He co-wrote and directed Easy Rider and also gave a wonderful performance in it. That alone should make him a legend. Then come his performances in Apocalypse Now and especially Blue Velvet. Sadly, he's undeservingly underrated. Sean Penn thinks of him as an idol and even named a child of his Hopper.
