A way of determining the type of loco (GP7 or 9) is the louvres on the long hood. The GP7 has far less of them than a GP9 does, and on a 9 are located on the long hood doors in the general area where the dynamic brakes would be on a dynamic brake equiped version (GP9's came both non dynamic, and dynamic brakes). Also GP7s had bolted on handrails, most of the 9's are 'folded over'. (phase one GP9's also often had the bolted handrails). There, no rude language needed to explain that.
Love your vintage videos Jack! Especially the old geeps! Would love to see more! Hope my videos achieve as many views as yours do in the future. Thank you for your hard work. I sent you a video response with my very own video of GP9 diesels. Your Facebook friend, -Drayton
@BadassDodgeRam3500 You better do your research dumbass!!! Its a GP9!!! You just made an ass of of yourself. Check Wikipedia and the owners of GP9's. ONR had ordered 6, and 1605 is one of them...
Having or not having dynamic brakes has nothing to do with whether or not the locomotive is a GP7 or GP9. It was an option offered by EMD on both classes of locomotive. Some roads ordered GP7's with dynamic brakes (Maine Central for example) and some owned GP9's without dynamic brakes (Burlington Northern).
There are spotting features to distinguish the two. GP7's have 3 sets of louvers underneath the cab window whereas GP9's do not. (Take a look at the locomotive in the video.) The louver pattern is different on the long hood as well.
Many of the differences between the two locomotives were internal. The primary improvement is that a GP9 has 1750 horsepower, but a GP7 only has 1500 horsepower.
@BadassDodgeRam3500 Hey Ass Hole GP9 1750 Horse Power GP7 1500 GP7 And 9 were Avilable with or With Out Dynamic Brakes Diffrent Engine To You Prick Go Screw Your Self You Ass
@BadassDodgeRam3500 this is a GP-9 this is not a GP-7 because if you look at this loco you will not see the 3 vents only the GP-7 had them and if you don't believe me go look it up before you start calling someone a dumbass

