Hank Paulson (Bush's treasury secretary) lied to us therefore let's not trust government ever again? What kind of logic is that? You are either dumb, dishonest or both.
@rurikbird Either that or he has an opinion that differs from yours and therefore he's a racist or something. Because, y'know, he doesn't approve of a black man's policies. Also he hates Jews, right?
South Park is an extremely funny show that has evolved into a satire about current events.
Regarding Paulson, yes he lied. Also the banks that got the TARP money are profiting from speculation in the financial and derivatives markets and not from lending.
During the 1930's banks lending fell as a percentage to its deposits. Most banks had govt treasury bonds/notes as assets.
TARP and other measures to prop banks have not increased lending to even businesses with good credit!
Read the Constitution and you will see if gives the Congress the authority to regulate certain things and create executive organizations to enact, support and enforce laws (ie FCC, FBI, FTC, etc.)
How do you know if an entity is independent? How can you know without transparency? I can tell you there a few independent sources of information left, so it's important to protect the ones we have.
The FCC regulating blog reviews is purely for consumer protection. People reading reviews have a right to know if the reviewer was paid or given gifts. Conservative outlets have been headlining this as if gov't was trying to jimmy another slimy finger into the free press. On the contrary, this is gov't actually serving a positive purpose and protecting people from corporations and the undue influence of incentives.
You're biting on the bogus headlines, read the bill. This consumer protection law enforced by the FCC, not Constitutional law. Blog content is not being regulated, rather they're requiring disclosure of compensation received by the author.
Don't you want to know if the guy writing a review was paid by the manufacturer of the product? This only affects blogs with product reviews.
Hank Paulson cannot declare that banks are unhealthy because it is a self-fulfilling prophecy: saying the banks are unhealthy results in a run on the banks which makes the banks unhealthy.
The administration is making many many errors, but this one is not really that big a deal.
The banks are unhealthy no matter what anyone says. The entire banking system is 100% inherently bankrupt. Its the least healthy you could possibly be. The sooner the entire population realizes this the better.
That is just sad that kids can't have bake sales. That is the least of the problems compared to the fast food industry. They're the ones who are making kids fat, not a twice a year bake sale.
Many states in the usa have banned bakes sales due to the alarming amount of crystal meth residue that has been found in baked goods because of parents cooking meth
I agree with you, but I do feel that the FTC is right in this. This is a good way to protect consumers, because bloggers have become reliable sources to some people. If their opinion is being paid for, the consumer should know that.
Many economist's ascribe to Milton Friedman's monetarist view of the causes of the great depression. In this view the main cause of the great depression was the contraction of the money supply. Although this doesn't justify the stimulus it does justify pumping large amounts of money into the economy in order to increase liquidity. Lee, how would you have kept the money supply from collapsing? It seems to me the Fed needed to do more than just keep interest rates low.
Considering the government has pumped trillions of dollars into the economy and it hasn't yet caused inflation (money supply = inflation is a longer term phenomenon) and not increasing liquidity could have caused greater economic contraction. Just my two cents.
Of course the media and "real people" have no right to give their uneducated, uninformed opinions on climate change because they are uneducated (in science) and uninformed. Like the guy that mentions the black plague or the lady that says "we're part of the environment too." Even the quotes in the trailer are dumb, imagine how fantastic the rest of the movie will be. You'll probably claim we didn't put a hole in the ozone too, right? Leave the science to the scientists
And the guy that claims that he thinks it is a good idea for the planet to heat up? seriously? can you really watch that and agree with this guy? Ice is the enemy of life? That's a fantastically ignorant and wholly incorrect statement... and it's in the trailer. and who are the "scientists"? the science is there, the consensus amongst scientists are real. people are just dumb and are afraid to take accountability and change their lifestyles
and that best part is, the people that are going to figure out alternative energy sources and methods of reducing atmospheric pollutants are the people you're parading against... in the end, you'll just have to accept the new technology and adjust your life in a way that you will barely notice... and all of the campaigning against climate change initiatives will be a waste of time, but not as big of a waste as the past 8 years of us sitting on our hands
Nobody has any complaints about alternative energy or reduction of atmospheric pollution., so long as it works, and is sustainable.
