I recommend that you use proper drum head phones like the ones vic firth makes because those (compared to the beats) gives you a much better of the tempo and general feel of the song even while playing drums rather than the sound in the headphones being drowned out. That may help you.

I don't think the timing was even off. It just seems like his bass drum was mic'd poorly, and you're only hearing bits and pieces of what he's playing with his feet. Or maybe his left foot isn't as loud as his right. Something along those lines.
