  • great vid and tips! gonna order mine soon!

  • thumbs upped before i even watched. just for your choice of camera, and for the effort you put into this

  • Grrrrrrrrr at toy cam

  • Its called Landscape not Mountains people!

  • man, this guy handles that holga like a boss.

  • loved it :P i really wanna get one!

  • i can't wait to start using mine.. this will be a break from my digital camera for sure :)

  • How do you go to the next shot from 1 and then go to the second shot?

  • @wowingaga I bought the Holga TLR from Lomo, thinking of getting the Diana Mini for my wife. It kind of comes from the thought of that we usually want to eat similar foods, but can't decide between 2. I get one & she gets the other, and we share :D

When in doubt, google photo sites that classify what camera they were taken with.

Like the lomo site, and 4 corners dark I think do this

  • I'm choosing between this one and a diana mini. I can't decide!!

  • Why worry about changing the print size on the back plate when you've removed the mask anyway? Don't make no difference.

  • @NewYorkChelsea I was thinking the same thing.

  • This was actually helpful, I bought a white one yesterday off of eBay and I have been debating whether to use the mask or not. I got the 120 CFN. But I thought part of the fun with Holgas were the light leaks. I won't be taping mine up.

  • This guy is Holga purist, that's pure bullshitt say to throw the lens cap and the masks out. Cuz it's so wrong, the lens cap it's there for a reason and so the masks.

But as a friend of mine once said: "it's your camera, you do whatever you want!"

  • It's amazing what shite people will post on youtube!! Anybody want a demonstration of how to make toast??

  • would you suggest covering up the film counter window to avoid light leaks?

    -1st time holga

  • hi..I can't see exactly which "2 holes" you are referring to when you remove the lens mask.

I can't see what/where the 2 holes are! Please help!

  • So can you upload these to the internet? And its a TOY?!!

  • h0w do you know when you're shooting 12 photo's or 16 photo's?

  • hi your video is really greaton the holga 120 camera bt i was wondering wha the affect from 0:54-0:56 and is there anyway to get that affect with a different camera like smena 8m

  • The 1st tip is to remove the lens cap or the plastic lens?

  • ma quanto è bello quando lancia via la cornice?

how much cool is him trowing the frame away..?

  • in got my holga for $80 :/ it came with a book.. but that was too much right?

  • @twilytey depends where you live... in canada thats about right, since after shipping and duties I paid more than that for my first holga.

  • @twilytey that was the starter kit. not too bad a choice cause the books good isnt it :)

  • thank you for the video is of really great help!!!

  • great video! thank you so much for sharing!

  • Wonderful educational advice on using a Holga

    Thank you Peter!

    :)

  • Invaluable info for a new Holga convert like myself.

    Nice job Peter

    :)

  • these thing is my baby! god! i love holga! unfortunately, the 120mm film roll is not cheap.

  • you can buy a holga camera designed to use 35mm film, or you can modify your existing Holga to use 35mm. If it's the former, get the Holga 135.

  • Can I get the same vignette effects on a DIana mini camera?

  • Dan Gurnay

  • Luichee7 ; ill be travelling to hltye Philippines in august , you can have mine. I have a few of these cameras in my collection .

  • @weerpool14 w0w... (for free?! haha) well how much will you sell it for me?... here in the philippines a HOLGA 135bc cost 67.59 dollars., and in philippine money its... expensive., haha!

  • why is it so expensive here in the philippines., hahaha., how can i order from freestyle., without paypal or bank account?

  • Usefull, to-the-point and with a healthy dose of Holga-Humor. (Ever heard about Hasselblad-Humour? Neither did I.)

  • just love your tips... blessings from chile

  • This is great, one of the best Holga how-to videos out there. A little much tape for my taste, I usually just tape the film-scratching edges, and the back cover so it doesn't fall off (the metal clamps are really poor, you shouldn't rely on them). Thanks for the vid!

  • i love it how they throw EVERYTHING around.

  • nice video, i live in SC also and i was thinking about getting a holga but im just dont know any place that develops 120mm film, ive been using digital for years

  • reminds me of Vincent the shamwow and slapomatic guy

  • 2:45 - dont do this if you've got the holga cfn 120 because they already have foam strips in the film chamber to make in secure

  • will getting rid of the mask decrease the exposures per role or expose in the frames of other negatives?

