I, too saw this video in '94 on Headbanger's Ball. I bought the cassette, and to be honest, this was the only song I liked. I was thoroughlly disappointed with the rest of it. And I tried to like it, WANTED to like it. I really did. I listened to it over and over and the only thing I remember now was "Jana tested positive." But this song is a beast. I just sat here with my guitar and jammed out with the video for the first time in 17 years and still remembered most of it.
@soulkiss1001 No problem. ECW was an indy wrestling organization known for its high level of violence that used this Killing Joke song as their main anthem/theme song. I just typed "ECW anyone?" to see if anyone remembered that.
@robeorman The Joke just RULE, anyone that refers to a group as if it's a thing is a sad victim of the MTV age. You do it on purpose, and it is sad. A group is more than one person, so anyone that says "The Beatles is good" is a dickhead. Kick the trend, it's embarassing. Cat Stevens IS good, Killing Joke ARE good. It's not difficult.
@Spankabuttux Yeah, I know it's an old argument, but "are" only sounds right if the band's name ends with an "s", (i.e. The Beatles are awesome). Otherwise "is" is appropriate. Yes, a group is more than one person, but those people make up a group, therefore the group is the thing. And the thing are awesome. See how retarded that sounds? lol
@SpiderSkot Whether you treat a group as plural or singular depends on the regional usage. In the UK and Commonwealth countries, anything that is a plural entity in its parts is treated as plural. In the United States, the conjugation depends on the subject noun's number regardless of whether it integrates one or more than one. So, in Britain, Her Majesty's Government are a Conservative coalition. But in the United States, the Obama Administration is Democratic.
@TurtleFL An acceptable argument. It just goes to show how much difference a region can dictate the form of a language, even if it is at it's core, the same. Thank you for the insight.
@cofpaddy I voted your comment up despite the 20 year discrepancy, which was obviously deliberate. I'm so proud I get humour! Knock knock! Who's there? Doctor. etc. Lets hope everyone else is as smart. (I doubt it). Love your work!
The Zeppelin of the underground!! If that makes any sense?. Saw them 4 times... talked to Jaz once breifly back on these tour. Don't know how he is holding up these days?? nor Geordie??
@bvanwoud i saw them live 2 days ago. it was the best live experience of my life only compared to screamin jay hawkins and death in vegas both acts in 1999-2000. so to answer your question they are holding up quite well heres a video from the gig i went to /watch?v=bjT9thFifPc
BEHOLD!!!ALL MY LIFE IVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS MOMENT TO COOOOOOME
I always have tought that one of the reasons that this band was never been more financially succesful, is because of the "look" of Jaz Coleman. Please, do not misunderstand me, I LOVE Killing Joke, all albums, all songs, is just an hypothesis i have of this reason, that in this case, is not Important, since Killing Joke makes excellent music that please many people, including myself!
@LordNothing Back in the 80's we didn't even know what he looked like and didn't care. We didn't know what half of the alternative bands looked like in the USA because they weren't on MTV yet as 120 minutes, etc. And to buy their albums you had to drive deep into the city to Waxtrax Records. Then Your DJ friend with all the Vinyl bought the one album and made tapes for all his pals. I actually only bought 1 CD - this one. And they are one of my favorite bands.
@aodqw97 Actually I remember when it came out there was a "rawer" version circulating on some compilations. If anyone knows what I'm talking about and where to find it I would love to hear it again. I wanna say it was on a Spin Magazine sampler. Great tune!
Fear Factory did a version of this a few years ago, but this one's better. These guys were a big influence on Prong, too; Tommy Victor sings just like this guy.
This was the UK version, the version in the US is called the 'aotearoa mix', which was the original (and my person favorite version), but I still love and adore this CyberSank remix. It got me into the Joke.
i bought this record when it came out after seeing it on the old headbangers ball on mtv. i couldn't believe how this band stayed in the underground. pandemonium was quite possibly one of the greatest rock records ever made. i wore the fukin cassette out - i played it that many times. the mix of western and eastern sound on this album is fukin genius. @murraysdaddy I also bought the tape when it came out, most likely after seeing this video on either the Ball or 120 Minutes and I also wore it out. Agreed, Pandemonium was (and still is) a brilliant album.
fuckin brilliant song.i just realised this band influenced loads of my favourite bands like wtf they are playing extreme alternative industrial metal in the 80s how did they get the guitar sound to be so heavy and produced i thought that the heaviest stuff was sloppy distortion like sabbath and stufff in the 80s which i do think is brilliant but this is way ahead of its time faith no more nine inch nails nirvana a load of bands this inspired
I've heard it and it's not bad, but it's not really better than this.