Policies such as the proposed "cap and trade" bullshit are not sustainable. All that will lead to is outsourcing of even more industry to third world countries that don't have an EPA, and don't give a shit about polluting their cities.
Slightly warmer temperatures are, indeed, a good thing. Or at least, they're a good thing for mankind. The impact on certain other species might well be negative, but who cares? Extinction is a natural process.
A larger temperate region and longer growing seasons means more food for a growing world population. That's not necessarily a bad thing.
Indeed. Leave the science to the scientists, not the politicians wishing to implement fascist policies directly affecting industry and business.
"Global warming" is hyperbole. It's psuedo-science. it's trash.
There are legitimate reasons to research alternative energy and cut back on pollution, but the nonexistent demon of man-made global warming is not one of them.
I am not a supporter of the current cap and trade plan.
Saying slightly warmer temperatures is a good thing is ignorant, especially when you follow it saying that extinction is a natural process. People can adapt, but a sudden increase in temperature, even a degree or two on average, will have significant implications to the ecosystem we are apart of. You're just proof of how selfish people are and oblivious to the fact that we are part of a whole.
Increasing temperatures will have devastating effects on the polar regions, which in turn has an effect on the ocean levels.. and that is just one of the major effects. And I don't know why you think that an increase in temperature will lead to a lush world wide landscape of farm land. That isn't so. Our population is already too large, trying to sustain an even larger population in 30 years will be even more difficult.
My question to you is: what are the legitimate reasons to cut back on pollution? Do you agree that CO2 and CH4 and CFCs have affects in the atmosphere? You have to, I mean, look at the ozone. Do you agree that we are the result of millions-billions of tons of emissions of these gases?
Yes, leave the science to the scientists... the overwhelming majority who understand climate change (or "global warming"). it is not psuedo-science. obviously, you don't know what psuedo-science is.
Just because you see politicians saying it is bullshit doesn't mean that is what the majority of scientists say. So, if an overwhelming percentage of qualified scientists are in agreement, then what is your position? its ok to not be stubborn, go research actual peer reviewed literature, and make an informed decision.
I see scientists being paid by pollutions to reach an already-determined conclusion on global warming. I see scientists relying on computer models to make predictions, rather than actual empirical evidence to make conclusions.
Both sides on the debate claim to have the scientists to back them up.
CO2 is a naturally-occurring gas that is essential for life. Regulating CO2 emissions just sounds ridiculous to me.
The legitimate reasons to cut back on pollution include the serious negative effects it has on public health and agriculture. Those are reason enough to reduce pollutants. We don't have to rely on scare tactic psuedo-science.
you see scientists being paid by "pollutions"? Knowledge of climate change has been known about for several decades, this isn't a new thing. And where do you see scientists being paid by "pollutions"? Being that you are not part of the scientific community and have no knowledge of grant writing and scientific funding you probably shouldn't make general and untrue statements. Scientists aren't being paid to reach a predetermined conclusion... that isn't how science as a whole works
CO2 is a naturally occuring gas that is essential for life. regulating it emissions is ridiculous to you because you are entering into an argument with out understanding that chemistry occurs in the atmosphere and CO2 plays a part in that chemistry. Increasing concentrations affects that chemistry, just as methane does. I can name a ton of naturally occuring compounds that are essential for life that will kill you if you take in too much or have too much exposure.
I can find a "scientist" to say anything for the right amount. There are scientists that don't accept evolution. But these people are typically not qualified and in the minority. Just because someone is a scientist doesnt mean they are able to provide insight outside of their expertise. A Ph.D in physical chemistry studying quantum physics probably can't explain molecular biology, biochemistry, or, say, atmospheric chemistry
And when I say "I can find a "scientist" to say anything for the right amount" I mean those scientists that would forego academic integrity for a pay day. Unlike politicians, that is not common. If you knew the egos of most of these scientists you would understand why, but there are always those that want their 15 minutes of fame.
And anything that affects our global ecosystem and drives extinction and dramatic environmental changes is not good for our species. You have a brain, go use it
You also realize that scientists use computer models all the time in every field, right? Computer models are used to identify potential enzyme inhibitors for drug design, either modeling kinetics or substrate binding. So, computer models are not only acceptable, they are necessary
I'm not knocking the use of computer models entirely. But when the entire argument of global warming is based on a computer model, and you have advocates for this particular theory on record as saying that there might be natural variations which seem to contradict global warming, but those variations are due to natural cycles, so we're going to use the models and ignore the collected data...
