Best version of this song! How can she do this SITTING DOWN?? I I went out with a girl called Lesley Garrett when i was 15...pity it was not this one! One does a good song, the other a good snog! Anyway..thanks to both of you.
What a beautiful voice ,absolutely stunning ,so clear so crisp,so fresh ,my god there are such gifted singers out there ,and Leslie is one of them ,you have made my day, thanks for posting !!
i love this song. my father was a lifelong G&S fan and introduced us very early to thier work, I have never quite understood what this song is about though. Could anyone enlighten me?
i hate to sound like an idiot, but are there any recordings of this song sung by a man, in baritone or bass? just curious about what it would sound like. please don't hate me for being poorly educated...
@TheDavidphilip I have an unpleasant memory of a Kenny Baker "stealing" this song from Yum-Yum in a 1936 film and what is worse, doing it with an American accent.
I have been lucky enough to play the part of Yum-Yum in the "Hot" Mikado - but I totally based my performance on Lesley Garretts, from her performance of Yum-Yum in the very english version with the ENO. She is amazing!!!
Grant Opera usually have tragic and romantic themes. Gilbert and Sullivan wrote satirical comic operettas. Satirical comic operettas work well in English, French and German and are a "new thing" starting with Offenbach.
Another glorious voice discovered here on YouTube!

Beautiful timbre and clean interpretation but there is a huge satirical payload which has all gone missing here.
Watch Shirley Henderson's version in Topsy Turvy.

This is one of the best singing. Beautiful and expressive voice. She really feels as she sings. Wonderful music.

Four cheers ma'am. You have the right balance between opera buffo and bel canto voice, with good dynamics for this lovely mini-aria.
