  • Nice adaptation. But it could use a little more expression, particularly at the beginning. Every single 8th note you play in the LH is the same, I personally would prefer some phrase shapes in there. Show some direction in the line. However, you handled the second section very well, taking time on the cadenzas and showing some musicality. Put that same musicality and feeling into the first section, and it'll be great!...just my opinion, however. Good luck!

  • you have very even laterals. i appreciate that so much haha. this is beautifully played, keep going :) i love your technique, its so relaxed and your not tense at all, its rare.

  • i wish i could achieve your level of technique and musicality. you're amazing! please upload more videos! =]

  • Its a shame that the mechanics of the marimba prevent this from being played quickly.

  • shit

  • What grip do you use and what mallets? I really like your videos. I'm learning the Bach cello suite No. 1. My dad showed me some music and really liked that piece and when I saw someone play it on marimba I really wanted to go for it. Unfortunately, my marimba is only a 4.3 octave so I have to octave jump, which makes the song lose a little something.

  • dude! .. that sounds as perfect as leigh howard stevens playing it great job!

  • Great !! Thank you for the video. It's awesome !

  • Shameless promotions here. Please check out my version of Bach's prelude on Electric guitar Trying to get a thousand views. Maybe we could do a duet? lol

Well played btw. actually used this vid to work out some of the notes.

  • My goodness!! You had to have gone to school for music. Where did you go, if I might ask?

  • He is the best. I have seen other videos of people playing this instrument but all those people play in duets using only one stick per hand. He uses two.

  • wheres the hair :P

  • bach is so perfect for marimba. (:

  • beautiful

  • Hey, cool!

Except for some Bach Chorales, I haven't heard any Baroque or Classical music on Marimba yet. But it's great!

  • you should see eric sammut play bach inventions. they're meant to be duets, but he plays them himself. it's amazing.

  • @pkim9 I've seen Eric Sammut play, and he is amazing!!!!! I didn't see him play the Bach inventions though. Btw, the Bach inventions were written for one person on a keyboard instrument like clavichord or harpsichord (or even piano). Bach wrote them mainly as an educational tool for his students. I'm sure he could play them himself. In fact, they were probably easy for him lol

  • arranged by stevens, am i right?

i'm at a tie between suite no. 1 in e minor, prelude and fugue in g minor, or this. still can't decide :/

  • learning it

  • It'd be great to see it after you finish...

  • Fantastic!

  • Great! No doubt about it!

  • wow beautiful

  • This is wonderful, and it is obvious after watching this and other recordings you have on here that your chops and technique are top-notch. I am only now building up my technique to be able to do some of this stuff and can really only hope to be this good eventually. Keep it up man.

  • Thanks for the comments! And good luck with your practicing. I hope you're in a situation that allows you to practice consistently; it's crucial!

  • For a pianist like me, this seems like wizardry.... 5 stars man keep up the good work.

  • excuse me whilst i pick up

    my jaw off the floor

  • did it take u like 2 hours on the first 5 measures?

  • I remember learning the 1st 5 measures by ear, from the Leigh Stevens recording, way back when I was a beginner. I figured it out pretty quick, but I couldn't really play it for several years lol.

I eventually got the music and learned it the way Bach wrote it, and I probably spent much more than 2 hours on those first 5 measures. I think I put at least a week into this piece!

  • Now play the Fugue.

    x) This is awesome, except for the scalar passages; they could've been faster, I'm sure (:

  • This is plain beautiful. I'd love to learn this!

  • This is great! I really like youre sound onf the marimba.

Is the score for clavichord, or is this a arrangement for marimba solo?

Keep up this excellent work of yours.

  • It's the original version, straight out of the well tempered clavier. Thanks for the comments!

  • Bravo

  • this is just great, a nice demostration of the universality of johan sabastian's music.... even can be played in a fucking marimba!!!! amazing, although it sounds like a fucking broken musical box in some parts.... but your virtuosity is out of any question, congratulations....

  • music box lol! Thanks for your comments!

  • Before I respond, I need to ask you a serious question: are you being sarcastic? Or are these honest criticisms?

  • I can't say I've listened to much Bach, but this might have convinced me to listen to more.

  • whoaa that was really good!

    nice job :)

    good sound.

  • Good sound. Thanks!

    Regards,

    Puder

  • dang dude nice job

  • sorry about that last comment. It wasn't me and I think that you are utterly AMAZING!!! I wish that I could play like you do :D Great, great job!

  • ha! No problem. I just figured you were some close-minded, incompetent person. But you're obviously pretty smart :)

    Thanks for the comment!

  • this is so annoying!! I think that you're very good but this song doesn't belong on whatever the heck it is that you're playing.

