Apparently, the Chain were banned from the Roxy after this performance cos the bloke who presented it thought they should've been more smiley and that Jim should've made more effort miming. The long-haired git. This is a clip I've wanted to see for years. Well done fella for posting it.
Hi. This performance is taken from a programme called "The Roxy", ITV's equivalent to the BBC's Top Of The Pops. The version they are miming to is the LP version.
Sorry but this isn't a live version: the band are obviously just miming to the song -the single version of happy when it rains, mixed with slightly louder guitars. The guy miming the drums is Dave Evans who was actually playing rythm guitar during the Darklands North American tour. Yeah, hard to believe but when the Mary Chain toured to promote Darklands, they were using a drum machine.
Please don't take this message the wrong way: this is still great footage -gotta love Jim's shortish haircut
are you sure? if the single version is the one on the cd so it's distinctly not the same version, you can tell also by the order of some of the words.
Hi -well the prob's I don't believe this is live (Jim is just fiddling about -he was much more concentrated when he used to sing live- at 0:54, he forgets about the mike...) and I don't believe this is from december 4, 1987 either. Cos' if you look at the written message at the bottom of the screen (0:20 to 0:40), they're actually announcing the Darklands UK 'n' Ireland tour from September 1987!
So my guess is this footage is from Top of the Pops (or another UK chart show from late Aug.87) and the Mary Chain are promoting Happy When It Rains. At the time, it was common for rock bands to appear on that show miming to a different mix of the song to make it "sound" live. Also, it's John Moore miming the drums, not Dave Evans, and Moore was sacked at the end of the Darklands UK tour. Again, please don't be mad, I'm not trying to lecture you!
That clip of yours is still very rare. The Mary Chain were quite popular in continental Europe round 1987-88, there was a lot of press, etc, I used to be a diehard fan so that's why I know a lot about that era. Er... Also because I'm such a sad old bastard. But around the world, there are a lot of sad old bastards into the Mary Chainhanging roung Youtube and we're quite a nostalgic bunch, so you'll get a lot of views in the end!
hurts the end :/