Sorry, sometimes I think faster than I type. I meant to say "politicians".
And yes, scientists are paid by politicians to reach a predetermined conclusion. Or, at least, they have an incentive to reach the conclusion that results in the most funding for their organization or university.
Nope, scientists are not paid by politicians. And they will not do anything to reach a "predetermined" conclusion. First, even if they were able to get the results they were paid for, then those results would have to make it through the peer review process... then the scrutiny of the scientific community. A scientist that has a published paper retracted loses a lot of respect. A scientist that fudges their results will be ruined. You're watching too much TV. Seriously
Well when it comes to Fast food in France, if they find McD's so horrid with a deux Hamburger Royal avec Formage aka double quarter pounder with cheese, they can always goto the Quick that is down the Street If My memory serves(66 Rue Rivoli), that is a Local French owned competitor, and they got a nice special sauce that likely includes Mayo as the french do in everything see Bruce Willis in "the whole nine yards" for confirmation
HowTheWorldWorks is a Republican Party GOP Spammer. The title of the video is Hank Paulson, but he only mentions him in the beginning, then goes onto to typical Republican Party/Dittohead bullshit.
HowTheWorldWorks is some sort of intern for Dick Armey, Newt Gingrich, and the rest of the GOP beltway fags. These people have nothing to do with regular, "conservative" people that vote Republican.
This is some rich jew fag that got hooked up with some GOP front group, a low rent Glenn Beck.
A McDonald's at the Louvre?! Hoohah!! American Capitalism Rules!!!!
The FCC must be eradicated or it will kill free speech in this country.
To quote the great Pink Floyd, "HEY! TEACHER! LEAVE THOSE KIDS ALONE!"
Who gives a @#$! about fat-ass Charles Barkley! His brain is being eaten away by cholesterol and the fat around his head. I can't prove this, but Paulson is a member of the international guild seeking the destruction of America to bring about a one world gov't. Maybe.
Who decides the reviews are fake? Frankly I'd urge reviewers to disclose how they received the products they review, but if the do not disclose it eventually it will become known that they are shilling for products based on how they receive them in the first place. The FTC wading into this pool says to me that they're going to need a lot more staff to police this cause. Users on the Internet can do a better job for far less money.
Right now, just the consumer unfortionately. I very rarely read any 5 star ratings, just assuming they are all fake, and just pay attention to the gramatically incorrect ones and one stars. Seems more real to me. Some one stars i believe may be the competitors comments, those to are disregarded. Still, most consumers (ie my inlaws) are not this savvy and a often believe the false statements made. Gov aint all bad, they cleaned up most spam and telemarkets
"Gov aint all bad, they cleaned up most spam and telemarkets"
Both were based on strategies developed in the private sector. What needed wider adoption was greater exposure by the private interests. They could have done more by stressing the costs of spam working with ISPs.
I'm confident the user based community can police itself much better than the government.
It's not a quarter pounder of cheese in France...its a Royal with cheese. They're on the metric system. An no, I didn't know that until the first time I saw Pulp Fiction. Anyway, I see nothing wrong with the Louvre having a McDonald's in there...simple notion of supply and demand.
I think it's great the FTC is issuing fines. That is, to me, part of the governments role. It's good for capitalism and consumers when they decide to buy things based on others reviews of the products, and fake reviews undermine that system. If the government really wanted to enhance it's role in promoting the general welfare of the market, they would beef up the BBB and make a centralized online review customers could use to rate everything that comes with a printed reciept.
I don't buy the global warming scam by a long shot but I just took a look at the trailer for the Just Wrong Not Evil movie and my advice is to stay far away from it and not try to promote it.
If that trailer is a fair representation of the movie, then it is going to be an embarrassment to the anti global warming hysteria crowd. We can do a lot better than that in my opinion.
