This is what annoys me about TG sometimes - my folks had one when I was a kid and I expected a decent review with a great sound, not Jez complaining about speedbumps.
There are roads that don't have them.... Same ones also have nice corners, straights and little traffic.
My first car. I tuned it up. The turbo lag has been reduced. My friends hate it because I'm 17 paid 5500 for the car and I'm the only person with a Turbo and better yet a Porsche at my school. The girls love it. :D
@sounddrums I feel ya man!! I payed 8500 for mine but its in mint condition and only at 72K miles with the special 2.7 NA motor!! hahaha Porsche bro's
@WillRod322 Turbo and non turbo engines have different compression, camshafts and other mechanical components you'd have to rebuild the engine to put turbo on it and it still wouldn't be reliable.
i have a 84 944 and iam trying to get a turbo for it do anyone knows where i can look for one i have a none turbo now but the car is sweet looking love the car but i think it will be better with a turbo
@WillRod322 I was told a while ago that you cannot put a turbo on a non turbo version. I was told you'd have to put a supercharger on it. If that's accurate I don't know, because I never called around and asked others about it or read up on it.
i had a 84 944 n/a, fun car..i just recently drove a 89 rxl GXL. good car but still doesnt have the performance the porsche does in all aspecs even wit hit being a gxl...just fyi
@TucoRamirez2 You will be repairing it every week. Few members from local forum has it. He bought it for 6000$ CAD and his been repairing it almost every month. Parts are extremely expensive and the car is not that fast
@TucoRamirez2 If you get a solid car, it'll run great and are very reliable. Repairs though, are extremely expensive. Keep in mind now, most of these cars are well over 20 years old. I recommend spending a little more money and getting one with low to mid range miles. If not, you'll spend the money anyway later on repairs on high mileage cars. Whenever one of my old ones broke down, expect to spend at least a thousand to fix it.
So i beat this guy on a 944 turbo with my turboed 94 Ford Probe GT and when we pulled side by side he tells me his boost is delayed! Well I thought he gave me the ricers excuse because he provoked the race and now got butt hurt in front of his girl but i hear Jeremy mentioning turbo lag around 57 sec. I guess he should have downshifted but either way that's one car I'd love to built!
@PentruRasaAlba Almost all Porsches can be money pits, but the 928 can be the worse. I'd say go with a 951 and start the hobby with getting all the maintenance services done especially the timing belt and water pump. Even Stage 1 software really helps put these cars on the map against the more powerful 928 S4, GT(s), or 911's but a larger turbo is where you can start picking on the super cars and exotics that cost ten to 100 times more.
Oh I don't disagree with you there, I know the 951's can be made into some extremely fast road-rockets, it's just that the 928 has 'the looks' on the 944, and also the sound, love the V8 engine in the 928's. However, ultimately it comes down to money, and as you said, 944's are cheaper.
haha that was on another episode where they got 1500 quid to buy a porshe. and the only problem he had was a punctured tire. i plan to get one of these 944's also, but put a better turbo in and all :)
Porsche should make a new 944: a 4 cylinder, front engine, entry-level roadster.
Let them keep the 911. Give the Boxster and Cayman the same engines and give them the same name (the Cayman is just a Boxster with a roof). Then make a new 928, a front-engined, V8 sportscar that is faster than the 911. Then, restyle the Panamera to not look like a mangled ape and change the Cayenne from an SUV into an estate/crossover. That way, VW gets their increased model lineup, and we get better Porsches.
I have a 1986 944 turbo. It's White with a wide body kit. Really fun to drive and very fast. I'm looking to get rid of it to have more space for my other cars. Email me if you're interested and or want pictures (SELLING FOR VERY CHEAP) FLeduardoP@gmail.com
Love the 944 -- I used to have a 944 S2 from '89, and it was truly my favorite car, out of all the cars I've driven, and all the cars I've owned.
And to give you an idea, my first car when I was 16 was an '88 300ZX Turbo w/ manual tranny... drove a bunch of other sportscars and souped up ricers [i.e. Hondas, Eclipses, etc...], but nothing compared to that Porsche. =)
Now, I want to get either a 944 Turbo, or 928 S4/GT.
I love the 944s2 and I think the convertable is even better looking. Even today I would recommend a 944s2 to anyone, brilliant car, well built, lasts forever, looks good still, and goes very well!! Cheap quality motoring!!

@thinkpad411 for 1986, 220 hp out of a 4 cylinder engine was massive. it was a vette killer at 0-60 in under 5.5 seconds. and unfortunately the difference between a 944 turbo/s2 is DRASTICALLY different from the 924, considered the ULTRA entry level car at the time! with a van engine! still a porsche though:)
@oddzerozero Evidently there are regulations requiring the lights to be a certain distance above the ground. Pop up lights were the only way of meeting the regs. (Unless you want to to go the bugeye Sprite route.

Now this epitomises what i like most about Jeremy Clarkson's Car Reviews
(his wonderfully creative & ever varied usage of the English Language for example ; )
Interesting the Clarkson & Tiff Needel both love the 944 Turbo
(Tiff having raced them professionally & even buying one in the 1980's).
Couldn't agree more on Pop Up Headlamps too, why they can't style Cars as well as in the 1960's-early 1990's hayday is beyond me.
Supercar's should look like Science Fiction made real, not Tate Modern.
