I have fished this stretch of the madison, its directly below Hebgen, PRIME TIME big brown water! I heard he had to keep this fish because he wasn't able to revive the big guy! Bob is a great fisherman and fly tyer!
Yes, it is obvious he is a very experienced fly fisherman just by watching his casting, line mending, and how he handled the trout and got it out of the fast current to the shallows. Awesome trout.
I have caught browns in exactly the same part of the Madison where you caught that big one. The biggest brown that I have caught is 5-6 pounds. I caught a 5 pound rainbow immediately upstream of where Bob was and it literally jumped out the water and landed on shore (that was about 1960).
That's awesome. I've yet to catch my wall mounter. I got close once. But I chose to eat him instead! Maybe ice fishing season coming up will produce the fish that I can tell my children about one day!
holy hell great kaiser! i hate to call it luck, but for anyone who has caught 25+ inch stream trout they know it takes a certain amount, especially for the amount of drag that was taken (from what the film shows anyhow). can't take anything away from that toad!!!
My passion is fishing for trout salmon and walleye, let me start by saying that. All i can say after watching that greatly filmed video is WOW. beautifal fish and i dont blame ya one bit for taking that one home at all. great work bob really wish i could get one like that.
This must be the 6th time I've watched this video and it gets me excited everytime as if its the first time. I can only imagine the thrill of actually catching that big fish! I don't know if I can even speak if I landed a fish like that. This is simply outstanding.
Nice Fish! This vid gets me pumped for my trip in a few weeks. I fish this exact same stretch and have actually waded in that same spot, and have lost a few fish in that dang tree sticking into the water...
It's a weighted nymph fished 'dead-drift' (i.e. with the current) on or close to the bottom. The strike indicator you saw on his leader acts like a float and will stop or move to the side as a fish takes the fly.
Tremendous trout. Congrats! Wish we could've seen him displayed better, though (I think it could have been done without harming the fish). Personally would've liked to have seen this spectacular trophy released, but that's just me.
the maddison is one of my favorite places to fish, i caught a 24" brown on the upper parts if that river when i was 8 or something. some of the best fishing ive ever experienced. nice job!
Did I mention hes BIG??? Ha Ha, great video, you should be proud of that fish, he was a beast! I would love to be able to fish places like that, there arent a whole lot of them here on the east coast. Congrats!
Small nymph's fished on the bottom at a dead drift.. all there is to it. I have never taken a fish that big but I have seen them and vow to one day land one.
I've meet and talked with Mr. Jacklin, Never meet a nicer man. His slide shows and presentations are amazing. Feel honored to have meet and shock his hand. Nice fish Bob!
Amazing fish. Fish of a lifetime as the video says! I'm not one of those catch and release fanatics, but I sure would have liked to see that fish swim again, but I understand you wanting to keep him. None the less, good job!
Congratulations Jack! I heard an interview where you described this experience. It was fun to watch the video. You are a credit to the sport and a true gentleman.
wow thats awesome, im only 14 and just getting interested in fly fishing but i already like it better than spincasting and that is one amazing fish let me tell ya i can just imagine how tingly and nervous you were when you had him in close and thats a beautiful stream too
Good to hear young man! I grew up in Texas addicted to bass fishing and anything else in the state. I saw "A River Runs Through It" back in 93. I bought a fly rod the next day and told myself I was gonna move to Missoula Montana one day. I've been living in Missoula for two years now and it's great lol. Follow your dreams!
please post when you mount it i wanna see that

that must be above quake lake cause i fish the madison all the time and that stretch of water does not look familiar, what an unbelievable fish.
i'm a catch and release advocate but i have no problem with bob keeping that fish, he knows a fish that old is gonna die in a few months anyway
