Hitler, Stalin, Mao, all communists, all socialists, all "government has the solution"-ists. Anyone who thinks the collective's rights exceed the individuals. That is a progressive. But the only thing really progressive about that is, well, nothing.

The tragic thing about Romney's campaign is that if he ran as a progressive republican instead of a savage like the rest of them, he would be more attractive to more voters. This whole debate comes down to choosing either the least crazy Republican, and then deciding whether s/he's better than Obama not doing anything for another two years.
Mitt Romney would definitely fill the niche of least crazy republican if he ran like it. I think that trying to sink to his opponents' level is killing him.

Canadian conservatives and British conservatives are much more moderate by American standards, i'll use national health care as an example, no American conservative politician would approve of that.