The ftc thing is just another way like the fcc czar thing to intimidate free speech. Oh and that dirt bag u mentioned Lee that says those who disagreee with Obama r racist. Let me just say that idiot obama shill who's saying that is racist to whites and all faiths. Oh and as usual Obama ur stilll a racist noob. Carter, mondale, cosby, and the others who cried racist r racist. So sit down noobs & enjoy mercy flush 2010/2012.
Ughhhh, I no longer want to hear bad news because me as an individual can not do anything about it, and its all depressing. Fuck it, ignorance is bless.
It's a royal with cheese in France but it is slightly different style burger than here. The McDonalds in North America are much better than the ones in Europe. Although I still would have enjoyed a big mac in the Tuleries last time I was there on Bastille Day.
seriously, if BO and crew DO decide to investigate folks like me for any reason, I will have to prob give up the cupcakes. Now the naps are gonna be a different situation.(Getting more than name, rank and serial number may be a problem for them. I can't remember on lots of days any way!!)
hey,did you know there is a real South Park in Colorado? It's an ENORMOUS valley that I came upon whilst cresting a bend on an overlook, with ranch nearby. There were curious hummingbirds buzzing around, perching on the old barbed wire fence along the road. (Are you mad at me now?)( I am pretty old compared to many So Park viewers..I have had other things to worry about.) Raising a couple kids after being widowed.. the trashing of American liberties..when my next choc cupcakes+ naps are..
Lee. Please, during your next video could you please hold your clenched fists over your head and yell in a cheesy Russian accent 'YES! IAM INVINCIBLE!' you are the spitting image of Boris from the Bond movie Goldeneye. :-P
Does this mean I can still call you Cupcake? But not in New York? Now THAT hoits!
I propose that we all go picket the schools of NY at least on or around Hween dressed up in cupcake suits. Ok, I need my nap. Medical studies have shown that chocolate, real white sugar, and plenty of sleep are all really good for me after all.
What's even better than Barkley's miscalculation of Obama's spending is this gem: "Everybody is going crazy talking about his spending. It's so funny, he's not spending any more money than George Bush did, ***and there was not this hatred and animosity toward him.***"
There was less hatred and animosity towards GWB? This is a joke, right? There certainly seems to be some rejection of reality going on here.
Since Internet killed the public access t.v. star, the FCC is trying to lock down on the Internet in the same way they once did with T.V. -- on public access, you still had to obey certain broadcast rules despite saying whatever the heck you wanted. The guv is trying to apply the same rules to the net.
I think the FCC thinks bloggers have too much power, so they want to crack down on the people who get paid by companies that blog about them.
From a positive standpoint, they want to encourage bloggers to be honest and not be biased. EXAMPLE: if your paid by McDonalds and you blog about how good McDonalds is or how much Burger King, Arby's or Wendy's suck then you should tell people you are paid by McDonalds. It would cost viewers but if you spread false info it could keep people from lying.
What an incredibly naive take on the situation. I hope you are a teenager and not an adult, seriously. What you are suggesting is government work essentially as thought police. Weighing every bloggers comments would be a futile effort in the first place. But more importantly, morons have the right to be morons and express their moronic take all they like. You have to be a discerning individual and not take everything everyone says at face value. To sum up, question everything & think for yourslf
Truth in advertising, that is an old idea. So why is everyone upset here? Just slap a lable saying, the following is paid advertisement for ____ (insert fat injection facility name there).
I think the new Southpark episode is a followup to the one where the election was a plot to steal the hope diamond. And at the end they all were killed when the plane exploded and Ike was part of it.
On the FTC: Blogger's must disclose whether they were paid or not..
I think it's BS that they have to say whether they were paid or not.. or they get fined. Complete and utter BS. Mainly what ticks me off is the fine.
Of course that's just my perspective.
... But then again, I basically hate anything that's attached to the local, state, or federal government that claims I if I don't play by there rules I owe them money. So I am a bit biased.
The boys bring in professional ghost hunters to investigate evidence of paranormal activity in the Broflovski House. Powerful forces are tormenting Ike. He's freaked out and the stress could kill him. Kyle and the boys are doing everything they can to save him but the poltergeists won't leave Ike alone.
I heard about the blogger fines bullshit on NPR this morning after having gone to McDonald's (Bacon, egg, n cheese FTW). WTF is the FTC thinking? If they're going to punish anyone, it should be that horseshit salesman Kevin Trudeau and his insane books.
