  • Sounds like a great idea, but I was not able to see what you did. Is there anyway someone can hold the camera up while you do it? It's hard to see the motion from this angle. Thanks!

  • @71Adkow Sorry!

  • Thank you!

    I

  • NLP, you saved my life. I took the retightening class, but soon learned that the little hook tool that they gave to us was VERY difficult for me to use. I would spend an hour doing ten locks because I could not operate the tool latch. You solution is perfect, cost efficient and time saving. Thank you!!!!

  • Thank you very much for sharing this knowledge!

  • We love you locs. Check out dreadcap.com you would love the satin night caps and the crinkle 22'inch caps. have a nice day.

  • You are the best!

Thank you for sharing your wonderful tutorials!

  • u so smart for that its so many simple tastics and yet ppl would have neva thought of this

  • Wow! Necessity is the mother of invention

  • Thank you NLP for sharing. I also made a lock tool from your tutorial, but I need to get my eye a little wider. I just paid $180 to get my locks retightened, because I waited so long to have my hair retightened due to financial issues. I sacrificed a bill to get it done, because back totally needed to be redone. I will be looking for a Locking Buddy in Texas to do retightening on each others hair to save time, or get my friend to do it. Again, thank you.

  • @Letwisdomspeak1 You are welcome. My friend waited 4 months before she let me retighten here hair. It took me two sessions to tighten 2 1/2" of growth. She has some areas that began to marry other locs! It was a nightmare! She is looking good again, but I advised her no more than two months LOL!

  • @NubianLockedPrincess Yeah, my hair is growing so fast now that I will have to do weekly retouches on sections of my hair until I find a loc buddy. I wanted to redo a patch in the front were the locs are extremely too small. They neither look like locs or braids. I will post pics once I find out how to. I tried once and nothing happened. Be Blessed!

  • @NubianLockedPrincess

I started my locs with the two strand twist method.

They are about the same size as yours.

Do I have to wait for them to lock before I start to latch hook them at the roots?

    Should I twist them first?

  • Diddo @ptlhealthyhair! I've lost my tool a million times in my couch trying to watch movies and do my hair. I'll have to try this.

  • Lol! You did that! Desperate times call for desperate measures. That was great! Hahaha! Sometimes we have to just make do!

  • @ptlhealthyhair Yep! You are absolutely right! LOL!

  • This video is pure genius! I loved this idea! After watching, I ordered a package of 12 plastic yarn needles from eBay for a couple dollars, and now I have a supply of the best homemade loc tools ever! Thanks for this idea, again, best homemade loc tool ever!!!

  • @chenoda Thank you Chenoda! This saves me money! I use the NL tool on my clients and I use my homemade tools on me!

  • Hi who wrote this song :) and thank you for the video! I am about to begin my hair locing journey.

  • i used sowing needles heated (carefully ) over the stove and widened with a butter knife. (i hold the needle with a pair of pliers and used the butterknife while the needle was hot to carefully open the hole. then i cooled it off in the sink (knife, pliers and needle!) and then used the pliers to crimp the top a little like the napplylocs tool. it makes a really beautiful little tool. Just dont burn yourself! (lawyerspeak release of responsibility, indemnity at your own risk etc etc..)

  • @screamingjoy Beautiful! Continue to share with us! DON`T BURN THE FINGERS!

  • that was smart...I liked this

  • Thanks for your wisdom and inspiration. I went to Hobby Lobby and got a children's needle, a needle point needle, and will try to make me a sisterlock tool with 16 gauge aluminum wire to see which will work best. Kudos.

  • @Letwisdomspeak1 Thank you very much! Let me know what happens!

  • Hey there Ms. Lady. Because of you I latched my entire head by latching...by watching your how to latch videos : ) anyways, I found that the blue plastic needles break so I bought the metal yarn needles I opened the hole it was kinda hard but I was able to open the eye and shorten the length. Like i said it was a little harder because the needle is metal, but it lasts a lot longer than the plastc ones.

  • @kizzielu1 WOW! That is great! I tried the metel needles. They would always break. So I tried the plastic ones. Michaels have better quality needles than walmart. walmart needles in time broke. after a year, I still have the same needles! I have to try the metal needles again. I will try to be gentle! LOL!

  • Michael's has everything we need.

  • @supervirtuouswoman Yes! The needles are better quality than walmart!

  • about what size are your locs? Or what size of Nappy loc tool did you use? I like the size of your locs. This was soo helpful:)

  • My locs are now medium and large. I use to use the small NLT. Thank you very much for viewing, jhausley!

  • Thank you for your videos. You have inspired me to get Locs! I have learned to embrace who I am. :) Thank you so much dear!

  • Ohh happy day! U just saved me 15.95!

  • Great!

  • Thank You! Latching seems hard in the beginning, but with time you will get the hang of it!

Braidlocs are a wonderful way to start locs. Their are many people who started out this way and have lovely locs!

