I have a release series Xd and with the lowering springs in performs much better in the handling area than a stocker. As for horsepower- you do need the ponies to get up and pass sometimes, or just be forced to follow. A cold air intake, header and exhaust will really add some punch to the Xd and even boost the fuel mileage. Plus boost the fun quotient. Enjoy!
The XD IS based on the yaris platform not the Corolla. There is nothing sporty about the scion XD. 128 hp yet you even dare to mention performance. Notice how the if you install all the TRD crap the XD is actually slower with the 18 inch wheels. Please kids dont rice out your scion XD.

Honda does disappoint in their continued insistence on holding out desired safety features like traction control for 'top of the line' models.
I am waiting to get a look at the upcoming Ford Fiesta, as well as perhaps the VW Polo and Mazda 2 before I decide, though between these two I'd take the Fit.
i never heard of scion seen the ninja star sign before so now i know the name but what im wondering is just is that car reliable cause alot of car offer close to the same crap and reliability would make the choice easy
The Scion XD is an adorable car, it reminds me of a Boston Terrier, which also happens to be my favorite kind of dog. Sure it's not a Rottweiler or a Pit Bull, but it's sturdy and reliable. It's got great fuel economy and I wouldn't want to not have ESC. It is very comfortable for me. It's probably better for short people. I happen to be 5'3". It's too practical and affordable as an every-day driver to dismiss.
i bought a costume scion with TRD springs and body kit and i must say i have no regrets in my purchase. All i need now is aftermarket exhaust, cold air intake, soft shocks and a strut bar and it will be a ride i will never want to get out.
Again the car manufacturer are selling cars with Horse power figure. Get real people, it does matter if these cars do 30 seconds on a 1/4 miles. It is designed for heavy traffic and fuel economy. No reason to argue about brand either because if it is good, it doesn't matter what it is labeled. Looks though are individual preferences, it is not wrong or right which one you like.
I used to drive a Honda and they make great engines along with transmissions. Hands down, VTEC beats VVTi but unlike Toyota, Honda cannot build a stable electrical system to feed it. Honda's were great before 2000 when they didn't add all the sensors and computer chips. I strongly urge you to read NHTSA consumer complaints for the '08 - '09 Fit models before you buy. They were mostly electrical problems from airbag deployment, daytime running lights, engine restarts, cold restarts.
For those complaining about the 3000 markup, its because you bought the Fit Sport with all the accessories. I bought the Fit Base model for only 16,000 range (drive out price).

hmmm. I'm pretty sure an Accord can't get to 65 mph in 4 car lengths (unless it's already going 60 :D). Maybe a $100,000+ sports car could, but definitely not an Accord. :)
Of course, the only problem I ever have merging onto major highways in Dallas is others in front of me not merging fast enough, and I drive a 94 Civic Dx which doesn't have any more power than a Fit. Even with slow mergers in front of me, I've just dropped it into second and have always been fine switching into fast lanes.
i've been a honda guy for a while (9 years), but when i went to buy a fit in december '08 capital city honda added 3000 bucks to the sticker! and they wouldn't budge, even with almost half down. i walked through the showroom, across their lot, and into the Toyota of Olympia showroom. i bought the XD a week after my test drive, and have been happy ever since.
as a side note don't buy the factory armrest. it's goofy as hell.
no car with a torsion beam rear end is going to handle especially well. i've got trd springs, rear sway bar, and sticky 17's, on my XD, and it does surprisingly well. you want handling? get an Evo or a cooper s, or an si , or something along those lines.
both the fit and the XD are very good at what they were designed for. i just think it's shitty that honda lets their dealers gouge customers with up to $3000 markups.
True, the torsion beam doesn't really make me confident in it's handling potential, but right off the dealer lot I think the fit holds the upper hand. I test drove the XD and did not like the throttle, nor the steering. Both seemed disconnected(I am spoiled in my old drive-by-cable subaru). The fit is more spacious due to the torsion beam which is, at the moment, my main concern. I can make up for the torsion beam in other ways, but I just can't fix dead steering and an odd throttle.
i too hate drive-by-wire, and the steering is twichy and disconnected. on a positive note, with TRD springs, struts, sway bar, and strut tower brace, and some fairly sticky 17's on decently light TSW trackstars, it does do a decent job going around corners. the TRD quickshifter and weighted knob helps immensly in the shifting department.