If I was against Bush, does that make me racist against white people, Charles Barkley?
As usual, good video. What do you think about the oil states and China not wanting to accept the US dollar? Kinda scares me. How do you think that'll work? We turn in our US cash and get fifty cents of the NWO currency on the dollar? I'm not an Economics major, but I know printing more money devalues currency. Stimulus my ass!
He actually said a football bat, and a hockey court.
It's a joke. It's like saying ... "this isn't rocket surgery".
The biggest problem with the current rate of spending is the coupled affect that the rate of money being "printed" will magnify the issue many times over.
You seem to love the idea of pissing people off by putting a McDonalds outside the Louvre. Do you think disregard should be shown for all historical and cultural aspects of society just so we can have McDonalds everywhere? The McDonalds outside the Pantheon in Rome is enough to make anyone who appreciates history sick. I mean they could at least make the advertising subtle. And are people who appreciate culture really elitists?
Your spending numbers in that ridiculous link are outdated. In fact the deficit has decreased since Obama has taken office. Not to mention the 2009 budget was that of George Bush...good job killer. You really need to check the credibility and validity of your sources before posting links. If you want the truth about what was stated in that link spend a little time researching (I'm not going to do it for you). But you are only spreading more dissension with links to misleading information. Sad.
God, Charles Barkley is such an idiot. Another black person always trying to make everything about race. Why is it people who are supposedly for racial equality are the ones always going on racism witch hunts and bringing up race? Chris Rock, Al Sharpton, Dave Chapel, etc. They remind you every second they can who's black and then tell you that's why they behave a certain way. THAT sounds like racism to me....
The reality is that the food public schools feed the children who attend them is processed to hell and nearly nutrition-less. It's awful. That they would ban cupcakes but serve garbage every day at lunch is typical of them.
HowTheWorldWorks Does a great job of getting the truth out,,,,but the bad news is!,,,,,most Americans wouldn't know what the truth was if it bit them on their sorry lazy butts. "This is the first time in my life that I an ashamed of my Country".
I like the Louvre, when I'm king of France i'm going to live there. There wont be any McDonalds there though so visitors will have to bring their own packed lunch and pay to eat it.
AND I DONT CARE NOW BECAUSE YOU TOLD ME THAT... I DONT LIKE YOU BECAUSE YOUR A DUMB FUCKIN ASS HOLE... YOU NEED TO HAVE YOUR VOICE BOX REMOVED... heeee XD
"See GWB was lying. He lies about everything. Obama never ever lied to us and he is trying to fix everything. He knows how bad the banks are and that's why he is giving the stimulus packages, just because he is trying to fix everything. GWB is a liar. But Obama is God."
Some conservatives thought that about Clinton and Bush. So here's a simple rule to all political ideologies, every president has lied during their administration. I don't see that changing anytime soon.
While I don't agree with Obama's spending habits, it is still to early to tell if this is a trend or if he's trying to respond to the economic crisis. Bush on the other continually tried to hide how Iraq and Afghan cost. Obama included the war costs in the budget for the first time.
Go see "Food Inc." and see how much you like your McDonalds cheeseburger and fries afterwards. The reason why so many people are fat and lazy is because all you free market libertarian right-wing Republicans from Kansas have been making arguments about how great it is that we subsidize the megacorp agricultural interests. That way, we can all get cheap food from Republican companies like McDonalds and Wendys which will make us stupid enough to listen to turds like Limbaugh and Hannity
OK, I have a place in my heart for principled libertarians although if it was up to them we'd be living next to lead smelters and nuclear reactors located in the center of town. I have little patience, however, with HTWW's brand of libertarianism. He gets all irate about any time the government proposes to spend a dime of the taxpayer's money. Yet, he's for the Iraq War and remains silent on a half-trillion dollar defense budget?!? Yeah, that's libertarian all right.
He didn't support the invasion of Iraq, but supports the going-on seven years of occupation as necessary to support stability in Iraq... whatever that means. Furthermore, he said he "doesn't have an opinion" when it comes to reducing the military budget. Doesn't have an opinion?!? About a half-trillion dollar budget and the biggest discretionary portion of the budget?! That's some libertarian!
