@ShUrkaSl you're kidding right? timbre is what makes the music or sound special- anything that adds to it but can't be pinned down by the concepts of pitch or loudness. and Shirley has one of the finest examples of one of the most beautiful (and rare) 'timbres' of all- contralto. and anyway the evidence is right here! it took me a while to get used to acapellas because there's no support from the music, but it just means you have to listen more carefully to appreciate just how well she sings.

In my opinion, her voice sounds unsteady. And it has always been like that.

I'm sorry, it's hard for me to explain what I mean in English. I love Shirley, but I'd say , she is not a perfect vocalist. She is more of an actress. She can make you feel the song , but sol-fa is not her strong point.

@ShUrkaSl First of all she's an artist, which means she produces a work we can call art. The vocals work. Of course she can't sing a Beyoncè's song, but who the hell cares about that?

@ShUrkaSl yes, i guess you're right in that respect. i do often notice her voice has a certain quaver that makes her pretty much who she is as a singer. she seems to be able to sing more note-perfect in some songs, and in others not so much. but it's what i love about her the most. i'm sorry if i sounded mean. but i admire her so much for that ability she has, to make you feel the song. it's just personal preference. to me, artistry in singing is far more important than pitch-perfection.

@ShUrkaSl and besides- who, really, is pitch-perfect all the time? probably no-one. and here's another thing. pitch perfect singing on a record, where you've done probably more than one take to get it 'perfect', is one thing. good live singing is another. Shirley's live singing is amazing quality, which shows how great a singer she really is. it's a real feat to be able to physically rock out on stage as hard as she does, then sing on top of that using the same breath!
