Apophis is covered in highly explosive material, so sending a nuke to destroy something explosive, isn't very smart. But I guess its (at the moment) our only option.

@azzaman96 if we attach a nuke to it in 2013 when it passes by and detonate it when its on the other side of the sun it cant be so dangerous for us. also these news broadcast is highly excessively since this one will create something like 500 megaton while the one 56 million years ago made a blast of 100 000 000 megaton (100 terraton) and this width of this aestroid is barely half a km. + we got ALOT of years on us to redirect this ting using rockets.

In 2013 NASA will measure Apophis's rotational direction. If it is found to have a retrograde rotaion, it will likely impact in 2029. If not, then it would have to pass through the "key-hole" in order to impact in 2036. Russian astronomers claim they have been able to calculate that it WILL indeed pass through that "key-hole", but like I said, if it's rotaion os retrograde, it will hit in 2029.

@mgtosman True. Ready for this? Apophis will pass by from Oct 19, 2012 to Mar 14, 2013 and could hit on Jan 8-9, 2013. Then it comes back Oct 9-14, 2020. Then Mar 6-10, 2021. Then the one they mention: Apr 15, 2029. I could go on but I won't. Apophis comes around every 6-8 years. It's very serious, but it's also fear-mongering because it hits or almost hits every 6-8 years. There are other asteroids out there just as dangerous.
