Many HK people are speculating with real estate and hence the rise of home price. If it costs him $18-$20/sq ft to build why would he sell it for less? After all his company needs to make profit to satisfy the stock holders and to survive! In the process of making himeself rich he is also helping other people (stock holders) getting rich!

slowsti: Notwithstanding what I said earlier, not even the most dedicated leftist would believe that welfare is perpetual.
Ideally it is a system designed to a assure the unemployed a dignified living while assisting them to seek work.
Ultimately, however, it must be relative to the culture & reality of the society & thus perhaps is best suited to aulturistic societies.
Then again, perhaps it could help make a cut-throat society (as you described) more altruistic?

I don't know why you say he opposes welfare but based on the amount of money he donated to the poor and building schools and hospitals I don't think it's true. And even if it were, honestly I believe social welfare is just a form of addictive drug to keep people from working/renovating themselves.

No he can't bring his money when he dies but he has been donating billions of dollars to build hospitals and universities, to healthcare research, scholarships etc. What have you done to contribute to the society other than laughing at a honorable man here?

He might be aggressive and predatory when he's acting as a businessman which there is nothing wrong with it. In business, you don't servive for decades if you're soft hearted. However, when I say he's a honorable man I'm talking about how de devotes so much of his time in his charitable activities and donating so much of his own money to help the others. Remember he doesn't have to do any of it and yet he chose to. People are just hateful and jealous of him because he is rich. Am I right?

slowsti: Well, perhaps some are jealous. But most don't like him because he's a big part of a mechanism that keeps property artificially above HK$20 per sq ft per month (out of reach of many of HK's poor), opposes welfare and colludes with the govt.
As for his charitable activities, one must balance the effect of his business on HK versus the his charitable dealings & whether that benefits him. To me, he's a tycoon, nothing more. I believe Jimmy Lai HK's only honourable tycoon.

I'm not living in HK so I don't know what the reasonable price per sq ft should be but in any free market the price is dictated by supply vs demand. Many HK people are speculating with real estate and hence the rise of home price. If it costs him $18-$20/sq ft to build why would he sell it for less? After all his company needs to make profit to satisfy the stock holders and to survive! In the process of making himeself rich he is also helping other people (stock holders) getting rich!

slowsti: I don't think you understand the mechanics of HK's property market.
Most of HKs land is government land, occasionally hectares of land are tendered to property developers who build skyscrapers and then sell the individual apartments.
1st, this is NOT free market economics, 2nd it keeps property prices artificially high. He is a big part of this mechanism
He & his shareholders wealth comes at the expense of literally millions who have no choice but to pay often unaffordable high rent

Money grubber... He made his wealth by buying real estate on the cheap when Yeung Kwong and the leftists were bombing our home in the 60s. Then after making a fortune off us, he moved most of his capital to Canada just before 97. He could use his voice to speak up on democracy in HK, instead he keeps quiet. What can I say? He likes his money...