Blitz came out with a drive-by-wire signal speeder-upper, and hopefully will soon have one for the XD. until then, i'm screwed.
I would say the Fit is better. You can put a few mods on the Fit to make up for the power deficit. It is better in all other senses. I sat in both and the xD feels cheap while the Honda is actually pretty nice. Handling was much better in the Fit. Electronic brake assist? Come on Scion, that ruins the driving experience. My Subaru is drive-by-cable throttle(gas pedal and throttle are directly connected by a cable, not electronically controlled) and I turned of ABS all together.

i just got the 09 xD, and havent regret it.. just have it lowered and some set of wheels and your good.if its manual and know when to shift gears for "speeding", then your car will run pretty fast for a 128hp car.. but the fit sport is nice aswell
Fit is better looking if you have a sense of style. The xD looks like it's made from Fisher Price or Playskool. Inexpensive doesn't have to sacrifice good looks. It looks like a PowerWheels for a toddler.
fyi, its the scion dat look like a box! and if ur eyes are really working and ur not seeing thru ur arse, you'll realise that its the fit/jazz dats on the race track not the scion. i own a fit/jazz and its modified so heavy dat i (NA) can beat higher cc'ed cars.
It depends what you really want/need. IMHO, the XD looks better and i like the extra horsepower, however, i greatly appreciate the extra cargo space in the Fit. So ask yourself what's more important to you before buying. Hope this helps. :-)

same car just different name in different countries. Has been sold in US for 2 years. Just bought one a few weeks ago and no issues except doesn't have center armrest. A local Honda dealer sells an aftermarket one for $119 so I have purchased one. Have been getting around 33 mpg.
I'd rather pay the $600 extra and get a better stereo system and a better engine.
The Fit doesn't have any competing models within the Honda line up. The xD has to compete in sales with its siblings, the Yaris hatch and the Yaris sedan.
Add all 3 together and they'll drown the fit in sales.

Your'e right, the Fit does look dorky. But the Fit has more headroom than the xD (I couldn't stick my 6'3" self into any of Toyota/Scion hatches except the xB). The Fit has a better transmission than the xD, and the engine/xmission combo is what matters.
You could aslo think that no one has it because its ugly! Fit is more stylish and has more aftermarket parts which add a whole new dimension to the fit that the xD cannot compete with...
Diesel costs a lot $5 a gallon. Honda should look back to the old body styles. The 70's 80's 90's. Only good thing honda has right now are the engines. honda should redisign the civic, fit, accord.
I am not a big fan of diesel, or the internal combustion engine for that matter; but, if one has to choose with MPG being equal, isn't it better being in a mid-size car better than a sub-compact?
A corolla with an auto tranny also gets 35 MPG. The point is for a sub-compact the MPG should be higher. Instead of bringing the Fit to America, they should bring the european Accord with the diesel engine over. Better MPG, more power, and it would also be a little safer since America is the land of V-8 SUV's.
They European Accord is already here. (Acura TSX).
Accord will get the Diesel for 2009 but the Mileage isn't that great and the costs are higher when you consider the premium for the engine and the fact that Diesel costs more.

Hardulf, I too had owned a honda, its was an okay car, definitely coming in third to any Toyota product I've ever owned, and only broke down 4 times. My Scion Xd has yielded, in pure city driving a minimum of 30, with mixed highway/city driving Ive got as high as 42 mpg...but that was the best. Normal highway/city driving averaged between 36-40 depending on traffic. All this plus it's masculine. I bought a honda fit for my 6 year old daughter to play & carry her dolls around in the backyard.
Great. Now your daughter is using the better of the two cars to play with while you get crappy gas mileage and look like a tool in a fat car. Thumbs up for you, moron.

The Fit, properly named, and short for (Epilepdic Seizure), also looks like a car having an Epilepdic Seizure...truly an ugly yet feminine girlie car. I drove one of those Fits, and when I looked up "slow" in the dictionary, there was a picture of a Honda Fit. Sorry, but I also took the Scion xD for a test drive, and could not believe the difference in horsepower. The Scion will flat out blow the "Seizure" off the road. Also, the seats in the Seizure looked as if they were out of a comic book.
I test drove both these cars. The Scion came in far behind for me. It has much less room in the interior, gas mileage is not as good, it's ugly, low safety rating, etc. HP was not a factor since I couldn't care less how fast I can get to 60mph. I was looking for great gas mileage.
So I bought myself the better of the two: the Honda Fit. Nothing against Toyota, but I think Honda makes a better overall auto. I've owned both and have had less trouble overall with Hondas.

