@trr38skyhot I have the Weller WESD51 which is a 50w with a temperature range between 350F- 850F. You may not need something like this as a standard soldering iron will do the job...look for something that is 35w or higher and gets hot enough for your application. The reason I like the WESD51 is that I can dial the temp in to whatever is required for a particular job.. .. you can damage the component if the temp is to high.
thumbs up for this! just one question i have.. doesn't it matter that we use red instead of blue leds, in terms of difference in voltage requirements..?
@madviktorr Yeah, the closer you can find red ones to the same voltage drop as the blue ones, the better off you are. I have had mine in for 2 yrs with no problem, of course overtime it will reduce the life span. You cam always change out the resistors on the controller to accommodate the red LED's, but for me I thought if the red ones burned out prematurely then I would just replace them...but so far so good.
@WestCoastMods Some people don't like bright lightscomming from their computers, kinda distracting, especially if you have ADD lol I dunno, I often see complaints about bright leds lol just a guess.
@nambinhvu Yeah, thats probably why. It can be distracting while playing games in a dark room. It really depends where you have the PC setup at. I have mine off to the right side of me, and almost a little behind me, so it doesn't bother me at all. I have a very large "L" shape desk configuration.
@LemonAndYoghurt There are 3 ways that come to mind...the first and to the best is use a fan controller, that way you can adjust accordingly. The 2nd is to undervolt by switching the cables around and having the 5v resist the 12v and now you get 7v...You can also cut in a toggle switch 12v or 7v Google it, there's a lot of how to's out there. The 3rd is to cut in a resistor, you will have to mess around with different resistors till you get the desired speed. But this way you only have 1 speed.
Hey lazyman! i got my fan controller finally....and holy Sh#& The LED's are bright! i might switch them to red and the power and hdd LED's on my HAF 932 Black....
Just wanted to let u know I think your channel is awsome i find your videos very helpful so far i have managed all my cables and will be b getting my case sprayed ready for my next project as a noob modder you r helping me lots thanks for the uploads
Love your vids! Not only you do cool AND helpfull (you really helped me for alot of things), but you are one of the few doing it with a high quality camera. Thumbs up!
i got just one thing. if u used a finer tip would been better. ur board was starting to get dark ( Sign of burning ) lol, but @least u know what you are doing.
@StandupH2o Yeah, really no worries as I took a stainless steel brush and cleaned it up. They sell these little brushes just for this reason, but I actually got mine from work.
These may work, but the resistors are going to be under sizes, which may cause the LED's to burn out prematurely. I would either order 5v LED's online or change out the resistors on the controller. It may be easier just to order them online and wait a few days till they arrive. Have you tried Micro Center or some other electronic store?
Frozen CPU is a good choice. Also there is Performance PC's, Crazy PC's and the one I use is for client builds are from SuperBriteLed. For my personal rigs I use Linrose brand, but they are a little spendy, but great quality. This is just for future reference.
ok then nice job. last question though. i did not understand how you find out the positive and the negative poll on the circuit board. i ask you cause i want to do tha same thing..
After desoldering the first LED's use a 9 volt battery to test to see which side is positive and then remember which side of the board it came from. Once you know which side is positive on one the rest will all be the same.
The LEDs are Linrose brand, and I bought them at Fry's Elcetronics, but can also buy them online. just Google Linrose LED's. However thet are on the pricey side. But IMO one of the best made/quality LED's on the market. The ones I used were 3mm 10,000 mcd.
Very nice video! Each one opens doors to new ideas and possibilities, thanks alot. With your creativity; how hard do you think it might be creating/customising some cooling fans? Just a thought. Cheers : ]

I'd think that you are flawless :p. very nice! a couple q's though...do u do orders online? or just local? I dont know if i should build my own "rig" or have someone build it with me...please give me some advice. thank you ;)
Thanks bro! I always encourage ppl to try to build their own, because if you don't try they'll never know. It's really not that hard to put components in a box, that's the easy part, but if you want to do any modifications that's where some ppl may have a little difficulty.
Maybe they don't have the proper tools, maybe they don't have the time and patience or simple just don't have the skill. So if that the case, then I am always willing to help.
The level of professional quality you maintain in these projects is outstanding. You give plain facts, no hype or boasting, during the videos and for that I must say these are the most enjoyable mod videos I've seen. I find myself searching for more of your work just to watch regardless of if I have any notion of doing said mod, lol. Thnx for taking the time to do this.
Thanks for the video. Very informative. I'm no electrical guru, but I was always told that you would need to add/remove resistors if you are changing LED colors? Thoughts?
First of all, just wanted to say sorry for the late reply.
Anyway you are correct, there are times when you would need to change the resistor, either higher or lower depending on the situation. But in this case, if memory serves me right, they were very close or the blue ones that I replaced with the red ones had a lower forward voltage than the red ones, meaning the blue ones required a higher resistor. So the resistor on the board should be fine. If not I'll just replace them, pretty simple.
I remember making a digital turkey with leds and a 555 timer it was fucking sweet the tail light up in different patterns and what not. I love soldering, i solder all my pc connections, tin all my audio cables for my speakers for both the house and car. you get a much better nicer connection.
Thanks for reply Lazy Man. No problem w/delay as I know you have plenty of work, family and life.
Hmm, will burn out sooner. Well, I suppose these will have to do if I can't find more exact one's locally. Wasn't real thrilled w/ the blue after I bought since the whole point was to get away from that. Got me thinking about it again!!!
Yeah, when I say sooner, I have no idea what that means in actual time. Never done test myself, just a bunch of reading. Heck they could last for years, they just will burn out before the blue ones do. You can get 3.0v LED's, I think in all colors at Super Bright LED's or Performance PC's.

