Imagine my surprise when in Sept. '08 I received a call to go to the Hocking County Prosecutors Office. We did not walk in there listen to their story and walk out convinced that after 26 years Dale Johnston was not guilty. We had lots of questions. We were met by: Representatives from the Ohio Attorney Generals Office, Deputies of the Sherriffs Dept. (new deputies) Sherriff North, prosecutor, and private detectives. These people had put in a lot of time and energy to make sure they had facts.
here's the thing everyone thought, well these two guys linscott and other guy, siad they did it, okay well now they say they did'nt. Why did they say they did? And second your right you can't prove that dale johnston did do it, but also can you prove that he did'nt ? No some police officers messed up with evidence and thats why he's out, the investigation did'nt go as it should of and that's why he's not on death row anymore. knowone can prove he did now or that he did'nt.

5. Kenneth Linscott called the police one day before the bodies were found asking if they had found them yet. He was also spotted walking along the river near where the bodies were.

7. Linscott's wife said he came home that evening with blood all over him and a badly cut hand.
8. In 1983 abd 1984, the police used hypnosis on a witness to "enhance" his memory. After that the discription changed to match that of Johnston.
9. The "boot" expert was discredited and even the FBI said they couldn't use her.
10. And last, check this out any way you can. Dale Johnston NEVER admitted, and it was never proved that he touched his step daughter in an inappropriate way. - If you want to prove me wrong, go ahead. You won't find it.

McKnight admits to it. Linscott admits he was in the cornfield that night. Johnston admitted on the stand that he had a sexual relationship with Annette. No, McKnight and Linscott did not change their stories and deny doing it. And Dale denies to this day sexually assaulting Annette. So either he was lying on the stand then (purgery) or he's lying now.
Either way it's all over with now and I, like most people, are ready to put this behind us since there is really nothing more that can be done about any of it. The people responsible for Todd and Annette's death are either behind bars or have served their time. And Dale has a new life and a new wife and family. This isn't Hollywood, but that's a good enough ending that I think we can all let it rest in piece.

When they reexamined the evidence, referring to the witness that saw someone pull a female into the car, it turns out that was a different female and NOT Annette. So that merely served to confuse the original investigators along with Johnston being uncooperative to hide his molesting of Annette.

Officer Smith is one of the school resource officers. It's his primary duty to deal with juvenile delinquents. If you'd behave yourself and stay out of trouble you'd realize he's a pretty good guy who cares a lot about the kids in Logan.

Having said that, I apologize if my words have offended. I would like to see healing of this wound for everyone. My heart breaks when I think of what the victim's families have gone through. They did not deserve it. But I think Dale Johnston was also mistreated by the process. This has been a tragedy for all.
Mowerey said Johnston denied have a sexual realtion with Annete, but admited-over Tyack's objection that it was irrelevent-that he did get aroused at times when Annette was there and he was nude.
Mowery testified that at first Johnston said he just acted normal, but revealed under further questioning that if he was aroused when Annette was around "he had to take care of it right away."
"Mrs. Johnston, who was accompanied by her attorney Herman Carson , was asked by Mong ,"Do you recall telling Dale you didn't care if he raped her every day of teh week. I just want my baby back."
teh defense's objection was overruled and Mrs. Johnston said that she made that statement to Dale on Oct 5 while talking to him in the parking lot behind Dr. Milton Mason's office, where the witness was employed.
I know this is hard for you, but you shouldn't accept everything you have been told by authorities trying to satisfy a blood-thirsty mob. I have checked the court records. The admitted misdeeds of Johnston have been twisted, exaggerated and in some cases invented. The misdeeds of authorities cannot be justified by saying "he must have been guilty of something"

People with your mind-set were convinced that Johnston was guilty of murder only to find out they were wrong. It is just as possible that you are wrong about the other crimes as well. Contrary to earlier posts, he never admitted to any of this. They were merely accusations from people trying to frame him. At any rate, guilt can only come with a fair trial and conviction. Until then, he is innocent. The real horror in Hocking County is the mind-set that would kill an innocent man.
Check the original court records - he admitted in court he had "inappropriate contact" with the girl. And when he was arrested he had photos in his wallet of Annette nude - check the police records - ALL TRUE! This case is not about Dale Johnston. His actions placed him in a light of suspicion, those actions also took resources that could have been investigating other leads. He does hold some responsibility for his becoming a suspect.
Part 1 I would be interested in learning why Gilford61 has such an interest in having the "people of Hocking County" declare Johnston innocent. If someone else is charged and convicted what more do you want and why? After all Dale Johnston is not an innocent party - he is guilty of a crime, its just not murder. It was by his actions of trying to cover his crime (child molestation) that he drew the attention of the authorities the first time. I think he needs to accept some of the responsibility.

Today (12/18/08) Chester McKnight plead guilty to these murders.There was a plea agreement to added 20 years to life with no parole possibility until 2037.
I sat and listened to the victim impact statements from Don Schultz, his sons, and from the Coopers. It is obvious that they believe McKnight is guilty. That means Dale Johnston is not.
It is time that the people of Logan admit that Dale Johnston was wrongfully convicted.
Sheriff North admitted that for years he thought Johnston was guilty. Now he believes that McKnight and Linscott are the ones. I am sure that it took more than a questionable confession to change his mind. As you said, there is always more evidence than the public knows about.

