Thank God. I thought I was the only person who didn't like Rose Tyler. I felt that the writers were over thinking her relationship with the Doctor. She was nowhere near the Doctor's level and did not enjoy their relationship. It's a shame that RTD and the fellow writers kept referring to Rose in Series 3, ruining what could have been a brilliant friendship with Martha.
Loving these reviews by the way. Have subscribed and will be looking forward to the others.
You had to say "Worst female companion" because of Adric, didn't you? Ha, I hate him too, but the difference is Adric died, kind of honorably if you ask me. Oh how I wish Rose had died!
There has been quite alot of episodes after fathers day where really the reapers should appear the example the shakesphere code. the witches made love labours won get finished. it real history it was never finished really shouldnt the reapers appear?
Rose was my favourite companion. She isn't just put there to look hot like Amy! Besides the new series was sorta still being developed at this point and the 11th Doctor mainly has nothing but a better budget. Not doing a hate rant but I appreciate these episodes more because the characters are always developing, Rory is awesome but he's ALWAYS dead, Amy sucks all round if you're a girl and your not lesbian. Most of the flaws I think were from it just starting and I love the characters
After this episode, i disliked Rose. As a character, she just became irrational, annoying, and clingy. She really just became a nuisance every time she started up another irrational choice. It is almost as if she does not think about the consequences of her actions, instead she brushes them off. This is more of the writer's fault for creating such a character
when you were talking about some movies not earning their emotional attachment, you showed two robert pattinson movies. Do you not like him? Cause i can understand that.
bloody hell i can talk, just quickly, how do you include footage from the episodes in your videos so you can commentate? im starting my own who review soon and would be a nice touch :-)
sorry my comment had to stretch into two haha, but oddly enough I really didn't like Martha Jones for the same reasons I think you dislike Rose. I honestly didn't see much character development at all, and whenever she got into trouble all she did was scream for the Doctor and wait to be rescued (42, The Doctor's Daughter). The only time she actually did something herself was in order to get the Doctor back (Human Nature/Family of Blood, Last of the Time Lords).
I think its fair to say that Rose didn't change all that much during her travels but at the same time we have to remember that this was at a time when Doctor Who was being reintroduced to a whole new generation, plus the fact it's a family show, and people generally like a sense of continuity when these shows and their characters come about. Personally I liked Rose, and she was much more capable of handling herself in the TARDIS life than most.
You're a great reviewer, I'll definetly be watching your stuff again. This is one of my favourite episodes. Well done for highlighting the excellence of Ecclestone's Doctor. I'm sorry you hate Rose so much though. I'll have to watch some more of your reviews to find out why that is, I suppose. I see her as a really strong character. RTDs companions are all great examples of good female characters...and then we get a huge step backwards with Amy Pond. Blarg. Cheers Moffat. :|
@darkbatMori I mainly explain my dislike for Rose in my 'Rose' and 'The Unquiet Dead' review. Amy isn't the best companion, but she's definitely not the worst. She's got great potential but she didn't change or evolve throughout the series like Martha and Donna did. She's a 'nothing' character at the moment. I prefer Rory alot more.
@MrTARDISreviews The Martha and Donna storyline had to be condensed into one series but Amy has more time. I liked her storyline in series 5 with the cracks and all.I like her chemistry with Matt and Rory. I still can't forgive RTD for what he did to Donna. Here's Journey's End summed up in a sentence. YOU RUINED EVERYTHING
@darkbatMori I agree. *shakes fist at Moffat* Rose has always been my favourite companion but only because I can relate to her and I see her as someone who is real... She starts as a bored teenager whose just has had no opportunities and no inspiration but by the end of the fourth series she's reached her true potential. In fact all of RTD's characters are great in their own way. I love them all... Amy is such an annoying character with no real depth.
@TheTardisDreamer RTD is soooo good at writing the human side of Doctor Who, and that's why I love his serieses. I still watch Who now but it saddens me to think that if the first episode of it I ever saw was from Moffat's seasons, I probably wouldn't have wanted to see any more.
I also love all 3 of Moffat's companions. :) Amy is...well, as well as being eye candy, she's nothing more than a plot device to make stuff happen to the Doctor. :S
This was a great episode, but I never really saw it as Rose's best as a character, just one of the character's most well written. The character Rose makes a stupid mistake and honestly never seems to redeem herself, just see the mayhem and pain she caused. What I like most about this episode that I think was never followed up on was the foe, The Reapers could be the most deadly foe the doctor could ever face, and seem Massively important according to this story, but then just never appear again.
While I agree that this is Billie Piper's most remarkable performance as Rose, I have to note that Shaun Dingwall aka Pete Tyler outshines her in many ways.
Rose is just... being Rose the whole time, even if it's in a very human way. Pete, on the other hand, is fascinating to watch. He may seem just another failure of a man saddled with an annoying wife and kid, but he has a sharp mind and lots of charisma.
Also, I'm glad you talked about the soundtrack. It's often underrated.
Don’t know if it’s relevant , but did anyone notice that the baby started crying just as Rose verbally burst out over her parents arguing. Just thought that was slightly interesting.
@saphirebandit93 Actually, i did make a point about that in my original cut of the review (the 'directors cut' was just under 17 minutes but i had to cut 2 minutes out for youtube). But it was either talk about that or mention Murray Gold's music =/
@mrtardisreviews Great episode loved it when i first saw it! But wen u gonna start reviewing more older episodes do something like curse of fenric with sylvester McCoy that's an interesting story with loads of substance to its characters!
Always loved this episode - it's one of the few I could actually be bothered to watch when I got the box set :)
As for Rose hate, season one it doesn't matter cos she's hawtttt,... season 2 she looks meh, so thats when my hate begins (Yes, I know it's a vain reason, but come on...)
@angelicbeing2001 paul is a good writer in comics. he wrote great comics like m-13 and capt britain which is a gem of a read. Wisdom another gem of a comic. it is some of his great books. he also writen one great action comics run. he is a good writer at some things poor in others.
@DoctorWhoCenter2010 Here's a preview. My reaction involves a HUGE amount of studio audience laughter XD In all seriousness though, i'm aiming to have Series 1 done by the end of April (before Series 6 starts) then i can work on Series 2 =)
I did like this episode a lot. The only thing that always niggled at me whenever I watched it though was the whole Rose holding the baby thing. I mean, it wasn't like he only told her not to do that 5 minutes earlier or anything :D.
Excellent and amazing, didn't realize this was written by Paul Cornell, his NAs are amazing (please review them :D) great to see you getting some friends involved, lol at 'helpless victim' lol at rick rolled. Didn't quite realize the extent of the ecclestone subplot
I presumed that Mickey's friends did come back, because The Doctor, the vicar and Stuart's dad were all eaten by the reapers and they returned at the end.
Anyway, this was a great episode. I especially liked the scene where The Doctor explains to Rose how his family died but he knew he couldn't save them, and The Doctor's speech about the value of small human experiences is far superior to Ten's 'chops and gravy' speech from Planet of the Dead, which seemed forced and unnatural by comparison.
This episode was definitely her best, I never cared much for Rose, I also have issues with Donna at times, but thats neither here nor there. The end of this ep has at time brought a tear to the eye, if that was it's purpose, it succeeded wonderfully.
I love the reveiw and paul cornell has done alot of doctor who stories over the years even scream of the shalka I hope you do a reveiw of that one day :)

why were the reapers killing random people? if they've been sent from time to fix things then they should only kill pete and fix the time problem
and they've got mouths on their chests wtf? it looks cool but i would hate to imagine the victims perspective when they get attacked
