  • If this dont bring a tear your dead inside

  • Maybe it's an indication of a generation gap, but in record shops you can find albums by Rufus and Martha, but none of Loudon's. Shame.

  • country, jazz, blues, rock, progressive, satire. From OUR diapers to OUR grave. This man has TALENT! It's a shame more people haven't even heard of Loudon Wainwright. However, not being heard by everyone in the long run is best for Loudin Wainwright and us! " Keep on keeping on" All my love to everyone.... DON

  • poignant

  • probably one of the most undervalued songwriters of the last 40 years. He can make you laugh and cry in the same song

  • It's taken me thirty years to get around to Mr Wainwright; everything comes to he who waits.

  • this song says all the shit that my dad didnt say to me when my parents divorced. wierd listening to this after hearing my parents fight earlier today. makes more sense when someone puts it together musically. you understand your, my or anyones divorce so much easier

  • @bigpimpdaddy69 Well, i looked for some Louden... dude, i could say a lot...but it's not for the internet :D

  • 2 of my fav's- Loudon Wainwright & Austin City Limits

  • I love how his songs tell stories that the average person can relate to. Amazing musician! :)

  • wow, he wrote "your mother and I" to his children and his daughter martha wainwright wrote "bloody mother fucking asshole" back to him. ..hehee what a talented family.

  • i love this song. got me thru my parents divorce. im in love with it, and im only 13

  • What a really inappropriate intro to a song about divorce/separation. The song itself is wonderfully written and sung, but in terms of introduction...

  • probably one of the most idiosyncratic songwriter ever

  • I like the Undeclared version better.

  • @Fracassi1

What do you mean by "Undeclared version"?

  • @noiledp I can answer this! Loudon was on show back in 2000 called "Undeclared", in which he sang a song for Adam Sandler about being mad at his wife.

  • amazing writing and singing it make me get a lump in my throat fair play to you true legend

  • thanks

  • great song, great man, seen him live several times and so should you.

  • What a beautiful, sad song.

  • I saw him sing that at the Palms Playhouse in Davis, CA back in the 80's ... he was awesome then and always will be...thx for posting..kat

  • Wow....that was absolutely beautiful.

  • MARTHA ROKS TOO. VERY TALENTED FAMILY

  • Heavy.. ! Beautiful too

  • anyone has tabs?

  • The chords are A, D and E. That repeated part is just bouncing up to the Asus4 by raising the Db to a D on the B string. The finger-picking you can get by sounding it out. Down with tabs! Use your ears!

  • Thanks big time!

I use my ears, but I don't play guitar that long yet and my ears don't work as well as yours.

    Thanks again

  • rufus looks sooooo much like him.. even when they talk they sound the same lol

thank god for the wainwright family, i love all of their music!

    this song and "unhappy anniversary"

both sad songs, but great songs

  • this is such a beautiful song and i'm very grateful i never needed to hear it when i was a kid.

  • what is with that HQ he talks about in the beginning?

    love it BTW

  • The Armadillo World Headquarters Austin,Texas

    Wikipedia

  • ... your folks fell in love

    love's a very deep hole...

  • amen.

  • is this guy related to rufus wainwright?

  • yeah his dad

  • I grew up with loudon and i have recently heard his son i wish my parents would take loudon's advice with this song. Its better for a child to grow up with a divorced family than with an argumentative one!

  • When youre in a divorcee phase, its sad,

but sing this song to your children.

    Its great!!

So much tks 4 posting, thats all I can say!

  • '99 i believe

  • When was this concert?

  • Very sensitive and beautiful, it brings me to tears! I love him!

  • IMHO his best song - but if you ever get a chance to catch LW3 live, DO IT... he's even better live, OMG

  • "Last Man On Earth" is my fave. I can't find the video, but I saw it live and it made me cry.

  • brilliant...and it shows what a wonderful influence he had on his son rufus.

  • brilliant the honesty

i bet i can safely say that all us loudo fans can be gratefull for loudo sharing his life with us

i feel like i know him jst cozz hes so honest bout his feeling and what emotions he puts in songs

  • going to see Loudon for the fourth time in a few weeks, great man

  • the very first song i ever heard of his was the human cannonball, i got a loan of the cd off a friend and never gave it back. i saw him last year in dublin and he just was amazing if i could onlt be a tenth as good as he i would be happy.

  • Togehter with Bob dylan Louden marked a period in my life, an now 28 years later its still a man i can keep on listening to and an inspit\ration to songs an gitar playing for me today. Amazing muziek

  • die achternaam en amazing muziek, je moet wel nederlands zijn. Wat een mooie muziek!!

  • loudon wainwright is amazing, i could listen to him every day of my life, he is one of my heros

  • He is the image of rufus<<or the other way round.

  • I saw him sing this at the (now razed) Palms Playhouse in Davis, CA...a special memory...thanks for posting kat

  • Remarkable how many of his mannerisms Rufus has picked up. And the physical resemblance is striking.

  • he did it

  • My all time favourite by Loudon. Love his work.

  • Great song very well written

  • beautiful and touching.

  • Well if you don´t like him why listen to him? Obviously you do that since you have opinions in it... I have seen you trash alot of his songs here... Listen to what you think is good instead! And stop complaining!

  • Maybe the best song about divorce and children ever written...and maybe the best pure songwriter of our generation.

  • I appreciate your opinion, but I think you are badly misreading this man. He is a showman for sure, and perhaps that is what you are hung up on, but his songs run the full experience of life (happy, sad, heartbreaking, and yes foolish). You can't write these kind of songs and be a jerk. -Ron

  • what the hell are you talking about? i like your little rufus mention - totally irrelevant, but good thing you let everyone know he's rufus' dad.

  • There's a lot of narcissism and egotism in this business and it's probably fair to say that the performers in this family may have them and they may clash occasionally, which makes no difference to the fact that (in my opinion at least) Loudon is an extraordinarily good singer and songwriter with a basically unparalleled back catalogue of amazing songs. And neither does it stop Martha or Rufus being incredibly talented either.

Regardless, the song was written for his daughter Lucy, not Rufus.

  • The song is written for both of them, /care?

  • A perfect little Loudo ballad. Yes.

  • Thank you so much for this - it's a terrific song.