You must remember that all evidence is not reported. Not all evidence can be used due to procedures of law. What the news media reported at that time was for sensationalism, not the real facts that should have been reported. What the police, lawyers and judges know are sometimes never made public. This case was mishandled do to a power play between Sheriff Jones and Chief Barron. No one wanted the case. Jim Thompson an inexperienced, untrained investigator handled the investigation.

He just got off due to technicalities. He was NOT found not guilty. The prosecutors, Mong and Viedt refused to re-try the case. I have read up on this case. I currently cannot make any direct comments in regards to it though. However I will say that Dale did have an inappropriate sexual relationship with Annette. He deserved a punishment for that.

My grandfather James E Stilwell sentanced Dale Johnston to death for this crime. It has now come out that two other men have been arrested for the murders. I do not apologize on behalf of my grandfather for this, Mr. Johnston admitted to molesting his daughters during the trial and as for as im concerned Mr. Johnston deserved the electric chair for just that (I think my grandfather would agree.)

Dale Johnston has always maintained his innocence. He wife and other step daughter have supported him through out the whole ordeal. They know the facts a lot more than you do.

Fact: Chester McKnight was NOT in jail in October 1982.
McKnight tried to confess to the murder of a man at a roadside rest in Athens but was in jail at that time and could not have committed that crime.

4. Even the Shultz family concedes that Johnston is NOT guilty of murder.
5. Kenneth Linscott called the police one day before the bodies were found asking if they had found them yet. He was also spotted walking along the river near where the bodies were.

6. Kenneth Linscott admitted to the police that the murder victims "might" have been in his house the day they disappeared. And that he "might" have been in the cornfield with them.
7. Linscott's wife said he came home that evening with blood all over him and a badly cut hand.
8. In 1983 abd 1984, the police used hypnosis on a witness to "enhance" his memory. After that the discription changed to match that of Johnston.

McKnight admits to it. Linscott admits he was in the cornfield that night. Johnston admitted on the stand that he had a sexual relationship with Annette. No, McKnight and Linscott did not change their stories and deny doing it. And Dale denies to this day sexually assaulting Annette. So either he was lying on the stand then (purgery) or he's lying now.

Either way it's all over with now and I, like most people, are ready to put this behind us since there is really nothing more that can be done about any of it. The people responsible for Todd and Annette's death are either behind bars or have served their time. And Dale has a new life and a new wife and family. This isn't Hollywood, but that's a good enough ending that I think we can all let it rest in piece.

I was there and I know most of the people involved. I have noticed that over the years the story keeps growing about what Dale Johnston did. Next, they'll say he was the 2nd gunman with the JFK killing.
You shouldn't just repeat what you've heard. Stick to the facts you know are true.
Here is a fact. A lot of people thought Dale Johnston was guilty of murder. They nearly killed him. They were very wrong.

When they reexamined the evidence, referring to the witness that saw someone pull a female into the car, it turns out that was a different female and NOT Annette. So that merely served to confuse the original investigators along with Johnston being uncooperative to hide his molesting of Annette.

Interesting. Not really a change of heart, but a softening perhaps.
The hard reality is that the whole community of Hocking County was hoodwinked by a law enforcement officer that wanted all the focus on one man. He ignored any evidence that lead in another direction. Why? Hopefully, time will tell.
I am sure the judges were under a lot of public pressure to convict. But there was no excuse for the way law enforcement conducted this case.

Officer Smith is one of the school resource officers. It's his primary duty to deal with juvenile delinquents. If you'd behave yourself and stay out of trouble you'd realize he's a pretty good guy who cares a lot about the kids in Logan.

Most criminals start out somewhere. Few criminals start out as serial killers. If you have a problem with a law, don't blame the officer. His job is to enforce the laws, not make them. You don't blame the walmart employee for the company forcing their suppliers to have to send jobs overseas to get costs down do you? You don't blame the cashier when your purchase is expensive. Yes, I have read this and much more. Bad as it is, it doesn't prove what is being accepted as fact in these posts.
Having said that, I apologize if my words have offended. I would like to see healing of this wound for everyone. My heart breaks when I think of what the victim's families have gone through. They did not deserve it. But I think Dale Johnston was also mistreated by the process. This has been a tragedy for all.

Mowerey said Johnston denied have a sexual realtion with Annete, but admited-over Tyack's objection that it was irrelevent-that he did get aroused at times when Annette was there and he was nude.
Mowery testified that at first Johnston said he just acted normal, but revealed under further questioning that if he was aroused when Annette was around "he had to take care of it right away."

"Mrs. Johnston, who was accompanied by her attorney Herman Carson , was asked by Mong ,"Do you recall telling Dale you didn't care if he raped her every day of teh week. I just want my baby back."
teh defense's objection was overruled and Mrs. Johnston said that she made that statement to Dale on Oct 5 while talking to him in the parking lot behind Dr. Milton Mason's office, where the witness was employed.

