  • phillip glass is just a piece of shit and is a terrible composer

  • Some sweet filters, 0:58-1:03 is really cool, was this on FCP?

  • Damn. That moment when there's a long plateau of sound, and then sudden appearance of a faster motif breakes the calm... "and now I'm freezing". It gives me this very weird sensation of a doom, not fully understood, yet absolutely certain. Chills every time. Love it.

  • Thank-you!!

A perfect share... accepted, favourited... stored : )

  • Could someone just make an instrumental version and be done with it.

  • love the Glass/ Ronstadt union for this song ,

  • I love this work

  • Beautiful video as well

  • Just wonderful. A perfect collaboration,

  • I like

  • Es hermoso este tema.. yann tiersen tiene el mismo estilo.

  • contemplando todo...

  • Did you (the uploader) sing ontop of this, who is singing? Is it not in the original?

  • @lostpianist It's Linda Ronstadt. I think it works, and I'm a huge Glass fan.

  • OMG! what on earth is this supposed to be?

  • WOW!!! The master of masters...

  • a milestone album, glass, vega, kronos, ronstadt, and others..pure art!

  • a milestone album, glass, vega, kronos, ronstadt, ..pure art!

  • ew...

  • i dint like the vocals the first time but they kinda grow on you or maybe just me

  • i like it with or without the vocals

  • Que hermosa música

  • this video makes me nauseous

  • @LoseUrselfInMusic I listen to this video because life makes me nauseous.

  • i love it.

  • beautiful video!

  • philip glass in Mexico aion.mx/noticias/philip-glass-llena-explanada-de-bellas-artes.html

  • I love the vocals!

  • magique!

  • weeey Brighton :D = Phillip glass = awsome!

  • nice job...!!!nive word...!!!

  • To appreciate the vocals, it helps to understand the context of the album in which this track can be found. It's collaborative work between Glass and some of the best songwriters of the day. Linda Ronstadt figures into the 'pop' song feel, and is an accomplished opera singer in her own right. The Roches (the backing vocals) are perfectly suited to Glass' other-worldly compositions. I guess you had to be there when this album came out. It was a perfect synthesis of music, lyrics, and personality.

  • ...I'm not sure, but I think Suzanne Vega wrote the lyrics. Another track, called Changing Opinion, features lyrics by Paul Simon....it's a really weird trip...

  • Jest piękne It's beautiful!

  • I love the video too. At times it looks like a dynamic Impressionist painting - especially at the beginning...

  • The vocals were a bit bizarre for me at first, but I'm actually enjoying them now.

  • That's an amazing video!

    Well done.

  • You have to look at this song as a poem set to music. The lyrics add so much.

  • Wow, beautiful music. Stuff like this makes life worth living.

  • I love the vocals!

  • If you had no name If you had no history If you have no books If you had no family If it were only you Naked on the grass Who would you be then? This is what he asked And I said I wasn't really sure But I would probably be Cold And now I'm freezing Freezing
  • I wonder if one day the computers we use today and the advent of "idiocracy " in our population will lend us vulnerable to AI.

  • This is my favorite album of PG. The combination of lyrics and vocals and music is the most unique thing I have ever heard. I loved this album from day one. Open your minds, folks. Don't be a purist for the sake of it.

  • So many comments about how better this would be without vocals but it was written for vocals. This is a song that has deep meaning from me, in many situations. For those who say Philip Glass with vocals is wrong then perhaps listen to the album, of Songs From Liquid Days by Philip Glass, or the version with and Crouch End Festival Chorus for all vocal (except an organ). And don't forget the opera's - all with vocals.

  • Wow, Philip Glass with vocals is so wrong

  • @crishox I used to think that, but it needs constant listening to

  • @crishox Well he doesn't think so. :)

  • good job

  • If you had no name If you had no history If you have no books If you had no family If it were only you Naked on the grass Who would you be then? This is what he asked And I said I wasn't really sure But I would probably be Cold And now I'm freezing Freezing
  • I love the song, and I love hearing purse voices, but the vocals are annoyingly sharp.. not the right tone. I don't know.

  • My brain gets a little dimmer at precisely the moment my fingers hit the keyboard.

  • I am not a musically educated person in any way, so correct me if i'm wrong but i've listened the majority of Glass's work and i spot a very distinctive theme on the most of them. To be honest i' m not sure even what does that say about the quality of his music, but i'm a big admirer of it.

  • @Michaisi There something that is common to a lot of Phillip Glass' music. That is a Minor key with two eighth notes going 1-2, 1-2, 1-2, 1-2 as a constant. I like his music. So much of it reminds me of Bach. Cello suit no.1 for instance.