I respectfully disagree. True, it is all about opinion and we can see from how widely those range on this comment board. I feel the XD is trying too hard to become that Ford Mustang or Lincoln Navigator. Its looks are just to over sized. The front end alone says it all with the big "I've arrived so everybody look at me" type grille. The Honda is perfect for a college student because of that loading capacity. Yes, the power is a bit latte style. But if you're hurting there, you can get a turbo.

fyi, its the scion dat look like a box! and if ur eyes are really working and ur not seeing thru ur arse, you'll realise that its the fit/jazz dats on the race track not the scion. i own a fit/jazz and its modified so heavy dat i (NA) can beat higher cc'ed cars.

It depends what you really want/need. IMHO, the XD looks better and i like the extra horsepower, however, i greatly appreciate the extra cargo space in the Fit. So ask yourself what's more important to you before buying. Hope this helps. :-)

same car just different name in different countries. Has been sold in US for 2 years. Just bought one a few weeks ago and no issues except doesn't have center armrest. A local Honda dealer sells an aftermarket one for $119 so I have purchased one. Have been getting around 33 mpg.

I'd rather pay the $600 extra and get a better stereo system and a better engine.
The Fit doesn't have any competing models within the Honda line up. The xD has to compete in sales with its siblings, the Yaris hatch and the Yaris sedan.
Add all 3 together and they'll drown the fit in sales.
I'd rather have a modern styled hatchback than a mini minivan.

Your'e right, the Fit does look dorky. But the Fit has more headroom than the xD (I couldn't stick my 6'3" self into any of Toyota/Scion hatches except the xB). The Fit has a better transmission than the xD, and the engine/xmission combo is what matters.

A base Scion xD costs $600 more than a base fit.
The xD has 6 speaker stereo w/mp3 playback and iPod control capability (not just a stupid audio jack).
xD also has a bigger engine that kicks the Fit's ass and it only gets 1mpg LESS than the Fit. 1 mpg is hardly noticeable.
Winner = xD
Loser = Fit

A corolla with an auto tranny also gets 35 MPG. The point is for a sub-compact the MPG should be higher. Instead of bringing the Fit to America, they should bring the european Accord with the diesel engine over. Better MPG, more power, and it would also be a little safer since America is the land of V-8 SUV's.

They European Accord is already here. (Acura TSX).
Accord will get the Diesel for 2009 but the Mileage isn't that great and the costs are higher when you consider the premium for the engine and the fact that Diesel costs more.

Hardulf, I too had owned a honda, its was an okay car, definitely coming in third to any Toyota product I've ever owned, and only broke down 4 times. My Scion Xd has yielded, in pure city driving a minimum of 30, with mixed highway/city driving Ive got as high as 42 mpg...but that was the best. Normal highway/city driving averaged between 36-40 depending on traffic. All this plus it's masculine. I bought a honda fit for my 6 year old daughter to play & carry her dolls around in the backyard.

The Fit, properly named, and short for (Epilepdic Seizure), also looks like a car having an Epilepdic Seizure...truly an ugly yet feminine girlie car. I drove one of those Fits, and when I looked up "slow" in the dictionary, there was a picture of a Honda Fit. Sorry, but I also took the Scion xD for a test drive, and could not believe the difference in horsepower. The Scion will flat out blow the "Seizure" off the road. Also, the seats in the Seizure looked as if they were out of a comic book.

Right now I'm averaging 34.5mpg with both street and highway driving in my 'seizure'. The xd will never match that.

I test drove both these cars. The Scion came in far behind for me. It has much less room in the interior, gas mileage is not as good, it's ugly, low safety rating, etc. HP was not a factor since I couldn't care less how fast I can get to 60mph. I was looking for great gas mileage.
So I bought myself the better of the two: the Honda Fit. Nothing against Toyota, but I think Honda makes a better overall auto. I've owned both and have had less trouble overall with Hondas.

I respectfully disagree. True, it is all about opinion and we can see from how widely those range on this comment board. I feel the XD is trying too hard to become that Ford Mustang or Lincoln Navigator. Its looks are just to over sized. The front end alone says it all with the big "I've arrived so everybody look at me" type grille. The Honda is perfect for a college student because of that loading capacity. Yes, the power is a bit latte style. But if you're hurting there, you can get a turbo.