I know this is hard for you, but you shouldn't accept everything you have been told by authorities trying to satisfy a blood-thirsty mob. I have checked the court records. The admitted misdeeds of Johnston have been twisted, exaggerated and in some cases invented. The misdeeds of authorities cannot be justified by saying "he must have been guilty of something"
It sounds like a 3rd world nation when we lose the presumption of innocence.

People with your mind-set were convinced that Johnston was guilty of murder only to find out they were wrong. It is just as possible that you are wrong about the other crimes as well. Contrary to earlier posts, he never admitted to any of this. They were merely accusations from people trying to frame him. At any rate, guilt can only come with a fair trial and conviction. Until then, he is innocent. The real horror in Hocking County is the mind-set that would kill an innocent man.

Check the original court records - he admitted in court he had "inappropriate contact" with the girl. And when he was arrested he had photos in his wallet of Annette nude - check the police records - ALL TRUE! This case is not about Dale Johnston. His actions placed him in a light of suspicion, those actions also took resources that could have been investigating other leads. He does hold some responsibility for his becoming a suspect.

Part 1 I would be interested in learning why Gilford61 has such an interest in having the "people of Hocking County" declare Johnston innocent. If someone else is charged and convicted what more do you want and why? After all Dale Johnston is not an innocent party - he is guilty of a crime, its just not murder. It was by his actions of trying to cover his crime (child molestation) that he drew the attention of the authorities the first time. I think he needs to accept some of the responsibility.

Part 2 Johnston, lied, destroyed evidence and mislead investigators. His actions drew attention to him and away from other facts and evidence - he also had motive, means and opportunity. Dale Johnston may not have killed Todd Schultz and Annette Cooper, but he was guilty of another crime. Its time for him to move on, stop playing the victim and leave this alone. Today (12/18/08) Chester McKnight plead guilty to these murders.There was a plea agreement to added 20 years to life with no parole possibility until 2037.
I sat and listened to the victim impact statements from Don Schultz, his sons, and from the Coopers. It is obvious that they believe McKnight is guilty. That means Dale Johnston is not.
It is time that the people of Logan admit that Dale Johnston was wrongfully convicted.

Sheriff North admitted that for years he thought Johnston was guilty. Now he believes that McKnight and Linscott are the ones. I am sure that it took more than a questionable confession to change his mind. As you said, there is always more evidence than the public knows about.

You must remember that all evidence is not reported. Not all evidence can be used due to procedures of law. What the news media reported at that time was for sensationalism, not the real facts that should have been reported. What the police, lawyers and judges know are sometimes never made public. This case was mishandled do to a power play between Sheriff Jones and Chief Barron. No one wanted the case. Jim Thompson an inexperienced, untrained investigator handled the investigation.

Mr Stillwell. I knew your grandfather, very well. I probably know you, but I see you are 19 according to your profile. I was an officer on the PD during that time. Johnston is guilty as hell. He just got off due to technicalities. He was NOT found not guilty. The prosecutors, Mong and Viedt refused to re-try the case. These two claiming they did it are liars and want fame cause he is dying. I grew up and lived as an adult on the Hilltop with your family on Warner. I lived this, not just read it.

Everything I have said here was public record. A agent with BCI & I made all these facts known in court of record. It was very embarrassing to everyone. This was a VERY heinous crime. It was an absolute nightmare. I would love to see this case get solved, but with facts and evidence, not simply on an idiots confession.

I especially like how people have been commenting on the "definite" guilt of Mr. Johnston, now that two other men have been brought forth--one of them with a confession. People need to learn to not speak on things they don't know---truly the only people who know what happened are those who were there. Maybe we should all respect all involved in this awful and horrific crime, and hope that whoever could do something this terrible will be punished in the end, and that the two victims can RIP.

I would urge all who were related to or associated with Todd and Annette to stop for a moment and give pause for a kind rememberance of the friend, family or loved one that they were in life. Well my mother was Annette's cousin..she was actually supposed to be at there house that night! So yes..I do know about this case! And yes...Dale Johnston's butt should have done time for his sexual misconducts! But fact of the matter is..he was on trial for murder..he was not guilty of murder..so therefor..his name is cleared of any wrongdoing no matter what else he had done...let them put him on trial for sexual misconducts..until them...he's NOT guilty.

My father was actually good friends with both Todd and Annette, however, I am not using that fact to prove what I do or do not know about the case, because that would be simply ignorant. I have seen my father hurt by this situation, and it was a terrible thing, but just because you see friends/family hurting doesn't mean you can just point fingers whereever you please. Grow up.

My grandfather James E Stilwell sentanced Dale Johnston to death for this crime. It has now come out that two other men have been arrested for the murders. I do not apologize on behalf of my grandfather for this, Mr. Johnston admitted to molesting his daughters during the trial and as for as im concerned Mr. Johnston deserved the electric chair for just that (I think my grandfather would agree.)

Wow.. indeed. There was no cult. 3 Judges looked at the evidence and found him guilty. Even when he sued the state they said no, because a "reasonable jury would have found him guilty." Dale is an admitted pedophile and child rapist. He admitted to having sex with Annette (his stepdaughter) while she was living with him.
