Damage is caused by free radicals being produced in brain cells leading to oxidative stress leading to the damage of cellular molecules leading to nerve cell axon damage/loss. This doesn't happen except in regular (multiple times a month) users. Even then, cognitive impairment is only seen after around 50% of said axons in the serotonergic system are damaged.
