The original strap was sewn around those clips so it couldn't come loose. You should sew the new one fast too.
The whole process would be so much easier if you just unclip the strap, then rotate the clip a bit so you can take it out through the end of the mask. Use a seam ripper like ACDCdude953 points out. No scissors necessary. Put the new strap onto the clips in the right orientation and sew it fast, then reattach to the mask. May take longer than your way but it sounds safer to me.

you dont need to cut anything thats a waste of a strap... if anything just use a seam ripper and take out the thread dont cut it
