This isnt as good as the closer IMO. I LOVE that last minute of the show where they blast the crowd away. And that hold chord in the line right before the finale is still ringing in my ears. LOVE IT!
I love how un-ostentatious that show is, especially for a 1st place winner. None of the handwringing and over-emoting broadway bullshit. Kind of old-school in that way.
i couldn't agree more!! truly a step back to the drum corp of yesterday. a group winning by the elements alone, without any cheesy commercialism, annoying narration or over played theatrics! certainly one of their best. thanks for the post!!
Yeah, totally. All that crappy fluff has turned drum corps into a insipid and homogenized shell of what it once was. I saw that phantom show in the movie theater when DCI was doing that countdown thing. I had not seen any show since 89 or 90 since I kind of lost interest, but man that show gave me chills. I LOVE that kick halt at the end of the closer. Talk about old school!
I didn't see them. Like I said, I pretty much tuned out. I'm sure there are some great shows every year but for me it's not worth picking through all the other dreck to get to it! The older stuff moves me, the new stuff doesn't, is what it boils down to. Of course I'm old so there you go.
1989 is Phantom Regiment's best score ever with a 98.1 I think, but it still didn't beat Santa Clara Vanguard's 98.4. Yes, 1996 was their only win, but they tied with the Blue Devils. For once, I'd like to see them win without a tie.
for those who don't know their music history, shostakovich was a russian composer. however, his music was under heavy scrutiny by then russian leader Stalin and his government who called his music "formalist." His music is known for its sharp contrasts and often drew inspiration from "elements of the grotesque." Great composer, and one of my favorites. That was a great show by Phantom. Check out the full show on google video. You won't be dissapointed.
you're right, i saw this show on the dallas stop in july 96....gave us all goosebumps. I felt them and there phantom had a real chance to finally win a championship
if they had been commies or nazis, dont you think the final formation wouldnt have been a triangle but a swastika or hammer and sickle? And agreed; best breathing line ever
This was a great show. Christy Spears is still the best conductor in the history of DCI.

I saw this show in Florida. Those horns were so powerful and clean. I swear they had to check the structure of the stadium after Phantom finished.

phantom marched black uniforms. i love it. but its not the phantom i know...

@71196jmg Phantom had a fire and a lot of their uniforms were damaged. That was why the marched in black in '96 and '97.

And?
I'm 16 and listen to nothing but classical. Everything else is crap to me.
Makes no difference. Look them up. Faust and Harmonic Journey.