  • For B&W I tape the back, but for color film, I really love the red light leaks and the frame numbers getting reflected onto the film.

Try inserting creative frames inside your holga, at the same spot where the plastic frame was.

  • hahaha the first tip is to "remove the lens cap" jesus christ

  • i think he meant get rid of it all together

  • This was very useful! Thanks!

  • i love how he just tosses the mask away. he really does not want it.

  • hey thanks man very helpful and informative.

  • NICE CATCH

  • That's actually a very good video,very helpful.

    I like.

  • thats good actualey like send me a message if you know any other good tips for like when u do that things so u can like have two different phtos in one lol im such an ameteur

  • to have a double exposure all you have to do is take one photo as per usual and then instead of winding the film on, take another picture.

  • LOL @ 1:35 Reminds me of the shamwow guy.

  • cool; thanks

  • Yes, well done for for posting this. I bought a Holga about a month ago after a lifetime of ownig some pretty elite cameras and I love it.

  • some one gave me a holga 120 GCFN and I seriously have no clue how to use it, this helped me a bit but if any one out there can give me some more tips I would really appreciated :)

  • huh?

  • Super Video - Hits all the basics of Holga technology...so to speak. Thanks for posting.

  • got my 1st Holga 120 CFN this past spring....loving the medium format film....been using black/white film...

  • This video was really interesting and helpful. Thanks a lot for posting.

  • but if you remove the mask, can you choose 16? cos then won't the light leak too much?

  • very nice video, i've been thinking about getting into lomography for awhile now

  • so, i left the flash on in my holga and as a result it's shot.

is there nothing i can do to get it fixed?

  • i have a question, is this camera good for lomo beginners like me?

  • Any lomo camera is great! diana, holga etc.

  • yes

  • i love the holga... but getting film is a pain in the butt. and i still havent figured out where to develop it yet...

  • get a 35mm adapter and just use 35 and develop it at walgreens and stuff. but dont go to walgreens they fucked up one of my rolls the other day -_-

  • yeah..finding a place that develops 120 film is a hassle, and thats even if you CAN find a roll of 120 film!! you can always get the 35mm adaptor.but its gonna cost ya.

and thats why i got the holga 135BC.but the 120 film hassle is all worth it once you get that roll developed :)

  • Any good camera store should be able to do it. they may need to send it out but it'll get done. It can be pricey though.

  • you can get the 35mm adapter

  • I WANT THAT 400TMAX COLOR-SLIDE FILM, MAN!! where can i get those? there's none in any studios in my country, oh please.. and holga cant take 35mm one its just mess up wif the photos that had been taken, but still holga looks fresh always <3

  • My god...

The guy throws the camera to him.

    Jeez. It's a camera, not a toy.

    Aha :)

  • :) Heeyyyy- O

  • @DippedInDope Yeah a plastic camera :L

  • @DippedInDope it's a Holga :P Definitely a toy. Cheap too

  • @DippedInDope Ya, he is a bit rough with the camera???

  • @DippedInDope It's both. It's a toycamera!

  • @DippedInDope it is a toy camera :P

  • @DippedInDope teeeechnically it is a toy

  • @DippedInDope It's a toy camera, so you're half wrong ;]

  • @DippedInDope LOL *toy* camera ;)

  • have a question I axsidently broke a small part in the camera where you insert the film(not the part where you reel the film=its on the left of it, holds the film in place) It can still take up film put Im afraid it will damage the film let alone the camera any suggestions?

  • i want to buy a good and cheap film camera do u strongly recommend Holga??

  • YES! i strongly recommend a holga. except, a lot of places don't develop 120 film so i recommend the 35mm adapter.

  • I am using Fugicolor Pro 400... not too expensive where I bought it. You can also do a 35mm mod and use any 35mm film.

  • not necessarily, it's pretty hard to get used to and is quite unforgiving for the beginner. i would go for a fully manual camera, you can learn at lot more, and then if you want to get a holga in the future you will be more prepared and have a better knowledge of manual photography.

  • ya or canon ae1

  • @iSMENiqqUH The camera is cheap, but the film sure isn't. Especially developing, printing, and scanning.

  • @iSMENiqqUH Buy a used 35mm SLR from the 60's-80's off of eBay. It'll only be $10-20 more, and you'll get amazing images, incredible versatility, and maximum creative control. But then again, if you would prefer a Holga, then obviously, go with that.