THAT..is what I called a " HARD PULL " and is on target with just a few " HARD PULLS " that I have see in Youtube when it comes too locomotives. Just type hard pulls and see what the other locomotives pulls match too and you'll see what I mean. This one is fairly short but it does the does the job.
man i grew up hearin that sound! i used to live down the road from a CN yard in St Thomas ontario and every day dad would bring me up to watch the GP9's shunting in the yard...ill never forget the day a brand spankin new DASH-9-44CW from Norfolk southern rolled in...i just about cried i was so happy ..any way you could get some NS footage?
@1jackdk i second that.. but i lik the 567b wine better.. like what ud find in an sw900 or a 567 c in an sw9 or a 567d1 in a GP18.. thats what i hear alot on the shortline near me house
@railfankasey the "whine" of a 567 doesn't really change between versions of the engine (567B, 567C etc.) since it's largely from the Roots blower. Even a Roots-blown 645 with the same number of cylinders is almost indistinguishable when running at the same rpm. What does make a difference in the sound is the number of cylinders, the max rpm and whether or not the engine is turbocharged - that's why you would hear a difference with SW units (8 or 12 cylinders instead of 16).
@arkie74 I love the GP-9's. My favorite. Love the whine they make when reved up and then back down. I suppose they all have been retired to museums and maybe a few short-lines. I like a 4-5 Geep lashup.
@gt3corn Thanks bud, glad you enjoy them. I don't let a few of those idiots bug me. After getting over a 1/4 million views, I figure there has to be a few that have nothing better to do. Most of the time I just keep their post up to show how stupid they really are. Take care, Jack...
In 1990, I ran my motorcar from Cochran to Sennetary Quebec. This was with the Motorcar Collectors of America(MCCA). We ran on the CN the 1st day. As for GP7's &9's, I grew up with them on C&O out of Muskegon Michigan.
I also grew up in Mass listening to these by the Boston & Maine line. I think it's this sound that turned me into a train lovin' kid. The sound is awesome, yet hauntingly scary! They should make a ride of this at Disney, just standing next to one as it winds up, to freak you out! (plus to smell the diesel :) ) Love the vid, don't ever lose it.
@moto11ed Thanks, Glad you enjoyed the video. It is a fantastic sound. And your right about the smells. You got to experience it close up. Take care, Jack
when a crew is switching cars in an out, they release them then go to another track for another string of cars. That is refered to as kicking cars. There has been a lot of dispute of this locomotive being a model EMD GP7. It just makes it clear that this is a newer unit, classified as a GP9. Hope this helps, and thansk for watching. Take care, Jack...
Actually, "Kicking" is when a loco pushes a cut of cars. The brakeman lifts the uncoupling lever, the loco brakes are applied , the car uncouples and coasts to another track while the loco works another cut of cars. This just like a "Hump yard" with no "hill". It saves time by not having the loco go all over the yard. GP9's are general purpose locos, but were designed as "Road locomotives". So they "load" slower than a Switcher. Plus the gearing is different than a switcher
@43m1garand Yep your right...cool part is I got to ride a lot on the GP7 and 9's they used to have at dover. Now they have 16's and a genset switcher down their. The GP16 still has a nice sound because I watched it start from a dead stop with its train. Got to ride on 9003 a lot....They kept those babies up to par too....the engine in this vid is nothing like what rj had/has.
There ain't no doubt about it. Check out my video on the Utah Rwy. The SD40's are working their hearts out on Soldier Summit. Thanks for watching. Jackmp294
hey, a short line near me called the caney fork and western has some GP9s or GP7s and i might be going down to find them today, i got invited inside of one when i was 3, but the loudness scared me
Thanks for looking, and I do have more somewhere of them switching at night fron the second story window of the station, but I need to find them. I got to disagree with all Ontario is English. When we road the Algoma Central, we stayed at Hurst Ont., they all spoke French up there...
Jack, the entire corridor from Longlac to Hearst to Cochrane to Iroquois Falls to New Liskeard is all bilingual. This section of North Eastern Ontario is actually mostly french. Every town up here has a french school
If you like it, spend a night in the Cochrane station hotel (upstairs, room overlooking the yard. They give you plenty of switching noise till late at night...
WQW! Growing up we lived one block from the old C N W yards in South Omaha. I spent many a summer day watching the grew kick cars and making trains with the old GP9s. From that point on my life was set..........
i grew up watchin ole Chessie painted Geep 38s and rusted ole smoke'in Alcos kick cars around in Montgomery. Boy the memories from back in the day. All of us railfan's lives were set upon watchin out first train do its work.
that fellow cranks that geep just as I remember back in it's hayday. Just to get it to move they'd crank it up several notches. If you found yourself salivating that would be normal.
This was a mainline locomotive when I was in the service in the late fifties. The C&O used six in a lash up as common power on their coal drags. 'ROOTS BLOWER' is still in business by the way.
how old is this video? I noticed that the engine doesn't have ditch lights. It is because this video was taken before the law or is it because Canada has different laws regarding safety lights?
What does the Gp9 have, D27 or D37 traction motors? I read somewhere that you could plug the motors and reverse the locomotive with throttle, without the indepentants set, correct me if I am wrong. Basically, it was real difficult to overload the motors
Encore lol. Awsome I never really heard a GP-9 all we have down here is GP-38-2s and MP-15s. How many GP-9s remain on the railroad you just recorded from?
the only ones that got chopped down were 1600 and 1604. probably around 1990. the rest are still high hood right now. but the ONR is trying to get rid of these old beauties..
check out my video of the same locomotive at a railway crossing. its entitled ontario northland like all my other videos but its at dusk. you wont miss it.

@DrAlco
Back in the day, Im pretty sure that IOCC (Iron Ore Company of Canada) Use to use them. Now they replaced them with Dash-9's And SD-40's.

That is a classic sound indeed ! That must be the Roots type blowers that make the whine right? that is the only type of whining I can tolerate !!

