and orchestras have HUGE demands on breathing, and it forces Circular to become practical.
WTF....are you teaching people to play this way! This a retards take on the trumpet. just stop before you slowly ruin performing groups every where via the de-evolution of the virtuoso trumpeter

You're remarkably out of tune on that concert F because you breathed in cold air. 100% wrong. Breath as if you're yawning.
