This can happen if your example use material in your video that is copyrighted by somebody else. Let's say you have background music thats not royalty free. In this case they can play ads and the artist/record company etc will get paid.

@twigj93 No, only views. Comments, favs, and likes don't add to the money at all. The reason you see people ask for those things is to get them on the homepage(not likes anymore) and get their channel out there. That brings in a bigger audience, more views, etc.