What are you talking about? Ray Kroc and Dave Thomas were well-known Republicans. McDonald's has been criticized by environmentalists, animal-rights groups, public health advocates, etc. so it donates 90% of its lobbying money to Republicans so it can pollute the environment, engage in horrific animal husbandry practices, and feed us shitty food (literally, in some cases) that will probably give us diabetes or cancer by-and-by.
I don't know if you noticed, but every single corporation in this country is criticized by environmentalists, animal-rights groups, and public health advocates (at least in the food industry). Kind of funny as well that the Democrats have the majority in house, senate, and have a president in office so of course McDonalds can still be evil by lobbying with the minority group. Your a genius.
Alright, if you want to think like an idiot, then go ahead nobody's stopping you. But please get this right: Republicans are not "right-wing", the media categorizes them as so, but not on an accurate political spectrum, because then you'd be calling Republicans, anarchists.
Keep this in mind whenever you watch Michael Moore's "documentaries": Michael Moore is, in fact, a bona-fide capitalist.. He merely plays a communist on TV.
He's raking in the millions from dumbasses who actually manage to believe his tripe.
Who said a Marxist is constrained from making money in what ultimately is a capitalist society. I know where Michael Moore is coming from just as I know where Ron Paul is coming from. I'm able to listen to both without foaming at the mouth. I suspect that people like you aren't going to see Moore's film so my question is a.) why get on the backs of those of us who pony up the ten bucks to see his films and b.) if you haven't seen the movie than why are you complaining about it?
I love the capitalist argument against Moore, compelling point to highlight the apparent hypocrisy. Until you realize that it's more impressive that he's willing to attack the system he's benefitted off of, which would mean ushering in change would hurt him! Second to your point on tripe, Sicko is proving to be just that consider the most recent harvard polls shows a 60% approval to public option. Now wait 'till the conservative misinformation engine dies down.
Oh yes. Nothing beats American burgers. I'm totally in favor of McDonald's franchises being considered sovereign US territory, like consulates and embassies. It's a little piece of capitalism in every corner of the world.
I saw that article about Paulson on Reuters this morning, so I printed it out and brought it to my macroecon class. We were discussing various news items that day, so I brought this one up. And my professor more or less shrugged and said, "So?" These lying hypocritical thieves can do NOTHING that shocks us anymore. People EXPECT to be mistreated and abused by their government. Not a good sign.
Why does it matter they cant sell cupcakes? They can't vote either... Whoop dee doo... Also, yea kids are too fat, we need to start taxing fatty and sugary foods.
Fining bloggers? How is that any different than other forms of taxation, theft, and robbery?
Here's a social experiment, lets send out a copy of the Constitution to each person in the country, and those who can consent to it can sign their name, and those who don't can be left alone to trade amongst themselves, free from the tyranny of an oppressive majority. How many people would sign away their freedom? Hmm, sounds like a good poll.
The McDonald's is pretty well a non-issue at this point. There was already a Starbucks in the Louvre.

I wouldn't buy a cigar just because Rush says it's good and I wouldn't buy a motor oil because Richard Petty says it's good.
I'd go to some independent entity and decide for myself.
Isn't the gov't supposed to get its authority from the Constitution?

Many economist's ascribe to Milton Friedman's monetarist view of the causes of the great depression. In this view the main cause of the great depression was the contraction of the money supply. Although this doesn't justify the stimulus it does justify pumping large amounts of money into the economy in order to increase liquidity. Lee, how would you have kept the money supply from collapsing? It seems to me the Fed needed to do more than just keep interest rates low.
AHBritton 2 years ago

Leave the science to the scientists
johnnyphd 2 years ago
And the guy that claims that he thinks it is a good idea for the planet to heat up? seriously? can you really watch that and agree with this guy? Ice is the enemy of life? That's a fantastically ignorant and wholly incorrect statement... and it's in the trailer. and who are the "scientists"? the science is there, the consensus amongst scientists are real. people are just dumb and are afraid to take accountability and change their lifestyles
johnnyphd 2 years ago
and that best part is, the people that are going to figure out alternative energy sources and methods of reducing atmospheric pollutants are the people you're parading against... in the end, you'll just have to accept the new technology and adjust your life in a way that you will barely notice... and all of the campaigning against climate change initiatives will be a waste of time, but not as big of a waste as the past 8 years of us sitting on our hands
johnnyphd 2 years ago
Nobody has any complaints about alternative energy or reduction of atmospheric pollution., so long as it works, and is sustainable.
