At the start of her career around the 70's, you could not see any footage or performance of her where she did not expose her midriff and shake her hips (a fact being parodied in this sketch) and in the 80's, she began to show her legs as well. You didn't see Gladys Knight, Judy Garland, or Peggy Lee shaking their hips for recognition and yet Charo can sing and play circles around them with her musical talents.

As a kid I always saw her on tv shows and never knew she always played the loud hispanic woman like on this show. As a guitar play for the last 15 years I was amazed at how good she really is. It is a shame that so many people like me may never realize what a talent she really is.

I don't think they did the rehearsals in full costume. It's very likely Charo was seeing Carol's costume for the first time at taping. If we roared when we saw it, imagine trying to be her, holding back her laugh so the show could go on!