  • Wow, thanks for this video. I just learned about latching last week. I went out and bought a metal needle like the one in your video. I saw this plastic one too. Next time I will know what to do to tighten my fiance's hair. By the way, I am going to do my daughters hair. What do you know about braidlocs?

  • Thank you jazioblaq! I `am happy I could help you!

  • oh u're the best. this is just what I needed!! love ure video explanation as well

  • Does everyone with locs need a nappy loc tool?

  • No! I lost my NL tool and have not replaced it. Everyone uses a tool that is comfortable for them! The NL tool and plastic yarn needle works well foe me. Some people use the latch hook and bobby pins! Thank you for viewing my video!

    Blessings!

  • Thanks for this tip - great idea! I'm going to make one and use on my hubby's new locs.

  • You are welcome! That is great!

  • I tried to use a metel needle, but I could not make the eye large enough to accommodate my larger locs and the eye of the needle would break. I like my plastic needle better.

Thank you for your comment! I `am happy I could help!

  • I used a metal needle and it came out vey nice. But you have to be careful because they break easy. But this I will also try in case I lose my metal one. Thank you!

  • Hello drmissydj, Thanks for viewing my vid. I really never sat down for one setting to re tighten my locs. I do a little at a time. I tighten every 4 weeks. I start on Friday and I `am done by Sunday.

I can probably complete my locs in three hours.

  • Very nice and creative. I would have never thought to do this! How long does it take you on average to retighten ur entire head?

  • Thank you! I re tighten a little at a time. I start on friday and I `am finished by Sunday. If I sit for one session. It takes me about 3hrs.

  • Hey girl, I never thought about using the plastic yarn needle, I told you your vids are tha bomb! I make my tool out of paper clip and duct tape, sometimes it gets hung up in your hair cause of the tape, but this would not happen with the plastic tool, NO Tape!!LOL, Thanks for sharin and please hit me up, I just did a new vid, check me out. LOL!!!

  • Hey, Girl! How are you doing! You look good! I will definitely check you out!

  • you are the best you must be a new yorker

  • Thank you! Yes I`am. Born and raised in the South Bronx!

  • i AM SO HAPPY THAT I FOUND YOUR VIDEO BLOG MY HAIR IS RELY FINE AND THIN AND THIS METHOD WOULD BE OF GREAT HELP .THNX

  • Thank you for viewing my video! I `am glad you are happy!

  • awesome video! i couldn't figure out how to make the hole larger. thanks!!

  • Thank you Lily! I usually nturn on the stove and heat up the round portion of the screwdriver or the awl for a few sec. Then I insert the screwdriver into the eye for a 60 sec. It does not melt the eye, but it sofens the eye a little. When it cools, the shape stays.

  • What a great idea!!. Thanks for sharing.

  • Thank you rmcandlelight

  • do u have an email address? i have a few questions i would like to ask u..please and thank you

  • Thank you very much! I `am happy that I could help you! I do not know how many times I misplaced the NL tool in the 18 mo that I have been locked. I could tell you, I believe it is loss for good :(

  • I just bought this tool and logged on and there you were. A true blessing sista! I lost my NL tool after only using it for 45 minutes. I refused to purchase it again so thank you!

  • ur dreadlocks look awesome! been awhile! god bless u ;)

  • Thank you very much! God Bless you too!

  • Thank you so much for this info. I have some yarn needles that I purchased a while ago with the intentions of using as a hair tool, but I couldn't figure out how to shorten the needle since my locs are short......This is good info...

  • You are very welcome.

  • Ever since you first told about the yarn needle, it's all I use. I have about 6 of them all over the house and 1 in my glove box of the car and 1 I keep in a empty prescription bottle in my purse. It works excellent, and if I lose one it's cheap to replace. Love your candle!

  • Kumina, you are so funny! I have to do what you do! You are right! It is cheaper to replace. I have to get another NL tool for my clients. You can sterilize metal. My plastic needle will probably melt. I purchased that candle at TJ Maxx.

  • Thank you V8 diva! Two months before I locked, I read where someone used a large needle to tighten their locs. While waiting for my NL tool, I got a Plastic yarn needle and cut it to size. It works very well. When I cannot get my NP tool thru the last rotation, that plastic yarn needle always came thru!

  • Wow sis thank you for that info! I never even heard of a yarn needle. I always use a coated paper clip. But I like your tool better. And your hair is looking great I might add!

  • Hey Sis! You like Down to the Bone too! I've been a fan since '98-'99. Good info as it's always good to have options.

  • Hi Msfullroller! Whats going on! Girl I like a little of everything! My dad, uncle, and grandpa love and live jazz. That was all I heard growing up!

  • Thank you! PrettiBoi Shai, your locs are looking very good! You have to do what you gotta do! I love my Nappyloc tool, but I cannot spend $15 every time I loose it! LOL!

  • your locs are growing nicely. ive made a loc tool before using a paper clip and duck tape.