Policies such as the proposed "cap and trade" bullshit are not sustainable. All that will lead to is outsourcing of even more industry to third world countries that don't have an EPA, and don't give a shit about polluting their cities.
Sounds like a good idea! Where can I sign up?
Aardvark1878 2 years ago
Slightly warmer temperatures are, indeed, a good thing. Or at least, they're a good thing for mankind. The impact on certain other species might well be negative, but who cares? Extinction is a natural process.
A larger temperate region and longer growing seasons means more food for a growing world population. That's not necessarily a bad thing.
Aardvark1878 2 years ago
Aardvark1878 2 years ago
I am not a supporter of the current cap and trade plan.
Saying slightly warmer temperatures is a good thing is ignorant, especially when you follow it saying that extinction is a natural process. People can adapt, but a sudden increase in temperature, even a degree or two on average, will have significant implications to the ecosystem we are apart of. You're just proof of how selfish people are and oblivious to the fact that we are part of a whole.
johnnyphd 2 years ago
Increasing temperatures will have devastating effects on the polar regions, which in turn has an effect on the ocean levels.. and that is just one of the major effects. And I don't know why you think that an increase in temperature will lead to a lush world wide landscape of farm land. That isn't so. Our population is already too large, trying to sustain an even larger population in 30 years will be even more difficult.
johnnyphd 2 years ago
My question to you is: what are the legitimate reasons to cut back on pollution? Do you agree that CO2 and CH4 and CFCs have affects in the atmosphere? You have to, I mean, look at the ozone. Do you agree that we are the result of millions-billions of tons of emissions of these gases?
Yes, leave the science to the scientists... the overwhelming majority who understand climate change (or "global warming"). it is not psuedo-science. obviously, you don't know what psuedo-science is.
johnnyphd 2 years ago
Just because you see politicians saying it is bullshit doesn't mean that is what the majority of scientists say. So, if an overwhelming percentage of qualified scientists are in agreement, then what is your position? its ok to not be stubborn, go research actual peer reviewed literature, and make an informed decision.
Also, I am one of those scientists
johnnyphd 2 years ago
I see scientists being paid by pollutions to reach an already-determined conclusion on global warming. I see scientists relying on computer models to make predictions, rather than actual empirical evidence to make conclusions.
Both sides on the debate claim to have the scientists to back them up.
Aardvark1878 2 years ago
CO2 is a naturally-occurring gas that is essential for life. Regulating CO2 emissions just sounds ridiculous to me.
The legitimate reasons to cut back on pollution include the serious negative effects it has on public health and agriculture. Those are reason enough to reduce pollutants. We don't have to rely on scare tactic psuedo-science.
Aardvark1878 2 years ago
I didn't say it was a good thing overall, but I do believe it is a good thing for us as a species.
Aardvark1878 2 years ago
you see scientists being paid by "pollutions"? Knowledge of climate change has been known about for several decades, this isn't a new thing. And where do you see scientists being paid by "pollutions"? Being that you are not part of the scientific community and have no knowledge of grant writing and scientific funding you probably shouldn't make general and untrue statements. Scientists aren't being paid to reach a predetermined conclusion... that isn't how science as a whole works
johnnyphd 2 years ago
CO2 is a naturally occuring gas that is essential for life. regulating it emissions is ridiculous to you because you are entering into an argument with out understanding that chemistry occurs in the atmosphere and CO2 plays a part in that chemistry. Increasing concentrations affects that chemistry, just as methane does. I can name a ton of naturally occuring compounds that are essential for life that will kill you if you take in too much or have too much exposure.
johnnyphd 2 years ago
I can find a "scientist" to say anything for the right amount. There are scientists that don't accept evolution. But these people are typically not qualified and in the minority. Just because someone is a scientist doesnt mean they are able to provide insight outside of their expertise. A Ph.D in physical chemistry studying quantum physics probably can't explain molecular biology, biochemistry, or, say, atmospheric chemistry
johnnyphd 2 years ago
And when I say "I can find a "scientist" to say anything for the right amount" I mean those scientists that would forego academic integrity for a pay day. Unlike politicians, that is not common. If you knew the egos of most of these scientists you would understand why, but there are always those that want their 15 minutes of fame.
