Will people stop criticising Carlos's Cantonese-.-? Do you guys actually know how hard it is learning Cantonese as a second language? Learing Cantonese is not like English, since changing the tone when saying a word actually makes a difference! Even though he's got some weird accents sometimes which is normal (just sometimes:P) But he's like crazy knowing all those words and the fact that he can write/ type it and speak it fluently. I mean, at least we understand, right? Good job tho, Carlos!
Just as a question, why would you choose to learn cantonese over mandarin? It seems really hard to learn canto and most people in HK speak mandarin as well...
The one I have heard is apparently 'bird' (Or something similar sounding) can be slang for penis. So a guy would offer to a girl if she wanted to play his Angry bird game.
@carlosdouh, lol....u don't understand my chinglish? I mean your pronounciation of ''cho B ba bai (嘈B巴閉) is wrong, you should pronounce it like ''cho huen ba bai'' ( 嘈喧巴閉). And actually ''two hundred thousand years'' you pronounced as ''twenty-night-year''! But I believe we all love the way you pronounce!
@NAOKOCHU i was using beijing mandarin accent when i was in guangzhou, the lady that took my order in a restaurant said "it seems you are struggling with mandarin, do you want me to speak english", felt pretty much insulted that someone with a shitty cantonese mandarin accent told me that lol..
@shazbots pronouncing "L" instead of "N" is what we call "a lazy tone", but it's totally acceptable as this is the most common case of lazy tones. Not many people would say "niu" these days anyway.
@shazbots Just like nike and like. They are not the same. In Hong Kong Chinese Speaking exams, you are required to speak the L sound and N sound differently.
@shazbots i guess people pronounce it the same way now pretty much, because it is not necessary to define "niu" and "liu", people will get it either way when you're communicating, like native canto speakers mostly wouldn't mind their pronunciation much, they would be able to identify "niu" and "liu" by simply looking at the whole phrase or sentence. But as for a cantonese learner, it would be the best for you to notice the difference :)
@shazbots it seems to be kind of hong kong cantonese. They often change "n" into "l" as in 你好 nei5 hou2.
It's the opposite as some parts of Guangdong in which they change "l" into "n" so they will pronounce 道理 instead of dou6 lei5 they will pronounce dou6 nei5.
@shazbots Pronounciation in cantonese and mandarin are different even though they are both chinese. Carlos is correct in cantonese, both of these are pronounced the same. In mandarin, they are different.
@angel2lee Then the words which means "stress" is different than "angry", it's "faan" rather "fan". So when you say "stress" in Cantonese, you say "fan low" in English, and when you say "angry" in Cantonese, you say "fun low" in English.
yes, cable TV service always sucks!! :)
i can't believe watching a white guy speak cantonese can be so funny!
