  • Everyone has their favourite LWT programme to remember this ident by, but mine will always be Play Your Cards Right :-)

  • Probably the best ITV regional ident ever. I grew up in London so I saw a lot of this one. Thanks for posting.

  • Now its time for Weekend World.....(not the Professionals, cos that was on Thursdays)

  • I love this, I feel like a kid again. What would I do without the YouTube time machine!?

  • @DoctorDoBuggerAll

Couldn't agree more. Thanks to god for YT.

Now I've seen the ident, I can settle down to The Professionals...Or...Hawaii 5 0...or...The Big Match.

    I wish...

  • how did it all become so souless & corporate as it is now?

  • @imcadam121 When ITV merged it all together. Bring back TVS lol!

  • Here here!! optimus57

  • I've never been to Britain, but this logo has been familiar to me from the production cards of Mind Your Language, probably one of LWT's and UK's biggest TV exports.

  • vibes, brass and timps.

  • who out there think that ITV should reigonal again

  • @gallafey I do! 100%!!!!

  • @gallafey agreed.

  • @gallafey Yes and the quality of programmes may inprove

  • you can use toothpaste to clean murky headlights on your car

  • Anybody know exactly when this indent ceased to be..?

  • Comment removed

  • toothpaste

  • @BarnacleGooseInvalid that's bloody brilliant. I am going to get some colgate right now and write LWT with it on the bathroom mirror

  • I think it's sad that ITV now put profit before quality TV, I would so love to see TV of this calibre come back to our screens but something tells me that it's not going to happen anytime soon!

  • seeing this again reminds me of a friday night as a kid. 6pm and the weekend had started. 2 days of fun with friends playing footie and good tv. everything seemed simpler then.

  • itv+1 LWT +1

  • Many thanks for the posting-and yes, the LWT and Thames idents are real classics-what a shame that nowadays it is the corporate ITV1 idents we have instead!

  • This meant the arrival of good telly on a Fri/sat night during the 70's

  • @fictionuk Yes ............The Goodies . Great Comedy from a decade now sadly gone.

  • That was memory rocking to watch. Thoroughly missed.

  • Oh my GOD just watching that LWT logo and tune whisked me back to the couch of 1980 in readiness for weekend viewing. Ace. How i miss that.

  • Optimus57 you are spot on, it does have that big time feel! You knew it was the weekend when this was played. Reminds me of Dempsey & Makepeace. I know a lot of viewers couldn't give two hoots if this was played or not, but it gave each programme it's own identity. I miss those days!

  • The king of ITV idents!

  • I remember hearing this just before "Me and my girl"

  • It's Friday night and the weekend is about to begin!

  • Play your cards wrong is on, Only joking, Play your cards right is on, this ident remind me of the game show that game on at weekends with Brucie. Fanstatic...

  • @TheScotty9646 That's exactly what I was thinking! For some reason, the LWT fanfare just segues right into the Play Your Cards Right theme in my mind. Thank god - I thought I was the only one! :)

  • LWT classic ident if only itv would show this ident when they show old tv shows like on the buses

  • @cliveo1973

-except they should use the pre-1978 ident (the one that didn't have the 'river' 3-colour-line separate down into the 3 LWT letters).

  • Used to love this - 2 days off school!

  • That animation is so like Terry Gilliam's rhythmic style.

  • It's Friday night, it's circa 1983 and I'm watching Play Your Cards Right!!!!

  • or me and my girl with joanna ridley

  • Yeah - I remember this programme well - although I didnt remember it being preceded by this particular ident.

Why don't they make sitcoms like they used to?!!

  • i seem to mind, The Benny Hill took the piss out of this particular ident. Can't mind what he changed it to on his show though.

  • I don't think it was Benny Hill, but it was a show that was on that station during the mid 70s that did. I forgot the name of the show.

  • @donjabroni The show was End Of Part One

  • @donjabroni was it kenney everett you are thinking of, or whas that the thames ident?

  • Actually it was from End of Part One as someone mentioned.

  • Was it WLT - Women's Libbers Television? I remember that from some show back in the day.

  • the benny hill show done the spoof

  • I know that Beeny Hill took the piss out of the Anglia TV ident once. He also made a reference to Central TV being called Bentral TV when he was mocking Roger Cook.

  • Being a Londoner, I really really miss thie ident!

  • omg i reemember this one

  • LOOKS LIKE TOOTHPASTE

  • i use to draw the lwt logo with toothpaste

  • @phillipchav you used signal toothpaste didnt you?

  • @bigcherry99 aquafresh i think

  • @phillipchav oh yes, it was aquafresh wasn't it. i remember jingle from the ad, it went 'three in one protection for your family'

  • @phillipchav excellent and original!

  • Where do I buy LWT paint?

  • From London? On the weekend?

  • ah quality and memories.