  • @Michaisi 4 me its all about feelings, and i´m also a big Philip Glass fan

  • Thanks....its good to be able to hear this after so many years after the cassette tape.

  • Good ol' philip glass.

  • Should have had Jane Siberry sing it instead.

  • great album great music by Susan Vega and great vocals by Linda Ronstadt !! thanks.

  • Beautiful piece of work! nice going!

  • still my favorite song by him so far. Have a hard time thinking my own thoughts when hearing this...

  • @YoFaceMaCrotch - Prophecies and Pruit Igoe are better

  • If it were only you

    Naked on the grass

    Who would you be then?

    This is what he asked

    And I said I wasn't really sure

    But I would probably be

    Cold

    And now I'm freezing

    Freezing

  • Bikaina!!

  • Life is enigmatic

  • Philip Glass is Brilliant...

  • Ugh. This would've been great without the vocals.

  • @debacleus I like it just like it is,,, but yes, the instrumentals r HUGE

  • @debacleus I actually think the vocals are great! I'm sure Philip Glass thought so too. I know it's opinion though.

  • @debacleus the background vocals aren't too bad, but the lady singing can definitely go!

  • @ChildofGod318 The lady singing is Linda Ronstadt--a "child of God" should be able to hear and Angel singing...

  • @adcan45

im preety sure its suzanne vega

  • @yoninecambron Hey bud--i believe suzanne vega wrote the lyrics, but Linda is singing; enjoy!

  • @debacleus I think it's still great. The lyrics are too good to throw out the vocals.

  • @debacleus dont be so 2 demensional

  • @wimmzey He could be right. The vocals completely change the piece. It becomes about a narrative and about a tangible character. Without the vocals, the piece could be about nature and civilization, but that is just because of the nature of the visuals. Anyway, this pretty much sounds like a Muse song with the vocals. It is not a bad thing... just saying.

  • @wimmzey Don't be so 7 dimensional.

  • @debacleus what a dumb comment

  • @debacleus why not vocals? realy great.

  • @debacleus Same with the collaboration he did with Leonard Cohen. Both great Artist, but not together.

  • @debacleus No, it wouldn`t.

  • @debacleus

    I disagree

  • @debacleus

On the contrary, this song is nothing without her divine voice.

  • @ingelaaaaaa one compliments the other but Ive always loved Linda Ronstadt, but with Phillip, its perfect ,

  • @debacleus

    shhh and lissen

  • 2nd point- He is one of the bigger names in modern day symphonic music (excluding movie soundtracks).

Does it matter if he achieved this by using all the right structure in this song (and yes it is part of a "pop" song cycle he did), or if he uses it in his other works? At the end of the day he is listened to now, and will be remembered because he did something unique that spoke to people.

There are plenty of unknown composers out there who have followed all the rules.

  • Just skimming this discussion I have a couple things I'd like to add (humbly, I hope).

    1) Strictly speaking, classical music existed between about 1750 and 1820. Obviously many people refer to pretty much all symphonic music as classical. But I think the fact that most of it isn't classical technically probably means we shouldn't be quick to come up for restrictive definitions for what it is or isn't.

  • I agree with harrismonkey. I dont care obout structures and sorts. I just listen and feel. A lot of Glass's works made me feel good and this one to.

  • WEll, Glass finished Juilliard and subsequently studied with Darius Milhaud and Nadia Boulanger. So he must have picked up some knowledge...

  • @BuckshotLaFunke

    Unfortunely he hasn't.

  • laurion69, this may elecit a smile from Glass (I once talked with him rather briefly and he's the kindest person you can imagine).

  • @BuckshotLaFunke

I never thought he was an impolite person.

I think only he is a very limited composer.

  • Allright, laurion69, I'll accept your opinion, of course. I must confess that there are individual compositions by Ligeti, Reich or John Adams that I rate higher than Glass' works, but he remains fascinating to me. Best to you.

  • @laurion69 amEteurs???

  • Youtube : "Lontano " (Ottomano)

  • Philip Glass is the kind of composer that thinks out of the box hes sounds much different from Mozart or bach, but it's still classical

  • First, I hope it's different from Bach and Mozart (Mozart was already different than Bach) it's 250 years later.

    Second, it's not classical.

  • LOL- it would be ludicrous to say that Philip Glass's music is the same as Mozart's! It's contemporary music- not the most popular thing out there, but what is bound to be a revolutionary movement- I bet you Philip Glass and his contemporaries will see the fate of Bach- not "famous" for their compositions outside of their area, but surely everyone will know their names in what is to come. It ill be them that will have revolutionized music, like I already wrote.

  • well, glass considers himself neo-classical

  • I don't know P.G work but this particular music isn't classical...

