A beautiful slice of history complete with the really bizarre and terminally un-entertaining big head ventriloquist. I wonder if people thought this equally irritating back then?
SIMPLY GRAND! Frances Langford WOWED everybody! Was there ever a voice so pure, so golden as hers? A singers singer...And a very under rated actress. Her movies are all gems! No wonder she has TWO stars on the Hollywood walk of fame.
I happened to catch the end of this the other night after a movie and am happy to see it here.
I work in the entertainment industry out here in CA and there is no magic here like there was back when this film was made. Studios are now subsidiaries of bigger companies that know nothing about creativity or originality - it is all controlled by bean counters.
The quality of films and television shows has decreased in the last 30 years and the "magic" of the business is no more.
Sure agree with you. My girlfriend is head "Bean Counter" at one of those looney studios. I have "0" interest in looking in on productions today. She - herself has fascination with the long gone there are plenty of ghosts still around the lot. Now memorable, though I did not think much of it then, was my time with Lin Dunn, who started at Biograph as as a crank operator to leaving a great legacy and by the way in 1992 I was with him shooting Quantum Leap in 3D Video as a test - he at age 90. Z
I have a very dear friend (74 years young) who is an Art Director and grew up in the business. His father was also an Art Director and worked on such memorable projects as the original Flash Gordon serials with Buster Crabbe, numerous westerns, the "I Love Lucy" television series among them.
Each and every time we get together for lunch (on an all too infrequent basis), I get him to recount and talk about his experiences during this time. I never tire of it.
Technicolor was the first successful 3 color process in Motion Picture film. These films were the first to use the long perplexing solution to adding a 3rd color enabling full color Motion Picture film. The solution was to use a mirrored prism in the camera sending the image not only directly to two layered film strips but sideways to a 3rd strip of film. Many love the color process in spite of the dreamy effect created by some colors. Enjoy what you see, some pigments will never see use again.
I would overlook these quick, loosely scripted shortcomings and find the historic that were also captured with little scripting. If you really find it unsettling then look up Peter Lind Hayes (Mikes voice), a very passive type.

How much have changed in Palm Springs since this was taken.
Thanks for sharing this short.
The Technicolor is amazing, looks like it could have been taken yesterday.
The only thing left must be the Sunkist juices. That was sold in three corner tetra packs when I was a kid.
Frances Langford was one of the great singers, she needs to be remembered more.

He was the voice behind the mic (Mike) not the ventriloquist.

I just love Frances Langford!!! She has such a pure voice, I think she was the only woman to ever really match the Broadway singing talent...