  • amazing...where can i find this music?? can anyone send it to me?

  • Amazing!:o

  • ALUCINANTE, FANTABULÁSTICO ! 5 estrelas

    saudações do brasil =)

  • no hair, not good!!! lolzor

    j/k

    that is fantastic...

    congratz, dude

  • DUDE!!! .... i hate you. amazing.

how long have you been playing marimba. i've been a drum set player most of my life and just got forced into marimba 3 yrs ago in college and i fell in love with it .. can't play anywhere near that though. sounds very similar to l.h.s' cd version of that piece

  • god effort, that is fantastic

  • well done! as someone who has played (a small amount) with four mallets and played the prelude on the piano, i appreciate and applaud.

  • Beautyful!!

  • DAMN! That's pretty sweet!

  • that is amazing. i certainly agree....4 mallets is hard!!!!

  • 5* :D really great but where is the afro :,(

  • wow! :)

  • Very nice. Your double (and triple) laterals look effortless. Check out my try at it.

  • Bravo!

  • Holy shit lol!

  • this is possibly the most beastly thing i've ever seen on youtube...ever

  • incredible.... my jaw was hanging wide open the entire time

    insane talent you have man...

  • Bravo! Incredible talent!

  • You're a talented young man and you've brightened my day.

  • I was suppose to play that in the 8th grade lol I wish my triple lateral could of been anything close to that.. you're awesome! keep up the marimaba work

  • i like marimba! it's always neat to see younger people playing "wacky" instruments.

  • Haha! That's amazing!

  • You are very good, man!

    =D

    keep up the good work/"!

    =D

  • Dude, continue practicing and studying music. You will be a great mallet player.

  • but rather... you currently are a fantastic mallet player

  • I bet that took some practise!

Nice job, listen to it during work

  • first i wanna say, this a preformance to my hart^^ nice dinamics and fluent and natural sounding rubati. the only comment i have is that i think the lower notes you play sometimes sound a bit cracking, try to hit them in a more subtle way to avoit the cracking sound.

  • amazing!!!!!!

  • is that a marimba one? lucky guy rite there

  • holy shit.

  • That was lovely.

  • I really like the marimba's tone quality, but I would like to see this reposted with better mallets or sound quality if you ever get around to it.

Very, very nice job. I really like your interpretation of this. How young are you, and how long have you been playing mallet percussion?

  • The most beautiful, dazzling and subtle account of Bach I have ever heard on the marimba.

  • Beautiful, Good Work.

    I like that.

  • Very nice, great musicianship- thanks for the vid to refer to when i learn it! Keep it up man!

  • Great playing; I just so happen to be familiar with that prelude on piano, but haven't yet tried it on marimba. I enjoyed listening a lot.

  • yeah do little fugue in gm

  • That sounded great. I posted that piece also, but on piano. I really like the tone you achieved and great technique. Do you do the fugue also?

  • Yeah I know it was three years ago, but if you do ever do it again, I think you DEFINITELY need different mallets.

    BUT STILL. Wonderful, indeed. :]

  • Who do you study with? They must be a great teacher or you're almost a prodigy.

  • WOW!! My Goodness, what SKILL!! I'm speechless... Absolutely Fantastic, bravo

  • not bad. watch out for phrasing on the left hand at the beginning. also, the second half of the piece has specific rhythm although we take it at a half-tempo and roll the chords. But not bad at all for your age

  • My band teacher just showed us thar people can play with four mallets and he was REALLY good... BUT, you are soooooo much better

  • you've heard leigh howard stevens recording of this right? if not, then seriously, listen to it. you've done a great job on this xD

  • What type of mallets are you using... I would try to experiment with some softer mallets in positions 1 & 2...Possible a graduated pair...wonderful playing though!

  • right on...

  • WOAH! I think you ARE a virtuoso! good job!

  • great job. well played. 'd love to see you do more

  • be-a-utiful!

  • someone just beasted.

  • Breathtaking! This is not an easy keyboard piece. I can't even imagine how much work goes into playing it on the Marimba. Thank you, and keep it up!

  • sweet

  • very good. special

  • I'm going to go to my bedroom and cry...

  • Very nice.

Have you read the Zeltsman book? She addresses sticking and uses this piece in particular as an example of some concepts. You might want to look at it, just to get a different perspective, if you haven't already.

    Bravo though

  • amazing

  • I agree with everyone. You are extremely talented for your level. You should go quite far in music.

  • You make it look so easy :) Lovely piece.

  • incredible!

  • Man, that was great. You have a wonderful future in music.

  • Wonderful!

  • wow that was great. well you showed me up. congrats! lol

  • great job!

  • Very nice. Well played. You're a truly talented fellow.
