  • In real life, Bill Holden fell in love with Hong Kong when he first visited the city during a Korean War USO tour. He owned an apartment there and visited the city many times. In a 1970`s interview when asked what were some of his favorite cites, he replied "Hong Kong, in the years following WW2. Lorraine

  • Hats off, folks . . . Han Su-yin is coming up 94 !

I've been familiar with the beautiful theme song for decades - almost ever since I first learnt to listen to music. But it was not until about a year ago when I realised that the film was actually produced in my hometown Hong Kong !

It's not quite the romance that brings tears. It's the scenes of the bygone yesteryear that stirs up such profound nostalgia. I sorely miss Hong Kong - British Crown Colony (!!)

  • life was so much more better and beautiful during those times.

  • William Holden was so handsome. I love to see the streets of Hong Kong in 1949. It was long time ago, wow.

  • 第一次感觉到老外穿旗袍漂亮。

  • The fascinating power of this intensely beautiful film is it so completely captures the spirit of a wonderful time and place to have lived. Despite some changes it has the enchanted essence of Han Suyin's brilliant and famous romantic true story. The poetic scenes sigh with some of the most divine sounds ever. Both she and the amazingly skillful actress, Jennifer Jones, likely abhor this age. The active romantics then created the world in which they lived ... more than anyone else.

  • my favourite film of all time, the gorgeous bill holden and oh that voice jennifer jones was so beautiful i still cry watching this gem .

  • This film is movie making at its best. Just love the old films - especially with William Holden in them. Wasn't he just the handsomest of men? Good looking, fit (!!) and a voice to die for. They don't make films like these anymore - too much sex, bad language and violence.

  • @lynikins1

    Deducing from this comment, your knowledge/interest in William Holden is considerable;

"Ouroboros171' channel has compilation/PLAYLISTS ( "almost complete?" library of

all that's Bill Holden, available on YouTube -- were you interested.

    Take care,

  • The "hospital" in the opening shot with the ambulance was filmed at a Chinese millionaire's house at 41 Conduit Road. Demolished in the early 1970's to make way for high rise apartment complex called Realty Gardens (I lived there for 7 years). The little green pagoda on the hillside is still standing beside the swimming pool at Realty Gardens, 41 Conduit Road, Hong Kong.

  • @fyvieo

many thanks for the info ... no wonder why the road looks familiar when i visit Conduit Road

  • Alas when Hong Kong was still British!

  • Ahhhhh.......beautiful Hong Kong.

  • This is one of my favorites and I did see this movie when it was released in Hong Kong with my mom. We have left Hong Kong for US in the early 60's. My mom passed away 4 years ago. This movie brings me back so much memories and I thank whoever uploaded this. Thanks.

Since I left Hong Kong, I once lived in Wan Chai now all changed and I missed my old neighborhood so much, I wonder anyone read this can suggest how I can find these people. Thanks.

  • I love the way that Hong Kong looked in the 50's. It's so beautiful in terms of its architecture.

Was your neighbours around your age? You may find them by using facebook....

  • The story was written by Han Suyin, born Rosalie Elisabeth Kuanghu Chow. Her father is a Chinese engineer and her mother is a Belgian. According to Wikipedia, she now resides in Switzerland and is 90 year old. Admirable...

  • I have watched this so many times it is a bitter sweet romance but filled with heart wrenching scenes; and the music! There aretoo many scenes to adore andjust pick one as my favorite but I do love it when Jennifer Jones clutches the letter and says "he has stopped biting his nails" Love it

  • What a great opening title sequence flying over Hong Kong in 1949 - I first lived there 28 years later and loved it then, it looks even better in this

  • This is my absolutely my favorite. I remembered seeing this movie some 20 years ago. God,that's a MAN. William Holden is sooo handsome and such a gentleman. I've watched this movies so many times. He's still the greatest. I love the scene when Bill Holden and Jennifer Jones on that little boat which took them to the floating restaurant.....gorgeous!

  • one of the best 3 or 4 soundtracks ever

  • 經典 ~!

    Classic Of all time ,

    especially the Violin background played

  • I was discharged from army in 56 in Yokohama, journeyed to Hong Kong just about the time of the movie, in fact one day I sat behind Wm Holden on the ferry going across the bay in HK, this movie and music brings back wonderful memories///

  • amazon

  • georgewu5, Hi,thanks for your reply, sorry you never saw me,probably because I got the year wrong.Apologies,it was 1956 not 54.I was having a 'senior moment' as they say.Too many years ago. Also I'm a 'limey, the ship I was on was the 'Centaur',a light fleet carrier, not as big as the 'New Jersey' but I loved Hong Kong and all of the East.Strange how music brings people together.Hope you finally found love, Regards Dave.

  • Hi HK2046, Thanks for bringing back some wonderful memories of a wonderful place.I was a young 20 year old sailor on an aircraft carrier in 1954 when we sailed into Hong Kong.Remember Happy Valley,Wanchai,China Fleet Club,Hennessey Road and the ferry to Kowloon and of course the lovely girls in their cheongsams, hope I got it right, great music great place, wish I could go back. Dave x

  • davidwatkins69: How come I did not see you up there in the Air craft Carrier NEW JERSEY in 1954? My classmates, my brother & I rented a boat out there to see the gigantic ship in Victoria harbor! I was 17 years old, several years before I went to the Cooper union to study to be an architect. dancewu(dot)net P.S. I like to thank you and your armed forces dropping the Atomic Bombs in Japan in 1945, therefore I am still alive to see your ship in 1954.

  • Those years were also my first time in my life falling in love in Hong Kong. Watching this movie many times already just made me sadder and sadder! Seeing all the places in 1950s in Hong Kong, just made me cry all over again!... A beautiful movie, I will never forget it; just as that I will never forget my first love! dancewu(dot)net

  • You know, I think that's where the CBS-TV soap got its name from(it ran from 1967-1973)

  • thanks for posting this great clip!

  • One of the best films of the FABULOUS 50's! Yes, Jennifer Jones is breathtaking.

  • I checked imdb and it came out in 1955 and was about the closing days of Chinese civil war (1949)

  • I once watched this movie on tv, it's beautiful! but,in the end, I cried a lot! There is not a happy ending.

  • you always want the same old 'happy ending' to be spoon-fed to you??? This is a great film...you know a tragedy, , ever heard of Romeo and Juliet?

  • You are Boooooooring...

  • yes, and so? troubles with your emotions?...

  • The STORY is set in 1949, smart ass.

  • hey smarta--.. it's set during the Korean War..... got it..?? Korean war hmmmm June 1950 to...1953

Moni.. i read Jennifer Jones dispised William Holden..

  • So, what's your point? Have you read the book? It's autobiographical and Han Suyin started working at the Hong Kong Queen Mary Hospital in 1949. This is when the story kicks off. She meets her love interest shortly after and then, in 1950, the Korean War breaks out. Before trying to best another smartass, check your line of argument ;-)

  • The film was released in 1955..NOT "1949". "CinemaScope", the wide-screen film process used in this picture, was not introduced until 1953.

  • I just bought the DVD, this movie is a MUST, it is extraordinary. Jennifer Jones is a great beauty and actress. As for William Holden, well - I rest my case. They don't make such good movies anymore.

  • Thanks for sharing this beatiful picture.
