You know a video is good when you can watch it Japanese and understand everything in English. What a great swimmer and how about those flexible ankles. WOW!!!!
Very good swimming technique. I always thought whenever you stretch your hand, either left or right, you must make 1 strong and powerful kick to pull you further away from the water. So, you create a efficient drift with every stretch of the hand.
yeah very true but i guess its cos he can pull more water which ultimately is what makes you move faster. but then again thats what swimming is about but her technique is lovely it's so clean
Apparently you have to pop your belly out in order to do this swimming movement well. I really have difficulty 'popping' my belly out. And my swimming instructor says you have to make the splashes, but I've viewed several good swimming vids, most swimmers don't actually make the splashes. Besides, I find making splashes REALLY energy-consuming. I can move equally fast, if not faster, without making any splashes. Why should I want to make splashes? Any expert could help me out?
you don't. There is no biomechanical advantage to making splashes, so don't focus on this. Concentrate on "pinky in first". Perhaps your instructor is seeing something and asking you to splash to overcorrect a very slow entry? I don't know without seeing your stroke.
@timothyoborn we just got a swim lesson from an Olympic coach who said what you just said is old technique and that they're now finding that it's faster to hit with the back of your hand as she's doing and then turn your hand in the water. I would have thought you were correct before that. My kids have been dropping seconds and not tenths of seconds from their times.
I do not think that you have to make splashes. While we were learning, our instructor said to some to pop belly out (or up) and to some to make splashes so as to get them to become aligned. If you see this video, you can see that while the girl is nicely aligned, the guy should try to kind of `pop his belly out` or at least keep it up, so he could be nice and aligned. Maybe just try to be nice and aligned, and get feedback from the instructor :-)
Her swim doesn't have an effortless look as some great swimmers do. Especially when she rolls her shoulders and upper body, it looks not very natural and seems quite exhausting. But this video does teach something, so thanks.
Watching world competitions we see all the swimmers have their heads slightly raised. But this swimmer doesn't raise her head at all. She's completely "flat" on the water.
"YOKOHAMA — Triple Olympic champion Ian Thorpe swam the fourth-fastest 200-meter freestyle ever to win his third gold medal of the Pan Pacific swimming championships on Monday.
"Meanwhile, Japanese national record holder Tomoko Hagiwara grabbed a second gold medal for the hosts when she came home first in the 200-meter individual medley at Yokohama International Pool."
Great for studying strokes AND nihongo at the same time. (Many of the words are katakana-ized English, but there are some terms that are new to me like 「けのび」 for the streamlined position.) I tried to apply some of the movements today. Hmm...the videos don't show water entering the nose.
hello, how do to prevent water from entering the nose? that was my problem,,, anybody can help?

Her swimming looks natural and elegant to me. I'm not sure which great swimmer you are talking about; Ryan Lochte also rolls.

your hip should exit the water the same time as your hand and shoulder, she doesnt really do that all that well

That may be so, but consider this news from 2002:
"YOKOHAMA — Triple Olympic champion Ian Thorpe swam the fourth-fastest 200-meter freestyle ever to win his third gold medal of the Pan Pacific swimming championships on Monday.
"Meanwhile, Japanese national record holder Tomoko Hagiwara grabbed a second gold medal for the hosts when she came home first in the 200-meter individual medley at Yokohama International Pool."