And anything that affects our global ecosystem and drives extinction and dramatic environmental changes is not good for our species. You have a brain, go use it
johnnyphd 2 years ago
You also realize that scientists use computer models all the time in every field, right? Computer models are used to identify potential enzyme inhibitors for drug design, either modeling kinetics or substrate binding. So, computer models are not only acceptable, they are necessary
johnnyphd 2 years ago
I'm not knocking the use of computer models entirely. But when the entire argument of global warming is based on a computer model, and you have advocates for this particular theory on record as saying that there might be natural variations which seem to contradict global warming, but those variations are due to natural cycles, so we're going to use the models and ignore the collected data...
Garbage in, garbage out.
Aardvark1878 2 years ago
Sorry, sometimes I think faster than I type. I meant to say "politicians".
And yes, scientists are paid by politicians to reach a predetermined conclusion. Or, at least, they have an incentive to reach the conclusion that results in the most funding for their organization or university.
Aardvark1878 2 years ago
Nope, scientists are not paid by politicians. And they will not do anything to reach a "predetermined" conclusion. First, even if they were able to get the results they were paid for, then those results would have to make it through the peer review process... then the scrutiny of the scientific community. A scientist that has a published paper retracted loses a lot of respect. A scientist that fudges their results will be ruined. You're watching too much TV. Seriously

"fake reviews undermine that system"
Who decides the reviews are fake? Frankly I'd urge reviewers to disclose how they received the products they review, but if the do not disclose it eventually it will become known that they are shilling for products based on how they receive them in the first place. The FTC wading into this pool says to me that they're going to need a lot more staff to police this cause. Users on the Internet can do a better job for far less money.
brennan59 2 years ago
"Who decides the reviews are fake?"
Gov aint all bad, they cleaned up most spam and telemarkets
scrappmutt2 2 years ago
I see your point.

CDubSD 2 years ago
I think it's great the FTC is issuing fines. That is, to me, part of the governments role. It's good for capitalism and consumers when they decide to buy things based on others reviews of the products, and fake reviews undermine that system. If the government really wanted to enhance it's role in promoting the general welfare of the market, they would beef up the BBB and make a centralized online review customers could use to rate everything that comes with a printed reciept.

Since Internet killed the public access t.v. star, the FCC is trying to lock down on the Internet in the same way they once did with T.V. -- on public access, you still had to obey certain broadcast rules despite saying whatever the heck you wanted. The guv is trying to apply the same rules to the net.
ShereKhanTiger 2 years ago 2
I think the FCC thinks bloggers have too much power, so they want to crack down on the people who get paid by companies that blog about them.
From a positive standpoint, they want to encourage bloggers to be honest and not be biased. EXAMPLE: if your paid by McDonalds and you blog about how good McDonalds is or how much Burger King, Arby's or Wendy's suck then you should tell people you are paid by McDonalds. It would cost viewers but if you spread false info it could keep people from lying.
StuffedAnimalAdvisor 2 years ago
What an incredibly naive take on the situation. I hope you are a teenager and not an adult, seriously. What you are suggesting is government work essentially as thought police.

What are you talking about? Ray Kroc and Dave Thomas were well-known Republicans. McDonald's has been criticized by environmentalists, animal-rights groups, public health advocates, etc. so it donates 90% of its lobbying money to Republicans so it can pollute the environment, engage in horrific animal husbandry practices, and feed us shitty food (literally, in some cases) that will probably give us diabetes or cancer by-and-by.
mullikrk 2 years ago
I don't know if you noticed, but every single corporation in this country is criticized by environmentalists, animal-rights groups, and public health advocates (at least in the food industry). Kind of funny as well that the Democrats have the majority in house, senate, and have a president in office so of course McDonalds can still be evil by lobbying with the minority group. Your a genius.
