I stumbled upon your talents when searching for Tori Amos pieces, and I have been a fan ever since. Your voice and emotion, when singing, are incredibly stunning, haunting and beautiful. You have a rare and special gift - to move ones soul profoundly with your voice and music - please continue to share it with us!
Obviously, you're amazing. You made me discover some incredible artists, including you. I'm just wondering, is there any way that I can download/buy your covers and music?

It's a good rendition, but I think its difficult to watch you sing it. Your facial expressions are a little too wholesome and high school drama club-like.

What Cohen's voice does that this singer and most others don't manage is inject a real sense of wretchedness into the words. When Cohen sings it, he sounds like a broken man. Every other version tends to be far too pretty, and as such sounds about as genuine and emotional as a Disney princess.

I was prepared to hate this video... but am surprisingly fascinated by it. And re: the comments below... taking a deep breath first. Going clear is a Scientology reference. But, I agree, it could easily be a drug reference. However... with repect to Lili Marlene... she is the archetypical "girl at home" from the WW2 era. Here's the deal. Leonard got the girl back. But it was a shallow victory. He's writing to his old buddy who stole her for a time. Anyway, thanks for the ride, Matt.
Tell me about you - Are you on broudway? I watch this crap all the time and never seen anything this good - watch my crap!!! I found you cause of Cohen songs "hallelujah" so I ventured to learn more!! You totally moved me! Thank you!
One of the best renditions of one of my favorite songs of all time. And the way you performed it (your voice, the piano, your facial expressions) all elevated it to newer heights. Great job.
PS. does anyone know the story in this song? I'm very curious.
Sort of both. What is he singing about when he talks to this person who obviously shares a past with him? If there's a story to this song (true or made up) I'd like to hear it.
The story of the song is a triangle between a Man, his wife Jane, and his friend who fell in love with Jane. The friend tried to run away with her for good, but on the night he planned "to go clear", Jane never shows up.. The friend is devistated.. "Living for nothing now". The man feel his betrail hard, yet he somewhat forgive his former friend, and thank him for the things he has done for Jane, that he himself could never do..
I think the "story" is a bit deeper than that. There are actually four characters in this story: the writer, his wife, the lover and something from which he "meant to go clear" I've always thought the implication was a drug addiction, but I could be wrong. I don't think "Lili Marlene" refers to "Jane",
Note how the writer says the "the last time WE saw you" meaning I assume Jane and the writer, this would cancel out the idea of Jane not showing up.
Well either way the lyric is sort of a hash: Jane is both there "well I see Jane's awake" and not there "Jane came by" and the realtionship between the men is a bit murky, could be his brother and things seem to have gotten violent "glad you stood in my way"
Lili is from a german WWI poem/lyric and was the girl under the lamplight, that the fighting soldier pined for. It's a very intersting and ambivelent little ditty, beats the hell out of me how it fits here.
For your other question..: Cohen tend to make his songs based on true stories, however Cohen has claimed he do not remember wether the triangle was his own, a friends or imaginary.. It remains a beautifull mystery =)
Thanks teakzor, that is what I thought too. However parts of the lyrics made me curious because they didn't fit: "You came home alone without Lili Marlene" "Im glad you stood in my way." "Your enemy is sleeping, and his woman is free." It almost sounds like the friend saved the woman from some abusive relationship. Guess we'll never know :)
please, listen to the vesion that joan baez sings, it's sooooooo beutifulllll. I listened it 20 years ago, when i was 10. I can't find her on you tube, but if you can then listen to it, she sings it the best!!!!
Holy Mother of God! I've never heard it done SO well before! I was looking for the Jennifer Warns version, and found this...amazing!!! (Oh, to the comment before me...The "Sincerely" was Sincerley, A Friend...the last I heard it.)
thanks! re: the last line: I've only heard the L. Cohen line and it didn't even occur to me to change it to something else. No disrespect meant, in fact, I would have felt weird messing with the words.
No need to apologize at all...I actually thought it was done in hommage. Anyways, keep it up. I checked out some of your other vids, and I'm wondering if you take requests....LMAO! (JK) Awesome voice!
Cohen usually sings "Sincerely a friend" when preforming live. I have seen him 3 times and its always the same. He's a personal guy who bonds/relates with his audience, who, over the years have become close to him. LC is a man indebted to those who have followed and supported him throughout his career
i just wanted to say thanks coz i didn't know that song, but now i cant keep it outta my mind... and i really do think you're doing quite a great work!! keep on doin' this dude^^
Hey, Ive been listening to and playing Leonard Cohen for some 33 years now and man that was just Awesome. Truely awesome. However the signature at the end I think it was wrong to use Cohen's name but i'm sure Cohen would be proud for you to use it on such a fantastic redition. Respect.

About "lili Marlene".. It's a name used by not only cohen but many artists, among them Bob dylan.
I belive it's from a poem written during the world war by a german solider about his true love, that he can not have.
I think the lover "meant to go clear" with the writers wife... It's a manner of speech.

LC is a man indebted to those who have followed and supported him throughout his career

ça ne dégouline pas un peu trop? Trop de suffisance et trop peu de sincérité.

Matthew... great work... you remind me somewhat of another individual I also discovered though this medium
Andy Scisco. His song "You and I begin" for instance is what made me think of the similarity.... keep up the good work.... very enjoyable

Hey, Ive been listening to and playing Leonard Cohen for some 33 years now and man that was just Awesome. Truely awesome. However the signature at the end I think it was wrong to use Cohen's name but i'm sure Cohen would be proud for you to use it on such a fantastic redition. Respect.

Um, the "Sincerely L. Cohen" is part of the song... Chill.
