Great info! I just got into using buzz baits and your tips have worked. Do you ever use spoons? I've heard that work really well in the spring just after the spawn and late and early fall when the water temp drops to about 65 to 68 degrees. I've had some luck with northerns with the spoons. Keep the tips coming and great fishing!
What would you recommend for fishing near a marsh during early mornings? What baits work well with dropshots? Never fished them before and am trying it this year
@bv9073 Lots of baits work very well in the early morning in and around vegitation. If it's calm Try top water like a popper. If it is windy try a spinner bait. If there is wood or rocks around use a bandit crank bait. If you see lots of fish movment try a buzz bait! For the drop shot I like the three inch senko and a cool minnow looking bait you can get at kmart.
@waxybarbecue Sound plays a big part when fishing buzz baits. I like to use metal blades and I mount them out side on my car and then drive 50 miles. I do this to try to get the blade to Squeak just right. Speed is also very important! I try to go as slow as I can and still stay on top of the water (I do this most of the time). Color is a big part of catching big bass too. I like dark colors durring low light. I even think a bubble also helps. I like my noise to be definet but not too loud.
I fish in wisconsin and tried hard to get on a night time pattern this summer for big largemouth. Never happened. I caught all of my 5-6lbrs this year in the middle of the day fishing thick cover.
I know those big fish have got to be roaming at night. It drives me nuts when i can hear smaller fish all over, but i can't get anything larger to bite. What do you do about an hour or two after sunset? The lake is very weedy with a few rocky points and not much deep structure.
@exbassguide I understood what you were saying in your video, i just had a question that i felt kinda applied to the video. I know i can catch them during the day, evening, and morning. I just wanted to expand my abilities and learn how to night fish.
Next time i go, maybe i'll try getting out at 3am rather than staying until 3am.
just got back from the river and i did was you said, i used a jig head with this..worm type look-alike. idk what its called but, it was colored white about 3inch, i threw it, let it sink, twitched it, and all i remember my line had a hard stop and the tip of my fishing pole went down and my drag screamed for a good half a second. and guess what? i lost it, what i think had happen was that, it just bit the tail of the worm because the lure wasnt sitting properly on the jig head.. >:(
i got a question for smallmouths, how would you recommend using a jig and pig at a river from the shore? and tips on how NOT to get it stuck on rocks and what to look for at a river to fish for smallmouth and what color jig/pig would work best, THANKS.
@43405555 for smallmouth bass I would downsize. I would go to a 1/4oz light casting jig. I would try to match the color of the crawfish in the river (brown is a good color for small mouth. I would look for a current seam with about 10 to 15 feet deep.
I would crawl the jig with a hop from time to time. A lighter jig will not get stuck in the rocks as much as a say 3/8oz jig. But you REALLY NEED TO TRY MY three inch senko!!!!! it is one of the best all time smally lure!!!!
what colors do you recommend? i fish a small pond, about 6 foot of water, with some good cover, that has a big fallen down tree down in the water? what colors would work best?
it's all about water color and ligh levels. I fish in low`light alot so dark colors would work for me if you fish in the day light use brighter colors . if the water is clear use more natural colors like browns or greens. Hope this helps! good luck! Roger
alright sweet, i was looking at the same one. i just went fishing and didnt get any bites what do you recommend for early spring fishing on the east coast?
Hey Roger I love your vids, anyway I fish at a small lake or a pond if you will and the whole thing is covered in weeds and all I pretty much use is a texas rigged senko or a tube and I was just wondering if you have any suggestions, thanks have a good one.
Hey I just bought a boo yah buzzbait today and I fish in kindof murky waters so I bought a goldish brown one. I also bought a strike king spinner with a big gold willow and a Colorado silver with a gold and red body. Which one would be better in the spring?
evening is just as good as early morning if not better in the summer! I have landed more big bass after sundown and before dark than first light. But that only holds true in the summer. in the spring I do not fish as much topwater and never after sundown. Spring time I fish topwater at the hottest part of the day. fall I fish top water early and late in the day. my #1 after sun down bait is a buzz bait. I like poppers early but they work well late in the day too.
I love all of your videos. you are a great teacher! I can see why you were a guide. Could you talk about fishing in lilly pads I keep spooking bass when I fish them. What can I do?
IF you are spooking the bass with your buzzbait try a smaller buzzbait. If you are spooking the bass because they see you dress in camo and stay back from the area you are casting to. Good luck!
I fish a lake with maybe 800 acres of pads areound the lake. I know how to fish pads! First thing I do is fish the edge of the pads at low light. On windy cloudy days fish a spinner bait on the edge of the pads. In the spring fish in abour 1 - 4 feet of water (look for holes in the pads). When I am running my trolling motor I take my foot off the power button as I am about to hit some pads and I glide thru the pads and start the motor on other side. Also use the Breeze to move through the pads.
that will help you stop spooking bass. Look for good cover near pads. the bass will move out at night on to the other cover and you can catch them that way too!
That can help also filing teeth on the leading edge of the blade can help too. But hanging the buzz bait out the car window for 50 miles will do better than all that. Great question!

Does the loudness of the bait matter?

@heartlesspinto What do I do 1 or two hours after sunset? I SLEEP!!!!! The best bite is just as it is starting to get dark. NOT AFTER ITS DARK.

@heartlesspinto It takes a basses eyes longer to adjust to darkness than in man's eyes! So try later at nite.

would this pattern work for spinnerbaits if you reel it fast so it stays fairly close to the surface?
hugelargemouths 2 years ago
NO! A buzz bait can be fished slow and stay on top and it caches more and much bigger bass in this situation.
Thank you for asking!