  • thank you! this was very helpful. i just bought a Holga today, and i'm so excited. what types of color film do you recommend for the Holga?

  • Comment removed

  • I bought mine today but is there a video were it shows to put back the mask thing or put a new one in?

  • Oh the holga is wonderful with it's light leaks and all... then he goes and covers them up. I don't get it. FROM THE HIP!

  • shoot from the hip!! not from the eye:P

  • Damn Holga purists! Throw away your lens cap??? WTF!

Taking of the mask? It isn't necessary, but it's an option.

  • Great Vid!

  • lol. I like how everything is thrown at him. I love holga

  • does it work without the masks?

  • Thank you! That was very helpful to me.

  • everything your missing in your modern digital camera BAHAHAHAHAAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!! that's why we love it :D

  • wow freestyle , awesome ! :D i should have known i payed what hmmm, 50 more bucks for an attached flash, wow, so lame ,

    lol

  • i love those things. i have one

  • youre really good at ll this!! keep posting!! GOD BLESS

  • Great video!

  • 감사해요 :-)

  • je comprend rien ! en français ça donne quoi ?

  • Great vid!

  • Has anyone ever braved a Holga N120 as your main camera during a wedding shoot? If so, any comments. I just bought my first holga and I am considering using a Holga instead of my digital camera. I would like to try something different for a change.

  • I would recommend both. I'm sure the bride and groom would be thrilled with the mysteriousness and originality of the Holga pictures, but i would definately shoot with your digital too. That way you at least have back up! But i definately say go for it!

  • you're welcome. i hope they help.

  • Good tips , Thanks

  • Good stuff - I'll pass this along to all my newsletter subscribers.

  • nice ive been looking for some tips like this. been interested in getting a holga for a while now

  • thnks for the modification tips..

  • I liked that. Never heard of the Holga before today. Seems like you can get some very unique images!

  • Well done Peter -- I've been shooting with a Holga CFN120 for a few months now (on 35mm film exclusively since that's all my scanner can handle, not 120 negs) and love it!

  • wow thanks! that was pretty useful.

  • i just ordered my holga! thanks for the tips!

  • Hey, great video! I have a dumb question... I set the camera up like you did for 12 exposures. So when I see number 13-16 on the back of the film in the red window, I should just wind the film up and get it processed? I'm confused as to how I can't get 16 exposures. Thanks.

  • Thank for the great tips! :D

  • i love the spontaneity of this video,

    it made me laugh :)

"lets get rid of this mask..."

    *throws mask aside*

    great video!

    clean, short and

easy mods to do with the Holga.

    +-- don't think, just shoot!

  • that is GEH-TOE

  • waaaaaaaay too much tape for my taste

  • same here

it looks like it´s had an accident

  • Great way to bring contemporary art to classic vintage equipment!!!

  • well ill go ahead & check it out because i really am interstead in getting one of these cameras for myself.

  • i know this might sound like a dumb question but how do you get holga pics like uploaded to a computer?do you get your pictures printed on a a disk ?

  • a couple of ways

    1. scan your negatives if you have a photo scanner

    2. have it printed out and just scan the picture

or 3. go to your local processing place that will do 120 film and see if they'll put the pictures on a disc, usually they will

    :]

  • what is lomograpghy?

  • It's the style of photos taken by a 'cheap' lomo film camera. It's similar to the Holga camera shown here but it's smaller and takes 35 mm film. They were produced in the Soviet Union in the in the 80's and 90's. Think they have been remade in recent years.

  • i NEED to get me one of these.

  • You say you tape up the edges so that it wont scratch the film...but the film doesn't run against the edges anyway becuase of the square window...right?

  • when you ditch the film frame, it leaves a sharp plastic edge. does that make sense? let me know if you have further questions. happy holga-ing.

  • no need for all the tape!

I only use extra tape when I shoot 35 through it, cause it doesn't have the paper backing

  • I recently picked up a 120N, myself. Oddly enough, I learned more about this camera before I purchased it than when I paid $200+ for my digital camera.

  • I want a holga

  • Thanks a lot for the video

    viva la holga

  • thank you so much for posting this! i just ordered my first holga online and you just answered several questions that are difficult to understand from just reading on forums :) you've been really helpful, thank you!!

  • Peter! Its Tony P, I just ordered a Holga and was on here trying to figure it out....But now I know who to harass for advice.......

