@jaffabend It's probably a hardware related problem, and what if the target uses something like 1.8V at 100mA? The programmer would overload the regulator. I think it would be great if Microchip supplied some kind of adapter to connect bare wires to the USB power connectors or provide some DC-DC converter for one AA battery.
@MyTriplogik There is one in development. You can download the latest beta release from the Microchip Forums under "Programmers (MPLAB PM3, PICSTART Plus, PICkit 2, PICkit 3)"
Is it mandatory to plug a USB cable in order to use the programmer-to-go function in the pickit3? Can the pickit3 be energized directly from the ICSP port?
That would be handy, the board would energyze the pickit3. :-)
@migsantiago It can't be powered from the ICSP port, but you can use a USB power source instead (like the Duracell DR7000LI). That was you don't have to stay tethered to a computer.
I want to buy a pic programmer. Is the logic analyser tool is now supported by pickit3?

@kiranschannel The logic analyzer tool feature is something we plan on adding in the future.

nice...^__^

Nice idea - but wouldn't it be great if the device could draw it's power from the target rather than demanding an external power source?

@TheGhettoRepairman You can use a USB port or something like the Duracell power charger (DR7000LI).

Does the PicKit3 have a non Mplabs UI yet?

@azcraigrr Oww, that's bad, you will have to carry a small power supply (like the duracell you mentioned) in order to use the prog-to-go function.
Does the pickit2 prog-to-go function also require an external usb supply?
