Even the TV from Hong Kong is using presentors or news casters that express themselves using a more North American dialect. It is just a fact. The things that are favorable for teachers are old age (lao shi) and for younger people, being blond is a real door opener. Many Chinese find the British accent to be hard to understand as whenever they watch movies, it is always from USA.

I work in high school online second language programs in North Western Canada, and there is simply no interest for Chinese. Our students are way too lazy, and perceive Chinese as being too much of a challenge. For years, I have been trying to start Chinese program = no interest. I have more students interested in Sign Language and German, but no Chinese.

It's not that they're too lazy, it's that they don't want to dedicate hours upon hours of their lives to memorizing thousands of characters AND the actual words of a language that they might never use. In North America, it would be much more practical to learn Spanish. Many businesses prefer people who speak Spanish, but I've never heard of a business looking for people who speak Chinese outside of places with a large Chinese population.

The phonem combinations in Chinese is challenging, bacically all the sounds of French English and Spanish combined. Yet the grammar is very simple.

A degree in English can actually do a lot. Every organization requires many employees to write reports, and yours will be flawless. You could be called on to rewrite your company's operating procedures, and your reading comprehension skills will help you learn faster than your competition.
Most jobs do NOT want the dime a dozen Business Admininstration degree for every new hire because they would all think alike.
My four jobs after college required a degree, and the major was unimportant.

@CaseyMcLaughalot My dad made 84k/y working for the government with no degree. He got a mechanical engineering degree and is now making ~150k/y with a private company. It pays to go to school if you major in something that's not complete BULLSHIT.

It's dispiriting to see so many cases like these ones. Most college grads I know don't have jobs related to their mayor, or can't find work mainly because the employers feel they have to pay them more.

The vocational school idea is good, but it only stratifies the level of education one receives outside of high school. This is ANOTHER scam that they don't tell you..that a liberal education is useless because it does not pay. That is absolute BS. The problem here is a moneymaking, money obesseed culture that is only going to get more ignorant. Is reading Homer a waste of time because it dont pay? Get smart people..get educated and stop believing you can only learn what makes you money. BS!!!!!

A lot of kids make mistakes, they make bad choices or got bad advice from whomever. They didn't think things through.

Somewhere along the line people began taking this very seriously. I quite like my major, otherwise I wouldn't have spent the time and money on the college degree for it. My friend and I were just fooling around at a horseshow. Also, we like showtunes.

A degree in English can actually do a lot. Every organization requires many employees to write reports, and yours will be flawless. You could be called on to rewrite your company's operating procedures, and your reading comprehension skills will help you learn faster than your competition.
Most jobs do NOT want the dime a dozen Business Admininstration degree for every new hire because they would all think alike.
My four jobs after college required a degree, and the major was unimportant.
