...I'm pretty sure, after some research, that a lot of the doom/sludge/stoner/drone metal requires either some mary jane/form of altered state, or very particular ears. I can appreciate most of the aforementioned genres, but drone metal still escapes me as-of-yet.

@Cinebite It requires an appreciation of the gigantic, fantastical aesthetic they are aiming for with the bass. Everything is slow and huge with this music. The gritty vocals are the musings of a dark wizard, it requires some imagination to get into the Sunn O))) world.

When you listen to this kind of music, it's not about the melody or the rhythm, but it's all about the sound. Some people might object this isn't music then — fine for me : let's call this auditive art. Because in the end it's all about the TEXTURE of the sound. The thick, sludgy texture of full force distorted Sunn amps.

In addition, I would recommend getting the album Amplifier Worship, by Boris, as well as the albums Earth 2 and Phase 3 by Earth. You might also like the album Pilgramage, by Om, but that's more on the doom-stoner side of drone, as opposed to the dark themes that Sunn O))) employs.
