I, personally, think its silly to say that Frank Sinatra is solely a product of song selection. Most of the songs he performed have been recreated countless times, yet many have not drawn nearly the success nor popularity as his versions. Frank will be disliked because he is popular, and unfortunately ironic, popular because he was so damn good.
Simpl Frank at hes Incomparable BEST.............What a crooner he was........R.I.P Mr Sinatra you gave people music that will last an enternity............
@wickedphant0m I don't understand your comment...whether the two people in the song really want to be together or not is kind of irrelevant...for whatever reason their desires and/or needs are no longer the same and because of that they are going their separate ways...that is a breakup in my book. At any rate this version of the song by Frank is perfect.
@Steven197450 This song is from a musical, and the story is much more complicated than what Frank says at the point in the show that this is sung. For instance: he says they spent a long together until one decided to leave, but when this number happens, it's about 3 days after they'd seen each other for the first time in several years.
I feel like this is my life right now... I want to get her back so badly, but I don't know where to start. I don't know the answer to anything anymore...
I get chills when I hear this song interpreted by Sinatra. Many have recorded it, but can't compare to his style!! I agree with sherom "raw emotion" .
@sherom I guess it's a matter of taste. What I meant was that Crosby didn't have that hard-edged quality to his voice which so distinguished Sinatra. As I said at the conclusion of my comment, I think Sinatra was - and still is - the greatest. When you take all of the aspects of Sinatra's art together (interpretation, the raw emotion, the power of his projection and his natural musicality) then you have the perfect performer.
I believe that the great essence of Sinatra was his ability to combine a keen musicality with the depth of a fine actor. There is no doubt that Crosby had a more naturally beautiful voice, Tony Bennett had more powerful pipes and Dean Martin was more easy on the ear. But, sill and all, Sinatra has the power to compel. There is a wealth of experience and a depth of emotion, as well as an innate rythmic instinct which sets him apart. But, it's a matter of personal taste. I think he's the greatest.
When I was a hipster in the nineties, there was this point where everybody my age discovered Sinatra, and he became a big thing again for a while. I completely resisted it. And you know what, I still think his best talent was picking good songs. This is a great song, but I don't think there's anything particularly superior about the vocal. Just saying. Same thing w/ "My Way": it's the song, it's not him.
@MckyMseNTarotCrds True. These songs tell stories/lessons/experiences about life and Sinatra has the voice and emotion to tell you that story perfectly. There are not too many people who can really make you feel a song, in that way Sinatra was unique.
@RonnyLamme Sinatra made music for a half century. You need to discover his voice when he was young and singing with Harry James and Tommy Dorsey. There was nothing like it and women swooned. In his later years like this, it was all about his phrasing and emotion...telling the story of the song. To say he was big because he chose good songs is just ignorant. I'm sorry, I don't mean that as an insult. He was already a legend by the time he's singing Send in the Clowns.
@MckyMseNTarotCrds Nobody really cares; we come here to listen to Frank's voice and the songs he picked. A bunch of people also covered these songs; we really could just go listen to them rather than Frank if it was 'just the song.' Seems like you haven't grown out of that hipster phase.
@channelofvague Um. No. I'm sorry if you equate having an opinion with being a hipster. If I were such a hipster, I would have been into Sinatra back when everyone my age was. I wasn't, which was kind of my point. I just don't think the guy was that great a singer. Sorry. The best thing about Frank Sinatra was Phil Hartman's impression of him That was gold, Jack!
@MckyMseNTarotCrds A great performance is a combination of the song and the singer. Sinatra sang golden songs because he had a golden voice, and he could show the emotion and passion and love that made those songs so golden.
@heringtonchick Yeah, I know. I'm not sure why I even left my original comment. It's not really my style to be a "hater", to go to a video of a performance I don't really care for and comment on it. I'd rather spend my time listening to stuff I like. But then a bunch of people kept saying stuff in response, so I kept answering. If you like it, great. Enjoy! Nothing is better than listening to music you love...well, almost nothing.

The song's definitely not about a breakup. It's about two people who want to be together, but can't because of the circumstances of their lives.
