[Continuing on from my previous 'post' about Michael Johnson]: had the physical potential to be a world-class half-miler (800 metres runner), but I don't think that he ever had any desire to compete in that event at the top level.
Maybe his mate Jerry Wariner will turn his talents to the 800 metres at some stage within the next couple of years; there are many knowledgeable athletics pundits who believe that JW has a huge amount of potential in the two lap event.
Mr Michael Johnson ... the greatest long-distance sprinter in the history of track and field athletics. At one time, the big Texan held the world records for the 200 metres, 300 metres and 400 metres SIMULTANEOUSLY. (To this day, he still holds the world records for the 300m and 400m - over a decade after he hung up his spikes, as it were, and retired from competitive athletics.)
MJ had a superb range of ability - he was excellent at 100m, 200m, 300m and 400m. I would even say that he

What an amazing athlete MJ was, back in the 1990s. His pure speed/sheer sprinting ability was considerable, and his speed endurance was absolutely remarkable ... incredible. Let us not forget that, in the July of 1996 - when he won the 200 metres final in Atlanta, in the lightning fast time of 19.32 - he had never officially broken the 10 second barrier in the shorter sprint!!
@mubpfc If you look at this race here, even though Johnson was having a once in a lifetime out of body experience and lowered his PB by 0.34 seconds, he and Frankie were even after the 1st 100 metres.

I think he was in good enough shape to go sub 10, but not to beat the 100/200 specialists over the shorter distance. also, there is such a thing as timetables. It's impossible to run all three events in the same games, that would mean 12 starts in less than a week.
i rode my bike around the track as fast as i could and i barely beat his 400 time and his 200 time was faster by 2 seconds and i had a rolling start. Its crazy that someone could run that fast because i thought i was flying on my bike.

they don't make sprinters like michael johnson anymore, they didn't even in his day, actually- so very humble, a true sportsman. he was my inspiration, especially over the 400 flat.

19.32 is still the 2nd fastest time for the 200m. Other than Bolt, no one has got anywhere near it ever since. 3rd is Tyson Gay 19.58. He completely smashed the other racers in this race and they were running amazing times. Frank Fredericks 19.68, Ato Bolden 19.8.
@TheTzdope actually bolt started out running the 400, and made the switch to specialize in the 200 only in 2005. He just too lazy to go after the 400 wr.
@Mandela08 Actually Bolt started off as a 200m/400m sprinter, he's aways been a 200m specialist. And I wouldn't say he's too lazy, Bolt's just dominant in 100m and 200m right now. He said he might train seriously for the 400m in 2012, but honestly, even with training I doubt Bolt can break MJ's 43.18. We'll see.
Still get shivers watching this race. After all the mind games between Ato Boldon and Frankie Fredricks the stage was set for an epic showdown and when MJ did this and destroyed the field it was and still is to me (even with usains, insane times) the most incredible race i have ever seen.

It would have been a great race(Bolt vrs Johnson) the 200. Both men are and were awesom. Mike looked funny when he ran but if you look at old Jessie Owens video they look very similar. Not a bad person to be compared to. IF Bolt runs the 400 he might be able to break 43. I think he would be amazing at 400 hurdles too.
It would be nice if everyone could enjoy the athletic performance and stop using such vulgar terms when speaking to each other. That would be nice!!
Imagine Bolt and Johnson running the 200m against each other. Bolt would destroy Johnson on the bend and then Johnson's strength would bring him back. Against Bolt in that Olympic final i think it would have been a dead heat at around 19.20 ish. Having that person alongside you really does give you the extra impetus to go that little bit faster!

Mike was on his game---this race is nothing less than amazing the way this man blazed down the track. Now I grew up watching Carl Lewis run people down and and I thought his legacy was nothing short of great--but what Mike did that day----AMAZING ----Skyline High School 85' Mike you represented. HMMM and let's not even through your 400 meter runs in there. Mike was the one who turned that race into a full out sprint. Young Man You Did Your Job!

This run was nothing short of stunning and I was so naive to think it a record that would stand for eternity. I always saw his 400m as the more susceptible record.
Mike's form is pretty bad actually. He runs straight up, stiff with no leg drive. I love seeing this guy run but its not hard to see why Usain is faster. Freak of nature+ Damn good running form= amazing times.
If usain Bolt has the form that Johnson had the sky is the limit for what usain can run in the 200m. Bolt still don't run the curve the way it suppose to run the Johnson run the curve that the best ever.

Tho, Bolt ran 19.19 and Jonhson ran 19.32, he didnt only pass him by leaning his head, thats 0.13 seconds of gap, which, at that speed, makes a distance gap of about 1.5 meters.

Questo record è stato battuto a Pechino 2008, con 19.30 da Bolt, e probabilmente verrà ritoccato stasera sempre da Bolt. Però Johnson è stato davvero un GRANDISSIMO dell'atletica.

divide by two = 9.66.....so lets say he runs around 8.5 second in the final 100..
so thats around 10 seconds which at the time could have won the 100...

Imagine Bolt and Johnson running the 200m against each other. Bolt would destroy Johnson on the bend and then Johnson's strength would bring him back. Against Bolt in that Olympic final i think it would have been a dead heat at around 19.20 ish. Having that person alongside you really does give you the extra impetus to go that little bit faster!

Mike was on his game---this race is nothing less than amazing the way this man blazed down the track. Now I grew up watching Carl Lewis run people down and and I thought his legacy was nothing short of great--but what Mike did that day----AMAZING ----Skyline High School 85' Mike you represented. HMMM and let's not even through your 400 meter runs in there. Mike was the one who turned that race into a full out sprint. Young Man You Did Your Job!

Mike's form is pretty bad actually. He runs straight up, stiff with no leg drive. I love seeing this guy run but its not hard to see why Usain is faster. Freak of nature+ Damn good running form= amazing times.

Tho, Bolt ran 19.19 and Jonhson ran 19.32, he didnt only pass him by leaning his head, thats 0.13 seconds of gap, which, at that speed, makes a distance gap of about 1.5 meters.

Ancora quando vedo sta gara ho la pelle d'oca, Johnson è stato uno dei più grandi velocisti di sempre considerando l'anno, ma Bolt, bisogna ammetterlo, è il numero uno. Ha dominato negli ultimi anni e lo farà per molto ancora i 100(gara regina) e i 200 metri, senza considerare che ha giurato di provare a battere il record nei 400m a Londra nel 2012. Questo record è stato battuto a Pechino 2008, con 19.30 da Bolt, e probabilmente verrà ritoccato stasera sempre da Bolt. Però Johnson è stato davvero un GRANDISSIMO dell'atletica.