Sorry for the delay, been pretty busy. Anyway 3.5v will be just fine. Sometimes if the LED requires more voltage than the resistor is letting through than the LED wont light up. But in this case I think you will be fine.
I believe the LED's in the controller are 3.0v so the 3.5 blue should be fine and the red 2.5 should also be fine, they may burn out sooner than the blue ones, because they are getting a higher voltage than what is recommended.

Thanks, I was holding my breath too. I purposely wanted to fire it up without editing the film so ppl would see that it is real easy and that the controller still worked after soldering.
When the last two didn't come on, I thought oh shit, what did I do wrong? I'm glad it was just that they were turned off. LOL
You can definitely buy leds that change color depending on the voltage that is applied. So by turning the knob it would cause the led to go from blue to red for example. They have fan controllers that are sold that way, buy my whole reason for this mod was to eliminate the blue light.
And anyway, my fans will probably be at 50-60% all the time, so they would always be red even if i had a multi color led.
You are so inspirational! Man, you have good videos. Great job, looks good. I've wanted a fan controller on my Cosmos i7, but I've always hated the fact that I couldn't find any with purple LED's. Well, now I may have another project on my hands. ; ) Thanks,
I'm really not to sure about that. IMO I think it looks better against the black brushed aluminum. And my plastic cover was scratched a little, brand new out of the box.
If you look at the LED itself there are 2 pieces in it. One small and one large. The smaller one is connected to the positive wire and the larger one is connected to the negative wire.
I'm not talking about the pins. He asked how to identify which side in the led has the positive and negative. In the actual bulb the smaller part is connected to the positive and the larger part is connected to the negative.
I took one of the new LED's and held the pins up to the old LED's pins and when the new LED lite up I knew they were in the right orientation. If the light doesn't come on then they are backwards.
I hope this makes sense, I should have shown that in the vid, I will next time.
Oh, you saw my screwdrivers, didn't even know they were in the video. I love them, They are a lot cheaper than shorting out something. Well worth the money! IMO
Remember that when you solder you don't allow the connections to be connected with extra solder otherwise it will cause a short.

When the last two didn't come on, I thought oh shit, what did I do wrong? I'm glad it was just that they were turned off. LOL

dude just currious can it be done where when its on low the leds are blue but when its high the led's are red? that would look pretty sweet.
not very good with led's so i dont know if it can be done.
DarksideShuffle 2 years ago
You can definitely buy leds that change color depending on the voltage that is applied. So by turning the knob it would cause the led to go from blue to red for example. They have fan controllers that are sold that way, buy my whole reason for this mod was to eliminate the blue light.
And anyway, my fans will probably be at 50-60% all the time, so they would always be red even if i had a multi color led.

Damn, yea that would be a bit of a turn off if its scratched.

You are so inspirational! Man, you have good videos. Great job, looks good. I've wanted a fan controller on my Cosmos i7, but I've always hated the fact that I couldn't find any with purple LED's. Well, now I may have another project on my hands. ; ) Thanks,

The plastic is nice on the front, it makes the lights illuminate better around the entire controller.
xXAlphaRevanXx 2 years ago
I'm really not to sure about that. IMO I think it looks better against the black brushed aluminum. And my plastic cover was scratched a little, brand new out of the box.

Hey man how did you figure out which was +/- on the board?
Xezmer 2 years ago
If you look at the LED itself there are 2 pieces in it. One small and one large. The smaller one is connected to the positive wire and the larger one is connected to the negative wire.
doghairr 2 years ago
Sorry doghairr, the large pin is positive (Anode) and the smaller of the two is the negative (Cathode)
WestCoastMods 2 years ago
I'm not talking about the pins. He asked how to identify which side in the led has the positive and negative. In the actual bulb the smaller part is connected to the positive and the larger part is connected to the negative.
doghairr 2 years ago
hehe, sorry bro, my eyes aren't good enough to look in the actual bulb. I just look at the protruding pins.
But your way would come in handy if you had to reuse a led that had already been clipped down.
Great Tip
LazyMan
WestCoastMods 2 years ago
I took one of the new LED's and held the pins up to the old LED's pins and when the new LED lite up I knew they were in the right orientation. If the light doesn't come on then they are backwards.
I hope this makes sense, I should have shown that in the vid, I will next time.

i got the same type of screwdrivers :D Pretty expensive but good for electrician jobs :D
denhoskes2208 2 years ago
Oh, you saw my screwdrivers, didn't even know they were in the video. I love them, They are a lot cheaper than shorting out something. Well worth the money! IMO
WestCoastMods 2 years ago
yea they are, never had better quality screwdrivers!