  • loved this music for a long time---great video!

  • magnifique.

  • Vertigo!

  • Its quality stuff, dont listen to the twats

  • Comment removed

  • i do not see how philip glass is so great it seems pretty simple

  • It is called minimal music.

  • "minimalistic"

  • haha

  • Mozart's music is quite simple as well- you see, it is simple yet perfect- it's (there's no other word for it)- GENIUS.

  • Why is it so beautiful?....:'(

  • thank you for sending it... see you thursday?!

  • I don't think so...I have to work thursday :( lol...

  • Very nice video.

    I love glassical music.

    :)

  • MUY HERMOSO!!!

  • like the music and the background vocal but the woman singing at front is annoying

  • the alchemy of life is so very fragile

  • @harebellish so true, so true.

  • Beautiful. I literally pooped my pants after listening to this. I'm serious, I literally crapped myself. It's disgusting and I don't know what to do. This has ever happened to me before

  • put it back in your butt

  • lol

  • No offense meant, but my eyes hurt when I read the last two sentences. I mean, you aren't supposed WRITE that, dude!!! LOL.

Just write it's beautiful- the rest is... awkward. Awkward moments set aside, pretty amazing music here, huh?

  • very nice combination of voices and Glass' work!

  • this with gears of war would sound even better! haha still great song

  • this song would be great for a trailer remake, for example, you gamers out there, watch halo 3:ODST and then imange this song in the backround, good huh?! lol awesome

  • excellent 5 thousand stars for you!

  • I am so glad that the video was recommended for me by YT serve. I like it a lot. Thanks. 5*

  • me too! its so sweeet

  • Shakes the foundations of my soul...

  • try koyaanisqatsi , powaqatsi and more word of godfrey reggio

  • anyone know who the two female voices are? . . . just wondering , . . thought it sounded a lot like linda ronstadt???? . . .

  • You're right. Vocals and backing vocals by linda ronstadt and strings by kronos quartet

  • Linda Ronstadt's singing the verse.

The backing vocals are either Joan La Barbara, Iris Hiskey or Dora Ohrenstein.

  • rock on

  • Philip Glass and Brighton go well together!

  • Excellent work, my friend.

  • stupendo

  • i thoroughly enjoyed watching that.

  • Passion evident in every measure...every note!

  • i really enjoyed it....really really nice work dude...

  • Celestial,ethereal,unique...

  • Excellent video for a great music!

  • great stuff from philip glass n nice vid too!

  • Yuotube:Stefano Ottomano

  • Good video! Love the color effects!

  • wow! great editing. the trees looked just like paintings.

  • Fantastic editing!

  • I enjoyed it very much.

  • my response kayki, I like the singing I was refering to those who were complaining to the singing style , I love mozart , bach , wagner as well

  • I think the vocals make the song.

Glass is of course always great, but this song would not be abstract, or as beautiful with out the vocals.

And the last line makes me cry, lol.

  • why questions a mans vision , either you like it or not , . . . who will know in a 100 years , [lol ]

  • Say that to Mozart, or Bach.

  • And you can't tell what the words are about anyway!

  • This music feels like Joy!

  • Although Linda Ronstadt is the one singing, huh? Peace.

  • wait what?

  • I did!!! I swear! I listened to it at least 3 and a half times. I just can not get past that singing. It annoys me and I feel it totally takes away from the music itself. I would have enjoyed this if it was entirely music/melody. Sorry...

  • lol xD

I hated it to begin with and would have completely agreed with you... but it grew on me. It is a character telling a story, the fact she has a clearly American accent and isn't singing hugely operatic seems to add to it. Maybe it will grow on you, maybe not.

  • Yea, I totally agree. The singing KILLED it!! HORRIBLE!!

  • Nah it didn't. You need to listen to it a few times before truly appreciating it.

  • Possibly my favorite Phillip glass tune :O

  • That lyric, word are ughh.......

It's better to be whole melody. Words killed it.

  • It's better to be whole melody? well what do you think the voice is doing singing the Melody!!! Duh.

  • It's only one word-FANTASTIC!!!!!!!!!!

  • This music feels like Joy!

  • I am seriously impressed. Great song. Great video. Any more videos like this???

  • People have made all kinds of videos with images and P.Glass's music: landscapes, Monet's paintings, an aquarium, even photos of James Dean.

  • this is what music is about,

    portraying this kind of emotion

  • the videography is really cool

  • Extraordinaria y muy emocional :)

  • excellent video...

  • What a song!

  • windows movie maker...

    Reggio docet

  • looks like brighton pier to meee :)

  • hey! you have feeling for editing, it fits nice with the sound!=)