  • On The Buses was also made by this company

  • but not with this particular ident - LWT changed it in 1978 - the old one had the same music but didn't split into 3 letters

  • Start of the weekend! staying at my grans lovely tones of bliss!!

  • Old idents are fun. Unlike the really dull ones now. These are just bold and primary.

  • Didn't Londoners regard LWT as Last Weeks Television? I loved comedy A Fine Romance with Judi Dench and Michael Williams.

  • The Gentle Touch is about to start! lol

  • Weekend Worlds about to start!

  • No, "Upstairs, Downstairs"!

  • Gosh, even i remember this as a little boy. I remember that appearing before the opening intro to bruce forsythes play your cards right, more than anything else

  • It also appeared before Punchlines,Metal Mickey & Surprise Surprise.

  • Dee 106.3 (local radio) plays this music sometimes.

  • Ahhh pure class. I miss LWT.

  • do you have to swear!

  • of course i dont have to... but i fuckin like to!

  • The king of idents.

  • some of the american idents nb, cbs etc are great too, not that im american or anything

  • we used to live in watford and got anglia and lwt/thames. lwt were the best idents well apart from ATV cos i was born in leicester in the 70's

  • This and the 80s thames idents are truelly magical. Seeing as they have swallowed up lwt, itv should bring this back and use the font and theme for a new itv ident. They could put it on before their big event shows like x factor and im a celebrity as it has a "big time" feel about it. They should also bring back in vision continuity for day times and late nights. Oh and make some better programmes and stop ripping viewers off.

  • i totally agree!

  • @optimus57 Why? I know it's unfortunate, but 99% of the audience couldn't give a toss about the people or company who made the programme, even less so about the logo of the production company.

It's unfortunate, but I'm more down to Earth, and can say that they're not going to do anything like that jin the near future.

  • @AidanLunn I know. You are probably right and times have moved on. But branding is important. And viewers like familiarity and nostalgia. If ITV can do something that makes their viewers affectionate and loyal to their brand then they should.

  • @AidanLunn

You're probably right, but this is a cracking bit of nostalgia. When you used to

see a regional ident before a programme, it was as if they were saying: 'this is our product, and we're proud of it.' It made you want to watch. The corporate, slightly cold ITV ident of today just doesn't give that feel. I would more inclined to watch their programming if I got the impression they believed in their product. Just a personal observation.

  • @LadyMezzo Well, the ident didn't make me want to watch. The programme did.

  • Query didnt LWT make The Professionals because when I watch it on ITV4 a Granada logo comes up after the end credits

  • I think they did, but Granada International then got the rights. Granada is now ITV1, as are all the former companies, swallowed up in a huge conglomerate.

  • Not exactly- theres still stv, utv and citv

  • I think you mean CTV.

  • Channel Islands TV, that spells CITV

  • Whilst I understand your logic, the station is actually called Channel Television (CTV). Check out their idents. CITV stands for Children's ITV.

  • STV, The central scottish television corporation that wiped out a northern scottish regional t.v station, Grampian, And shows trashy cheap alternatives nowadays.

  • Yeah they did - although Granada apparently "made" Professionals - when they clearly didn't as they didn't own LWT *at the time* so it's still an LWT production!

  • 1978-1982.

  • 1978-1986 or 87!

  • Its either time for Game for a Laugh, or Mind Your Language

  • I loved LWT what a great station, great telly and great idents. This is in my opinion the pick of the bunch. Continuity was much better back then, the announcers had an authority about them and most of the time when this ident started you knew you were about to watch a bit of quality telly... where as now its "you're watching itv1, now we give you more crap to watch !" We loved you LWT, thanks for the memories x

  • The best ever LWT logo. If that is the right word? And now on LWT, Bottle Boys with Robin Askwith.

  • Dempsey and Makepeace, Metal Micky, Chips

This logo reminds me of the best era of CLEAN innocent tv.

  • I entirely agree with you eclectica 1.

    Thanks JokerCapt!

    Frédéric, FRANCE.

  • Best regional ITV indent ever in my opinion...

  • To use some rather ghastly youthful vernacular - "Now that's what I'M talking about!"

  • This is madness, but I like it. The old ITV idents gave each station a homely glow. By the way, I used to watch 'Within These Walls' but never fancied Googie Withers.

  • And what can you remember hearing after that?

For me, it's the intro to The Gentle Touch!

  • For me it has to be Play Your Cards Right, Game for a Laugh or Punchlines.

  • Well this brings back memories.

I got a Goodies dvd which shows this before the start of each episode!

  • come on, britain was much more of shithole then

    i was there, i remember !!

  • Seems worse now

  • Thats the one! used to see that then The Fall Guy theme started :)

  • wonderful, just wonderful. the lovely world of ITV idents. how they are missed. cheers

    atv midlands

  • the best tv ident per se!

  • classy!

  • nice ... reminds me lots of things .. thank you :)
