The bigger ones (horse flies) will take a bite out of you ! The normal flies in QLD try get in the corners of your eyes and go down your throat! I hate it!

Though it is not typical to meet a lot of flies on the Great Ocean Road, there are always plenty of them in the desert. You have to get used to them.

I was on the Great Ocean Road around the same time this video was shot, and was told by a Victorian that the winds had blown them in from NSW. My experience in SA, VIC, NSW, and ACT - they're EVERYWHERE! And I've been told this happens EVERY SUMMER. Lonely Planet makes no mention of this...
