Originally, "As Time Goes By", but there was already a song with that name (1931- composer Herman Hupfeld), so they pulled out the word "time" and substituted "tears". Kind of changes the whole thing, doesn't it?

A pretty good first songwriting attempt, don't you agree? The Stones were amazing then, & are STILL amazing today. Nobody can ever tell me they've been together all these years, giving us all this incredible music, just for the money. It's for the love of music & the need to create. And in spite of their fights, spats & arguments they've had over the years (like most families do, at least my family!) it's for the love they have for each other & the brotherhood of being the fucking STONES, man.

The result was initially named “As Time Goes By” the title of the song Dooley Wilson sings in the film Casablanca. It was Oldham who changed “Time” for “Tears". Oldham subsequently gave the ballad (a format that the Stones were not yet known for) to Faithfull, then 17, for her to record as a B-side

Andrew Loog Oldham locked Jagger and Richards in a kitchen forcing them to write a song together, even suggesting what type of song he wanted: “I want a song with brick walls all around it, high windows and no sex.”