Beautiful sound. So bad we don't have such kickass enginesounds here in Europe.
rotekatze 2 years ago
I totaly agree, it's a very good thing that we in Slovenia have EMD diesels. European locos are piece of rubbish.
1ales1 2 years ago 4
yeah, european trains are freaking quiet compared to this thing, and its only a GP9! and dont even get me started on how wierd european horns sound!
rockguitarist946 2 years ago
how often do those train run?

Great video and sound, more please! All of Ontario is English. Just love the First Gen Diesels'. Thanks.
kendallscottxo 2 years ago
Thanks for looking, and I do have more somewhere of them switching at night fron the second story window of the station, but I need to find them. I got to disagree with all Ontario is English. When we road the Algoma Central, we stayed at Hurst Ont., they all spoke French up there...
1jackdk 2 years ago
i also road the algoma to Hearst.. very nice scenic ride
CharlieX90 2 years ago
Jack, the entire corridor from Longlac to Hearst to Cochrane to Iroquois Falls to New Liskeard is all bilingual. This section of North Eastern Ontario is actually mostly french. Every town up here has a french school
trainguyONR 2 years ago
Yes, They do speak French in Hurst. I was there on a Narcoa Motorcar trip. The signs are written in French first with English underneath.

All of us railfan's lives were set upon watchin out first train do its work.

thats cool I grew up seeing the geeps running on the Mo Pac and the old MKT including the GP9s both railroads ran through my hometown
gaycowboy31 2 years ago
MMM!! Reminds me of watching them switch down at RJ Corman in dover. They had a GP9 and GP7 for sure, but I forget what else.
CAVSFAN2360 2 years ago
wow thats loud
Railfan88 2 years ago
that fellow cranks that geep just as I remember back in it's hayday. Just to get it to move they'd crank it up several notches. If you found yourself salivating that would be normal.

This was a mainline locomotive when I was in the service in the late fifties. The C&O used six in a lash up as common power on their coal drags. 'ROOTS BLOWER' is still in business by the way.
Check it out.

Great sound and locomotive's. The ONR's GP-9 has a different shape then CPR's. I see CPR GP-9's everyday and they look way different.

how old is this video? I noticed that the engine doesn't have ditch lights. It is because this video was taken before the law or is it because Canada has different laws regarding safety lights?
diburning 2 years ago
its used in switching and in canda its not law yet but in feburary 2009 the law became that all units have to have ditchlights.

I love he threw over those last seconds.... Those older traction motors I feel are better quality than the junk of today.
trkerkenny82 2 years ago 3
I'm confused. Today's traction motors are "junk".
Don't get me wrong, I still use a lot of the older power and if the electrical has been updated they are amazing machines.
But so are the new ones. I just don't see significant problems with new traction motors.
Boss302fan 2 years ago
What does the Gp9 have, D27 or D37 traction motors? I read somewhere that you could plug the motors and reverse the locomotive with throttle, without the indepentants set, correct me if I am wrong. Basically, it was real difficult to overload the motors
clank4001 2 years ago
The ones I have in service here are D37's. However, with locomotives that old you see some strange configurations at times.
Boss302fan 2 years ago
Encore lol. Awsome I never really heard a GP-9 all we have down here is GP-38-2s and MP-15s. How many GP-9s remain on the railroad you just recorded from?

ontario northland currently has 6 gp9's,
#1600 to 1605.
1600 and 1604 are low nose.
trainguyONR 2 years ago
when did they chopp the noses down?
iggyjill 2 years ago
the only ones that got chopped down were 1600 and 1604. probably around 1990. the rest are still high hood right now. but the ONR is trying to get rid of these old beauties..
trainguyONR 2 years ago
It's about a 1000 miles north of the US\CANADA border at Niagara falls
cparl 2 years ago
How far north is that? Such low lighting makes it look cold up there. Would have liked to have heard the horn sound, but a cool video nonetheless.
dasmikey1964 3 years ago
check out my video of the same locomotive at a railway crossing. its entitled ontario northland like all my other videos but its at dusk. you wont miss it.