  • Thanks a lot, just got me a Holga

  • Has anybody (a mad person) Managed to fit a digi back to one of those lenses?

  • i got a holga and used 35mm. i took it to get developed and there were no pics!! i taped everything and unloaded in pitch dark. that is the second spool its happened to. am i doing something wrong. can i get my 35mm developed at an hour shop or is it best to take it somewhere else.

  • the same thing happened to me, I used all the tips I read and saw on videos but none worked, I'm just going to use 120mm from now on, I just hope the tape I used to tape up the red square didn't ruin it.

  • It could have just been an issue of film speed being too high or too low. Or there could have been a hidden light leak that wasn't patched up.

  • A couple more things. The Holga only really has one aperture setting, due to a design flaw, and that's about f11. So if you were compensating for the cloudy aperture setting (which is the one that doesn't work), then you might have been over-compensating.

Also, the film might not have been held properly in place, due to a lack of a pressure plate on the back cover of the camera (on top of not being made to take 35mm).

And of course, there's always forgetting to remove the lens cap, hehe.

  • peter! your hot!

  • peter is rad.

    this video is ace!

  • Peter, thanks for the GREAT holga tutorial---definitely some good tricks and tips. :)

  • Nice video! I know it will be very useful to me soon. :)I'm shopping for a Holga at the moment (i'm totally new to lomography and holga) and have been checking out starter packages that include filters, angles, and the like. What camera model would you recommend a beginner buy?

  • personally, in my own opinion, i'd get the holga cfn since it has a flash and different color lenses for the flash, but if your gonna use your own flash set up i'd get the holga "n" hope that helped :]

  • Thank you! What is your favorite film to use in the Holga?

  • i like using kodak t-max 400 film buttttt i also like using ilford film and sometimes if i'm feeling like photographing in color i go with fuji pro.

i'd go check out squarefrog(dot)co(dot)uk because when i was starting this was the site that helped me out the most pretty much.

  • Really helpful advice, thanks.Have you any experience of the Lomo?Which is better,Lomo or Holga?(By better,I mean which gives the quirkiest pictures?)I'm going to buy one or the other!

  • me personally i havent used my holga in a long time when i got my lomo. but its also partly that its hard to find a place in my area to develop 120 film so the lomo just has that convenience factor for me. but quirky goes to holga. i guess? lol.

  • Where do you develop 120

    ?

  • most labs can probly do it. If you shoot slides they might send it out unless they do E-6

  • great vid! but i cant find the number one?

  • Hey, man. Thanks for posting this. I just bought my Holga and it should be arriving in a few days.

  • Just taped my camera up, we'll see what happens! Thanks for the video Peter :}

  • cool video. I have different feelings on ditching the lens cap though, afterll each Holga has it's own characteristics anyways. Just because it's made cheaply shouldn't mean that you have to treat it like it is.

  • Thanks for this. My wife just got a Holga and this was very helpful!

  • Really useful video thanks. You can get 120mm from lots of websites and the occasional shop - i think it costs a fare amount to develope, a couple quid more than 35mm... worth it though!

  • where do you geet your 120mm film? how much does it cost to develope?

    thanks

  • I don't know if they have Ritz Camera in Canada but if you go there they might be able to do it. Just ask around at camera shops in your area, one of them is bound to develop it, they also might have to send it to another location.

  • wow. i hadn't heard of a holga before..

    they seem real fun lol

  • Thanks, that was incredibly helpful!

  • No maltrates asi la Holga!!!

  • good tutorial for holga newbies :)

    mark-b

  • FlushedDown, you're kidding, right?

    I can't believe I'm responding...

The Holga is a film camera. You know, that stuff that people used before everything went digital. If you want to get the photos onto your computer just scan them. Now I don't have to explain what a scanner is, do I?

  • hey jmignea2, if you scan your photos its quality will suck.

flusheddown, you can ask your lab person to put it into a cd. then you can see which ones are really good and develop them later.

  • Hey at least he was more help than the guy that told him about the amazing technilogical advances in the Philippines. haha, and some places like Black's (where they use the same machines as many other labs) can't transfer 120 film to cd. So maybe he didn't know. The quality will suck if your scanner sucks as well. In yo face sucka!!! hahahahaha

  • props

  • i really want a Holga, but how do you get the pictures from the camera and into the computer?

  • Here in the Philippines, there are photo developing centers that give you the option of printing your pictures to a CD :)

  • Hey thanks,
